CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR
TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY
As a little girl, I recall hearing "time goes by faster the older you get" from my daddy pretty regularly. I would rebut every single time, letting him know that time passes at the same pace your entire life. Well here we are and time seems to be going by faster and faster. Believe it or not, February 1, 2021, marked Sedgefield Country Club's ten year anniversary with McConnell Golf! What an exciting ride this has been and I think we would all agree that it calls for a celebration! Please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 11, 2021, for a party that is not to be missed as we take a trip down memory lane and raise our glasses to McConnell Golf.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2021 | SAVE THE DATE
As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, we expect to enjoy a more normal summer and do not anticipate using a reservation system for poolside fun. The Sedgefield Fins will be back in action, including five Swim Meets, two of which will be hosted at Sedgefield. We do anticipate meets being restricted to 50% capacity on the pool deck; otherwise it should be a relatively normal swim season. If you have children ages 5 through 18, we're pretty sure they want to be a Sedgefield Fin! Check out the Aquatics Page of this publication for more information. We are excited that spectators and sponsors will be able to return to the Wyndham Championship. While the exact capacity is not certain at the moment, planning is underway as we await the arrival of the PGA TOUR in Greensboro. Mark your calendars for August 10 - 15. You may recall last year's Class of 2020 Virtual Yearbook recognizing our high school and college graduates. We are proud that this idea went on to become an award winner at the CMAA Idea Fair and also proud to make it a tradition at Sedgefield. Please watch your emails for a call to submit pertinent information to prepare the 2021 Yearbook. We will be asking for a photo of your graduate, high school or college from which they are graduating, the college that your high school graduate will be attending in the fall, and/or the degree that your college graduate earned. Thinking back on my daddy's perspective on time, as a child his comment seemed downright silly to me. As an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for his words of wisdom and find myself relishing life's memories and seeking more opportunities to create new ones with family and friends. I hope you are doing the same and that many of those moments are centered around your time at Sedgefield.
VIRTUAL YEARBOOK WINS AT CMAA IDEA FAIR The Club Management Association of America (CMAA) conducts an Idea Fair each year for the purpose of sharing ideas with managers across the country through a visual medium. Entries from 18 categories are judged on creativity, clarity, content, and transferability of the idea. Winners are announced at CMAA World Conference. The Sedgefield team won First Place in the category of Club Communications for the Class of 2020 Virtual Yearbook we published last year to recognize our high school and college graduates.

A year ago the Green Zebras had never played a match together and now they are playing in official Gate City Women's League matches. "We have a dedicated group of 9 enthusiastic and determined ladies who rarely miss practice. In fact, most weeks you will find The Green Zebras on the courts for extra group practice sessions or lessons with Coach Pierce! The entire team has been super supportive of each other from the very beginning. You can feel a competitive spirit among the group and sense an abundance of Green Zebra pride to be sure. When asked, every teammate agrees - The Green Zebras have fun on the court whether we win or lose!"

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST SEDGEFIELD MEMBERS
WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST CARDINAL MEMBERS
Sheree Marsh Crane Joining the trend of many former members that have returned to membership, please welcome Sheree Crane back to the membership at Sedgefield. As a former member and relative to many current members, she is no stranger to the club and is glad to be back! Sheree was sponsored into membership by her sister, current member Amber Elliott, while her father Leon Marsh and daughter Lily Crane are members as well – to say Sedgefield is a family affair would be an understatement! In her free time, Sheree is an avid reader and enjoys yoga and traveling. She is eager to play golf again after only playing once or twice a year for the last decade and has always enjoyed the beauty and challenge of the Sedgefield course and the friendliness of the golfing community. Please join us in welcoming Sheree back to Sedgefield!

The Yates family is looking forward to enjoying all of the amenities the club has to offer and the friendship of many other members.
MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES Outstanding golf courses and amenities are all wonderful privileges of membership. That being said, the real value of membership exists in the friendships that are built along the way. Oftentimes those friendships begin as early as childhood when children of members make new friends at the club. Pictured below (right) are Bryce Hamilton, Jay Stiefel, and Jack Boyer enjoying a round of golf recently at Sedgefield. They are also pictured left as young boys at Sedgefield. Through Junior golf, these young men have literally grown up together at the club with a lifelong friendship in the making.

MEMBERSHIP A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR The past year has been a roller coaster for almost everyone. With economic uncertainty, healthcare concerns, lockdowns and masks, no one really knew what the future held. When communicating with prospective club members, I have been using different terms that I never thought I would have to use in my nineteen years of doing this, such as “we are pleased to be as open and operational as we can be,” for example. As we are seemingly on our way back to a somewhat normal state, the “state of the membership” at Sedgefield has never been better. Who could have predicted that nationwide lockdowns would mean a resurgence for golf across the country, as we were all simply looking for something to do! Since McConnell Golf acquired Sedgefield, the initiation fee for Full Golf membership has remained the same. With the recent surge of membership along with an evaluation of the local market conditions, the decision has been made to put a two-part initiation fee market adjustment in place. Effective June 1, 2021, the Full Golf initiation fee will increase to $12,500 for those applicants paying in full at the time of joining, and $15,000 for those financing. We feel this is a testament to the growth of the club and continues to represent a great value for all that membership within Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf represents. Along with new joining fees, we have implemented changes to our Junior Full Golf & Young Executive Golf offerings as well. While applicants under the ages of 40 and 32 will still enjoy reduced dues and initiation fee payments, we are now beginning to collect a small amount of the initiation fee each year, culminating at age 40, versus the former model which deferred the balance until age 40. With this, our members that represent the future of the club will be paid in full and fully vested by the age of 40 and not have the concerns of a lump sum initiation fee payment. Should you know of anyone that is interested in golf membership within Sedgefield, now is the time to act! All golf membership applicants after May 31, 2021, will be subject to new initiation fees, therefore any of your friends, neighbors or colleagues that have ever contemplated membership should seriously consider the opportunity now.
To have membership information sent to anyone on your behalf, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I will be happy to reach out to them to discuss the Sedgefield lifestyle and how they can become a part of the growing Sedgefield family. As always, thank you for your support of the club! SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT
The golf season is finally upon us and the majority of our turf appears to have survived this past winter’s weather with very minimal damage and we all should be looking forward to a season of warm weather and great turf conditions. There are small areas in our collars that did not survive and are typical trouble spots due to their locations with high foot traffic, mower traffic, roller traffic, shade issues, etc. We will be addressing these areas and sodding them while we are closed for aerification May 4-10.
Spring is here and the course is greening up very nicely. It is looking like we have come out of winter with very little damage. I think we will have a few small collar areas that will need to be sodded, but that is a very common problem when you have cool-season greens like our bent grass greens and warm-season collars like our Bermuda grass. The reason that collars always seem to struggle in the spring is that they go into winter very weak. There are some things that we spray on greens to keep them healthy and rolling well in the summer that make the collars grow very slowly, and weakens them before they go dormant in the fall. We will be trying a couple of new things on greens and collars this year to hopefully help them go dormant much healthier in the fall.
Like I mentioned before we will be aerifying the greens, tees, and fairways May 4-10. Considering that the turf made it through the winter well and is healthy, this will allow it to heal from this process in a timely manner and be back to great golfing conditions in just a few short weeks. Please keep in mind that warmer weather means that we will also begin our normal agronomic practices of verti-grooming the greens and lightly sanding them with ultra-fine sand every Monday during our growing season. This process is very minimal in disruption but is a vital part to us being able to provide you with the best possible greens surfaces week in and week out during the season. We are in the process of renovating our nursery area to the right of hole 7 green and the other one behind hole 10 green. The one to the right of 7 green is being converted into a nursery for our collars instead of being used for the greens. That area gets covered in silt during floods and does not make for a good growing environment for the turf we have on our greens. The nursery behind 10 is going to be made slightly smaller to accommodate for the Wyndham structures and it has become so contaminated with several different types of bermudagrasses that it needed to be killed off and replanted. Come on out and enjoy the perfect golfing weather before the summer heat sets in. Hope to see you around the course.
The agronomy team is starting to shift our focus from winter project work to daily maintenance and mowing now that the grass is green and growing. Some things that we will still be working on is regrading and sodding some of the bare spots at the hold water on 14 and 15 fairways, as we have already made some repairs to 15 fairway. A large catch basin and drainage system were installed to help move water off the surface and provide better playing conditions. We will also continue to work on cleaning up the creek. The crew has been hard at work getting in the creek and cutting back all saplings and they have it looking great! I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of the improvements made to the course this winter. I am looking forward to a fun spring and summer of golf and hope to see you all on the course this summer. Also, as a reminder, the course will be closed June 1-4 for Greens, Tees, and Fairway aerification. Ross Jernigan

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL The 2021 Golf Season is FINALLY here! We are FINALLY starting to see warmer temperatures and are already seeing tons of green grass! This change in the weather signals the start of the golf season and we wanted to provide everybody with a few friendly reminders about our standard at Sedgefield and throughout McConnell Golf. Pace of Play One of our standards is that all rounds of golf are played in less than 4 hours. We realize that on occasion, a group may fall behind due to a lost ball or some other inconvenience. It is essential that the lagging group get back in position as quickly as possible. By that, we mean, catch up to the group in front within one to two holes. As we are going around the course checking on you, we will follow the below protocol: Initial interaction – one of the golf professionals will explain you are out of position and ask you to regain your position in 1-2 holes. We will be back to check on you within the window we gave you or we will stay with you to help you regain your position. Second interaction - If you have not improved by the second time we approach your group, you will be required to either step aside and let faster players play through or skip ahead to regain your position on the golf course. Please understand, we do not want to approach you about your pace of play, but a lagging pace takes away from the member experience for others and we must correct it.
Below are some additional ways to help you with pace of play issues: 1. Let’s all take to heart the concept of “Ready Golf”. Instead of preparing to play your shot when it’s your turn to play – be prepared. Have your yardage read, your glove on, club to be played in hand and be in a position to strike the ball as long as it is safe and does not distract your fellow playing partners. It is incumbent upon all to ensure that the golfers behind you have an equally enjoyable day on the course. 2. Park the cart between the green and the next tee. If walking, place your bag in that position. 3. If an errant shot is played in the group – play your next shot before assisting in the search. 4. Instead of marking a short putt and waiting to putt out, go ahead and finish the hole – even if you might be standing in another’s line. With the new rules allowing us to repair spike marks, stepping in someone’s line should not be an issue. 5. If planning to snack or rehydrate in some fashion at the turn – call ahead and place the order from 8 tee. 6. When finishing the round on 18, place your putter in the bag and immediately head to the clubhouse to unload pockets and retrieve personal items from your bag. If you unload at the green, you are putting yourself in danger of getting hit by an errant shot as well as holding up the group behind you. Dress Code We are fortunate to play at one of the Top 10 clubs in the Carolinas, so please dress accordingly. Remember, denim and clothing designed for exercise are NOT allowed on the golf course or any of the practice facilities at any time. We bring this to your attention because we often see members on the range or on the putting green dressed like they are going to the fitness center. The staff does not want to embarrass anybody by having to approach them and asking them to leave, so please keep our dress code in mind when coming to the club to practice or play.
SEDGEFIELD TIMES
Music on the Course Like it or not, music being played on the course has become a popular part of golf’s culture. The only thing we ask is to keep the volume down low enough so it does NOT disturb the groups around you.
In closing, we would like to reiterate to everyone how much we want you to enjoy every visit to the club. However, it is just as important to keep the experience of your fellow members in mind as well. We look forward to a great year and please do not hesitate to let us know if we can ever help you. See you on the course, Rocky Brooks

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL 2021 Golf Season is underway! And WOW what a start to the year! We’ve had some incredible action already and the season just started. Let's take a quick look back at some of the excitement. At the beginning of April, we began our 2021 season with the Cardinal Season Opener. After a long winter, we were hoping for some warm weather. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn't have the same plan. Even with the colder temperatures, we had 83 players battling for the title. Thank you to everyone that came out to play and supported the tournament. Congratulations to all of our Champions. The winners of our Gross Division were Vince Credle, Ty Palmer, Mike Palmer, and Scotty Trogdon and the winners of our Net Division were Steve Hooks, Nadine Hooks, David Lovell, and Debbie Lovell. When the calendar switches over to April, everyone sets their eye on warmer weather and The Master's Tournament. We all know how that event signals the beginning of spring here in the south, but another event is right on its heels, The Cardinal’s annual Masters Par 3 Tournament. Nothing sets the season off right more than a little pimento cheese, egg salad, and par 3s. We had a wonderful field this year again for the event. Twenty-seven two-person teams competed in a 9-hole best ball event to decide who would be the best Par 3 Team. At the end of the night, 2 teams had tied for both the Net and Gross Divisions. After a lengthy tiebreaker, we’d like to congratulate our champions. For the Gross Division, the winners were Blaine Biggs and Keith Kepler and the Net Division winners were Don Troutman and Brooks Barwick.

By now, many of you have already seen or heard about the multiple projects that were accomplished this winter by our Superintendent Ross Jernigan and his team. However, I thought this was a good time to recap a few and give this hard working team a shout-out for all their hard work. First I will start with all of the deadwood he was able to remove. His team created mulch beds around trees between holes 7 and 14 and on holes 10 and 16. Two drainage projects were also completed; the first project was on 15 and the second on 6. Installing the drains will help move the water away from the fairway. As I write this, members of Ross’ team are walking up and down the creek clearing out debris and saplings to create a much smoother flow of water in the creek during heavy rains. Ross and his team deserve a ton of credit and applause for the hard work they all put in to maintain our facility and put it back together when Mother Nature unleashes its fury on our “Masterpiece”. Thank you Ross and team!

Lather on the sunscreen and bug spray, and stay hydrated Long periods of sun exposure can lead to painful sunburns. In addition to the immediate pain, you are also increasing your risk of skin cancer. Use sunscreen, and wear clothing and hats that minimize your skin’s sun exposure. Keep your family safe from bug bites by reapplying bug spray in accordance with the spray’s directions. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, and help your body regulate its temperature by taking breaks and seeking the comfort of shade or air conditioning. Know the signs of heat-related illnesses, which can range from muscle cramps and fatigue to heat stroke, a serious condition marked by hot, dry or moist skin, a rapid pulse and/or confusion. Make sure to get medical help if your symptoms worsen. Never leave children or pets locked in a hot car. Stay up to date on severe weather Summer weather can sometimes be unpredictable. Floods, tornadoes and lightning are all threats that come with summer thunderstorms. Plan ahead. Have a weather radio, follow media reports or use an app on your phone to track the anticipated weather for that day. If severe weather is forecast, consider changing your plans. Be sure to seek shelter immediately in the event of lightning or a tornado warning. If you venture out, keep a close watch on the weather.
Summer is a beautiful time. With some planning, you and your family can enjoy the season and the summer holidays without injury.

COOKIES OF THE MONTH MAY: CLEAR-THE-CUPBOARD COCONUT OATMEAL PECAN COOKIES By Rhett Sorg - The Reserve Golf Club at Pawley's Island
When I was young, I first had these cookies at a friend's house; her mother had made them for her for years. My friend was not really interested in them at all, having eaten "thousands" of them. Kind of like a Lays Chip, you "can't eat just one." So I ate all that were there. As time went on I met her mother and we talked about the cookies and how I'm not a very good baker. We went to the kitchen and "cleared the cupboard" and made the cookies. I have been a big fan ever since and make them occasionally for my kids when they come home. Haven't had any left over's yet!!! Yield: Approximately 4 Dozen Cookies Ingredients: 1 Cup Shortening 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar, firmly packed 2 Large Eggs 2 Cups AP Flour 1 Cup Uncooked Oats 1 TSP Baking Soda
1 TSP Baking Powder 1 TSP Salt 1 Cup Flaked Coconut 1 Cup Crisp Rice Cereal 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 1 Cup Pecans, chopped
Directions: Beat shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy, add sugars, beat well. Add eggs, beat until blended. Combine flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add sugar to the mixture, beating until blended. Stir in coconut, cereal, vanilla, and pecans. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake in batches at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove to wire cooling rack.

JUNE: PEANUT BUTTER-CHOCOLATE NO BAKE COOKIES By Beverly Marler - Sedgefield Country Club
One of my personal favorite combinations is always chocolate and peanut butter. My mom used to make these for us when we were younger except she would joke around and call them cow patties. She liked to make these during the summer months to avoid the heat of cutting on the oven. I remember anxiously waiting for dinner to be over so we could have a no bake cookie and robbing the fridge when there were extras. Ingredients: 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter 1 3/4 Cups Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 1/2 Cup Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 2/3 Cup Creamy Peanut Butter 3 Cups Quick Oats Dash of Salt Directions: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a 2.5 to 3 quart saucepan combine butter, sugar, cocoa, and milk. Set over medium heat and cook stirring frequently until it reaches a full boil (should be a rolling boil). Allow mixture to boil for 60 seconds without stirring. Remove from heat, immediately add in vanilla, peanut butter, and quick oats. Stir mixture until well combined, then, using a medium (2 TBSP) cookie scoop or two spoons drop mixture onto lined baking sheets. Refrigerate until set. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
