HOLE IN ONE With the countdown clock now ticking to the re-opening of our outstanding newly renovated golf course, I would personally like to thank every one of our Members who have visited, stayed, and played at our sister McConnell Golf properties since February 3rd. Please keep up the great work of social distancing, adhering to the daily cart policies, and the diligence and attention to caring for the course you have shown. Remember, repairing your ball mark as well as others is great practice for the utmost care our Raleigh Country Club greens are going to need going forward. With the release of our RCC Online Pro Shop for our Members, please check for continued updates to our inventory. Members can not only purchase RCC logoed apparel, but also logoed apparel from any of our McConnell Golf Properties. Selections include not only RCC Golf Shop inventoried items found under the “From the Club” tab, but also selections of additional Men’s, Ladies, Boys, Girls, Headwear, Homegoods, and Golf accessory options. Please visit the site located on the Raleigh Country Club homepage to view our Online Pro Shop! The year 2020 will be remembered for several different reasons, but one that has surely surpassed all of the Vegas odds are the number of Hole-InOnes our Raleigh Country Club Members have recorded. To those who have accomplished this feat: Mr. Jack Blankenhorn, Ms. Becca McKinney, Mr. Ted Broering, Mr. Callum Chadwick, Mr. Paul Urben, Mr. Scott Ruerup, Mr. Greg Seamster, Mr. Matt Lindley, and Mr. David Acomb – Congratulations again!

Landon Harper

Jack Paynter

An early Friday morning round on July 10th proved to be one to remember for RCC Member Mr. Landon Harper. On the 3rd hole at Wakefield Plantation, Mr. Harper laced a 5 iron from 206 yards straight at the flag. With no golf balls to be found on the green, the search party of Mr. Harper and playing partners Mr. Doug Bray and Mr. Gordon Grimes proceeded to look over the green until Mr. Harper’s trusty yellow Titleist was found resting in the bottom of the cup. Congratulations Mr. Harper on your first ever Hole-In-One! While the designer of The Cardinal by Pete Dye called the 12th hole “the hardest par three I ever designed”, Raleigh Country Club Junior Champion Mr. Avery Barnes didn’t think it was that hard on July 23rd. Playing in a Tarheel Youth Golf Association tournament, Mr. Barnes recorded his first ever hole-in-one using a 7-iron and created an instant family memory as his shot was witnessed by his grandfather and longtime RCC Member Mr. Jim Barnes III. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any one of your RCC Golf Professional Staff Members. Paul Dickens Raleigh Country Club Director of Golf

Now let’s add a few more to this distinguished list!!! On June 20th, RCC Member Mr. Matt Mitcho holed in one on the demanding #8 hole at Tobacco Road Golf Club. Into a ‘strong’ breeze from 167 yards, Mr. Mitcho’s 6-iron disappeared into the bottom of the cup and was witnessed by fellow RCC Members Mr. Brian Clemency and Mr. Chris Fleming. Playing at Treyburn Country Club on July 5th alongside RCC Members Mr. Joe Matteis and Mr. J.P. Baker, Mr. Jack Paynter aced the 7th hole using a well-struck 5-iron. The estimated distance was somewhere “just over 160 yards”, as according to Mr. Paynter…”I was the only one in the group that could see that far!”. Well played Mr. Paynter…well played….

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS

Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.

Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).

It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.

FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed!
