RCC COURSE RENOVATION Save the date for Friday, November 6 when we celebrate Raleigh Country Club’s reopening post-renovation of the golf course. “I think everyone is going to be pleased with the work architect Kyle Franz has produced,” said McConnell Golf’s VP of Golf Operations Brian Kittler. For McConnell Golf, the focus of the project was to produce an improved course for all levels of players — retaining the integrity of the course that Ross first designed and built, but allowing more challenges for today’s long-hitting players. “With over 350 trees gone, it gives the holes much better views and pin locations. It’s definitely going to be a more challenging course to play,” said Kittler. Raleigh Country Club, which first opened in 1948 just east of downtown Raleigh, is the final design of legendary architect Donald Ross. Golf course architect Kyle Franz oversaw the RCC restoration, which began in February. The McConnell Golf portfolio now includes three other classic Ross designs — Sedgefield Country Club, Country Club of Asheville and Holston Hills Country Club. McConnell Golf is the only individual golf course proprietor in the world that owns four Ross-designed courses.

RCC buzz Look who’s talking about our club! Please enjoy a few of our favorite mentions below – and keep sharing your experiences with us by tagging Raleigh Country Club on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a chance to be featured in the next newsletter.
Raleigh Country Club Good food, views and brews for tonight's Hops 'N Harvest dinner on the Fairway Grill Deck.
ford_thelab Hit like if you think @raleighcountryclub should let the dogs take over the pool every day
Raleigh Country Club The off-and-on rain did not stop our Op36 junior golfers from competing and trying to beat 36 on 9-holes! Congratulations to all who advanced to the next level in wet conditions! Also great to see everyone improve week to week! Will Suddreth went off early this morning and advanced to the 150 yard division. Charles Gauley, George Cram, Sawyer Ruerup, and Corbett Gupton all shot 36 or better from 50 yards to advance to 100 yards. Finally, Tyler James, Will McLaughlin, and Jay Preston all advanced past 25 yards! Great job from everyone, and looking forward to seeing how well everyone does in two weeks!
Raleigh Country Club One of the less-talked about benefits of selective tree removal: evening shadows. Light filtering through the trees create contrasts that make it difficult for your author to put down the camera!

TEE IT UP
Like all things new and different for 2020, so was the change to our Fall Junior Golf Academy Program. Coming up with something novel started this summer, as we noticed parents’ desire for more golf activities as other sports began to drop-off with COVID restrictions. The major question asked by parents after a lesson was, “what are the plans for the fall?” At that point, we knew there was a need to have to have something new and exciting for our junior golfers. A majority of other McConnell properties already adopted a program called Operation 36, which was successful throughout the company. RCC knew how awesome the program was and with our golf course being closed, we saw an opportunity to start it here at RCC. Operation 36 is the fastest growing golfer development model with technology being integrated in coaching programs around the world. The program gives our staff a way to organize a golfer’s development and measure improvement over time with the end goal to get all of our golfers to shoot (par) 36 from a full tee-box! Operation 36 flips the traditional method of teaching golf from tee to green, to starting golfers at the green and progresses golfers back to a full tee as their skills develop. For our juniors, it allows us to track their golf development over time, and gives parents a timely and motivating way to get their junior on the golf course. Our professional staff has access to a junior development model that can help us project where a junior’s handicap will be at the time they graduate high school. Parents can quickly switch between juniors in the mobile app to see their goals and log when they play and train. Each session is shared with coaches to help guide and report their golf development each year. This is how the on-course model works: instead of starting at the full normal tee box, all golfers begin in Division 1 and will play 9 holes starting 25 yards from each green. If they shoot par (36) or better, the golfer progresses to Division 2, where they start 50 yards from each green. This challenge continues until the golfer can shoot par (36) from all 10 divisions!

When the initial email was sent out to the membership on a Sunday afternoon in August, we realized the excitement of our new junior golf academy. While originally only having spots for 24 junior golfers, which seemed ambitious due to previous year’s attendance, to everyone’s surprise there were 24 juniors signed up within two hours and more coming. Due to the amount of excitement shown towards the program, RCC added more classes. So what started as four classes on Wednesday ultimately doubled to another four on Tuesday. After 48 juniors signed for our Fall Academy, we were completely full with quite a long list of juniors on the waitlist that were ready to participate — there's no doubt our junior program is alive and well! With RCC and McConnell Golf's rich history of junior and amateur golf, this program along with our professional staff will continue to improve our teaching methods to maintain and grow our excellence in junior golf. In just a short period of time, our juniors are already 152 shots better than when they started on their first day in September. There are multiple juniors on the college track already should they continue to train, play and improve. All of these things show how training hard on the correct skills is better than practicing without goals or a plan. Regardless of the stats, the most important aspect of Operation 36 is that juniors are excited to get out to the course more than ever and they are having fun playing golf. As for what the future holds, multiple semesters will be available throughout 2021. Don’t be surprised when your junior golfer reminds you to fix ball marks and are shooting lower scores.
HOLE IN ONE! On Wednesday October 21st, Mr. Jeff Orlando aced the 13th Hole at Treyburn Country Club. From 115 yards, a well struck gap wedge found the bottom of the cup and was witnessed by Mr. Andrew Chadwick, Mr. Eric Cox, and Mr. Ed Boiar. Congratulations to Mr. Orlando!
