CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR A SENSE OF COMMUNITY When I think of community, many groups come to mind. My professional association, CMAA, focuses heavily on our community. Fundraisers each year fulfill scholarships for continuing education. When disasters such as hurricanes and other weather-related events wreak havoc on our clubs, we are always there for each other. Another example of community for me happened in January when managers from every McConnell Golf property gathered at Sedgefield for four days of meetings, education and camaraderie. There was an enormous sense of community amongst the group as we sought out ways to become better and grow as a company. Both of these groups mean the world to me, but the members of Sedgefield Country Club have demonstrated the most heartwarming sense of community that I have witnessed in quite some time. Over the last 90 days, our membership has helped raise over $80,000 to help people in our community. Angel Tree Helpers collected $40K at Christmas and bought gifts for 173 children on the Salvation Army Angel Tree. And on February 20, when many were concerned about the snow keeping people away, instead they showed up in droves to support the David Dyson Fundraiser where another $40K was raised. Both of these charges were led by Sedgefield members who are so very giving of their time and energy. I can’t think of a better display of COMMUNITY and I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful group of people. BEVERLY MARLER _______________________________________________________

JANUARY EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH Join us in congratulating Gene Westbrook, Sedgefield Employee of the Month for January. Gene works in Golf Course Maintenance as the Head Mechanic and has been a valued member of the team for ten years. Gene’s even temperament and willingness to help others are two of many great attributes topped only by his love for family. He is a tremendous gentleman who always puts his family first. Congratulations Gene! We appreciate your dedication to Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf.

MCCONNELL GOLF COMPANY MEETING Sedgefield Country Club hosted yet another successful annual meeting for McConnell Golf! “Building Clubs of the Future” requires constant innovation and development. Every day there is an opportunity to make a difference and we’re excited about what 2020 has to offer! “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” -Rabindranath Tagore

MEMBERSHIP

A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR The first (and hopefully last!) snowfall of the year is quickly melting away as I write this message. While the cold, white stuff can be fun in small doses, I don’t care for it. Snow interrupts normal schedules and sends kids home from school early and more importantly it keeps us off of the golf course. So here’s to no more snow and milder temperatures that will hopefully arrive soon! Speaking of spring, I am excited to announce the return of our MEMBER FOR A DAY program – your opportunity to introduce a friend, neighbor or colleague that you feel would be a good fit as a member at Sedgefield to the club. There are a few “housekeeping” items to review as we roll this popular program out again for 2020.

RON AND CHARLOTTE CONNER

Any guests that you bring to the club for our MEMBER FOR A DAY program must be pre-registered with the membership office. When pre-registering your guest, the club will cover their guest fee and cart fee for golf for the day. For a guest to qualify, they must be a legitimate prospective member and you must provide their name and contact information to me at least 48 hours prior to their visit. This program is not only for golf – if you would like to bring a potential member with you for tennis or perhaps a workout in our fitness center, we would love to have them! Just let me know at least 48 hours in advance and we will be happy to register them and cover their guest fees. Any charges your guests make in the pro shops, dining rooms, etc., can either be member charged to your account or they may pay with their own credit card at the point of sale. While we generally have a start and end date to this program, with the unpredictable weather we can experience this time of year, we are going to leave it somewhat open-ended. While we much prefer to show off our wonderful facility in mid-to-late spring as the dormant grass begins to come back to life and the flowers around the club begin to bloom, that does not mean you have to wait to bring a prospective member with you. If we have great weather in mid-to-late March and you have a prospective member that would like to join you at the club, please let me know and we can make it happen! Further, we generally wind the program down by mid-tolate May, as summer break will finally be here! In order to protect our tee sheet and tee time availability for all members, we are unable to assist in booking tee times for you through the program. Please continue to book your times as usual, simply adding your guests to your reservation. Thank you in advance for your participation and cooperation with our efforts to continue to grow the membership at Sedgefield from within. As our club enjoys its 94th anniversary this year, it is more important than ever to continue to build a steady base of members to solidify the success of the club for decades to come! I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club this spring! CHAD FLOWERS

JOE AND CATHERINE HOLLERBACH

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS RON AND CHARLOTTE CONNER - Ron and Charlotte live in the Lake Jeanette area in Greensboro. Ron is originally from Burlington, NC while Charlotte is a Greensboro native. The couple met in 2014 shortly after Ron returned home from his service in the Marine Corps while Charlotte was completing her undergraduate degree at Greensboro College. Together they have two dogs (Bear and Bella) and a kitten (Veronica Mars). Ron enjoys clay shooting, fishing, golf and hiking with his wife and dogs. Charlotte loves playing piano, kayaking and anything to do with the beach. She grew up playing tennis and is looking forward to picking up the game again and wants to learn to play golf too. They heard about Sedgefield while looking to join a country club in the area and after the tour knew this was the place for them. Please join us in welcoming them to the Sedgefield Family! JOE AND CATHERINE HOLLERBACH – The Hollerbachs recently relocated to Greensboro from the Ft. Worth, Texas area, however, they are no strangers to Sedgefield and McConnell Golf. Members of the Country Club of Asheville for the past 30 years, finding a new club when moving to Greensboro was an easy decision. The couple originally heard of Sedgefield during coverage of the Wyndham on television and were able to spend more time at the club when Joe played in the US Hickory Open hosted here in 2018. Joe is retired from electrical manufacturing; Catherine is a retired teacher. They met in college at the University of Tennessee. The Hollerbachs are looking forward to great camaraderie at the club along with wine dinners and plenty of golf. Please join us in welcoming them!

CLUBHOUSE NEWS

6 A NOTE FROM YOUR SALES AND CATERING DIRECTOR

A NOTE FROM YOUR FOOD AND BEVERAGE DIRECTOR What a great feeling it is to see the Dining Room crowded and not an empty seat left in the Red Fox Bar! A warm sense of gratification comes over our team when we see each and every one of you taking advantage of the club. Thank you for supporting us and all of Sedgefield’s events. It tells us we must be doing something right! We are definitely on an “Up”-ward swing around here. Since the momentum is rolling, we’re going to keep right on going as we have a bevy of great upcoming events to keep you coming back. So whether it’s a St. Patrick’s Day Run, a Lowcountry Boil Party or one of our wine events, we look forward to seeing you all around the clubhouse! And remember… When nothing goes right... go left! See you around the clubhouse, MAYA PANAYOTOVA

A common grievance that comes up in topics of conversation in the club, catering and food and beverage industry is staffing. Everyone seems to struggle with finding the right employees and keeping those employees engaged in the operation. While we have staff that has come and gone for various reasons, I am proud to say that at Sedgefield, we have a team of employees that have been with us 5, 10 even 12+ years! Everyone knows the saying “There’s no I in Team.” So what does that really mean? It means it takes a group of talented individuals working together to reach a common goal - or at least that’s how I like to interpret this phrase. What I am getting at is...we have an amazing food and beverage team here at Sedgefield Country Club. I wish I could take all the credit each time I receive a compliment on a successful bridal shower, dinner club, birthday party or wedding; but it’s truly our service staff, bartenders and culinary team that deserve the credit. When working in the club industry it is sometimes thought that you see your “work family” more than your own. While that might be the case from time to time, I am proud to say that over my 10 years at Sedgefield, we have built an outstanding team of individuals whom I consider my family. So with all that being said, and as we move into the busy spring season, I would just like to give a shout out to all of the hard working, dedicated and energetic staff we have working here at Sedgefield. Thank you! There is no I in team and it is truly a pleasure to be a part of team Sedgefield. The next time you consider hosting a private event, business meeting, family gathering, or golf outing, I hope you will consider Sedgefield Country Club. Our team of extraordinary staff will do everything in their power to ensure you and your guests have a memorable experience each and every time you visit the club. Thank you for your support of the club and hope you will let our Food and Beverage team take your next event from ordinary to extraordinary! Till then, I look forward to seeing you around the club!

MARCH COOKIE OF THE MONTH: HEATH BAR COOKIES

APRIL COOKIE OF THE MONTH: CARROT CAKE COOKIES

Ron Gordils, Executive Chef l Old North State Club

The Easter Bunny’s Pick

Growing up my great grandmother would always hand out Heath Bars for the holidays. That and a five dollar bill for every birthday, Christmas and she would even hand out Easter cards! She has been gone for a few years now but anytime I have a Heath Bar I think of her. This cookie is a delicious balance of cookie dough and Heath Bar crunch. Enjoy!

3/4 Cup (1 1/2 sticks) Butter, softened 1 Cup Packed Brown Sugar 1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract 1 1/2 Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 Cup Packed Shredded Carrots

2 ½ Cups All-Purpose Flour 1 TSP Salt 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 Cup (2 sticks) Unsalted Butter 1 ½ Cups Chopped Heath Bar pieces (Eight 1.4 ounce bars)

¾ Cup Brown Sugar ¾ Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla ½ Cup Chopped Walnuts

In a medium bowl, vigorously whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine Heath Bar pieces and chopped walnuts. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together the butter, brown and white sugars, and vanilla. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Add the flour mixture a third at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in the Heath Bar walnut mixture. Chill cookie dough for at least 30 minutes (better an hour or longer). Preheat oven to 350°F. On cookie sheets lined with parchment paper or Silpat, spoon out the cookie dough in small 1-inch diameter balls (size of a large marble). Leave ample space because they do spread. Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes, until the edges are just starting to brown. Remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes.

1 TSP Ground Cinnamon 1/4 TSP Ground Nutmeg 1/2 TSP kosher Salt 1/2 Cup Raisins 2 Cups Old-Fashioned Oats 1 TSP Baking Soda 3/4 Cup Unsweetened Shredded Coconut

CREAM CHEESE GLAZE 1 Cup Powdered Sugar 4 TSP Milk 1 OZ. Cream Cheese at room temperature 1/4 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl of an electric mixer, beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time until incorporated, then add vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture until well-combined. Stir in carrots, coconut, raisins and oats and mix until just combined. Scoop 1-inch rounds of dough onto baking sheet. Bake until golden, 15-18 minutes. Let cool. Make glaze: Beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until combined. Drizzle glaze over each cookie and let harden before serving.

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Warmer weather is just around the corner and with that brings new life to plants and animals. We are already experiencing some plants blooming just with the warmer than normal temps we experienced January and February. For the month of January we averaged close to 15 degrees warmer than normal and as I write this half way through February we are over 10 degrees warmer than our average for this month. Hopefully this trend will continue and any winter damage we may possibly have will be very minimal. As the days continue to get longer, the sun angle gets higher and the temperatures continue to warm, things will begin to wake up from the winter nap otherwise called dormancy and begin to green up.

I am looking forward to another great golfing season here at The Cardinal by Pete Dye! The winter has been relatively kind with the cold but definitely showed its teeth with rain. It seemed as if we were in a pattern of dry weather for two to three days followed by rain that kept us on the cart path more than usual. The course was built on property that is located in a flood plain and we receive runoff from miles around us, most notably the airport. Not only does this keep us extremely wet for long periods of time but also takes longer to dry out. Your agronomy staff has worked tirelessly to repair the course after these rain events and take great pride in giving the membership the best course possible on any given day.

What can you expect during this transition period from winter dormancy to the spring greening up process? With the rough, we will be scalping off all the old leaf blades from last season to open up the canopy and allow the warmer air temperatures to reach the soil. This will create a lot of old grass clipping debris that we will be blowing into piles and picking up as we go. We will start this process just before the rough starts to green up. Next will be the fairway and tees. We will begin the process of scalping these areas down once we feel there is enough new growth to support this process. It will consist of mowing well below normal in multiple directions to reset the turf canopy and remove all old growth and start the season fresh. Last but most importantly is the greens. This process is more gradual and requires patience. Once we feel the cold weather is behind us and the turf really starts actively growing, we will begin mowing the greens at a safe height of cut. We will be watching how the plants respond and lowering the height gradually to eventually achieve a tight surface that provides a good ball roll. The key word in this process is PATIENCE. There will be a time in this process that the greens are not at our normal standards. This is to be expected. We can’t push the gas pedal full throttle just yet like we can during the warmer months of May through August. We will be doing all we can and what we feel comfortable doing during this transition period to provide the best possible surfaces at that time. This will include the introduction of light topdressings, verti-grooming, and often times double mowing.

Moving into the spring months is something we look forward to all winter. It is the time of year when we start gearing up for the upcoming growing season and get all the pieces in place for a great summer. We have had a busy few weeks on the course in late February through early March. If weather will allow we will be out on the course applying our spring pre-emergent herbicide for summer weeds. We will also be applying our spring fertilization to give the turf the fuel to break dormancy and green up when the temperatures start to rise. Getting both of these processes done is crucial for the success and the condition of the course throughout the summer months. Along with all of this, we will be watching areas on the course as they green up. The milder temperatures this winter will help with minimizing winter kill issues around the property but other areas that hold excess moisture can be in danger of “not waking up.” The relentless rains we have experienced can put this in play but I am hopeful that we will have another strong green-up this year and hit the ground running into the summer.

This past fall and winter has been very wet and allowed us to spot several more drainage issues that we have addressed and will improve playability in the future. Hopefully the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil was correct and we are on our way to an early spring and some great golfing weather! See you around the course. CHAD CROMER

We recently completed the first aerification of the greens for the season. This process is vital for the health and playability of our surfaces. It relieves compaction and built up organic material while providing new channels for the Bentgrass roots to grow. Granting more oxygen and water to the roots will allow the plant to become stronger, which makes it possible for us to achieve excellent putting conditions and survive the hot temperatures during summer. We fertilized the greens prior to aerification to stimulate growth and expedite the healing process. The following week we will do the same thing to get the greens back in shape as soon as possible. The next aerification is scheduled for June 1 – June 5 and will include greens, tees, and fairways. Thank you for your continued support of this great property. The staff and I are lucky to be able to work at such a special place day in and day out and for some of the best members in all of golf. The Cardinal by Pete Dye has a bright future and I am excited to be a small part of it. See you on the course! ADAM BREWER

TEE TIMES A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF IS IT TOO LATE? During a recent trip to Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, CA, I was told by their scientists that my swing speed had dropped to that of an average LPGA Tour Player! They also informed me that LPGA superstar Lexi Thompson would average hitting it 20-30 yards by me. It usually takes quite a bit to embarrass me, but that did. It also inspired me. I quickly thought, being 55 years old, fat and lazy, is no way to head towards retirement. My challenge, like many of you, is I don’t know where to start or how to workout. So now what? The first step is to make a commitment. My mentor told me once…”Make a commitment to get better or just keep putting band-aids on your swing and your body. It’s up to you, but I can tell you band-aids don’t last and you won’t get as much out of the game as you can.” Hearing his words as I write this, I have decided I refuse to go into old age without a fight. Let’s set some goals in regards to your health and improving your golf game. The second step is where our Fitness Staff, Sherri Tallant and Will Beasley, come in. We all need to have Sherri assess our strengths and weaknesses through the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) assessment protocols. With this information, Sherri or Will can layout a program that deals with muscle strengthening as well as flexibility. This “New Plan” will provide us with a much better understanding of our body and more importantly, it will provide us with a roadmap to become healthier and improve our swing speed. The final step is work on your swing mechanics. We are fortunate to have some very knowledgeable golf professionals on our staff that fully understand what it takes to improve. The focus needs to be on establishing good fundamentals from the start. A good setup is vital. Secondly, determine what is not moving fast enough or moving in the wrong direction that causes a loss in distance. One lesson isn’t the answer. The initial lesson will focus on the biggest issue in your swing or setup. The remaining lessons will get you to where you want to be. Eric, Josh, Craig, Chris, Logan and I are willing to help. In closing, I have a deal for you!! I have to lose 30 pounds and keep it off through the Wyndham Championship. Anybody that can accomplish this same task gets two free golf lessons a month for 6 months. That’s an $840 value!!! To enter the contest, you need to contact Sherri Tallant at fitness@sedgefieldcc.com to setup your TPI assessment and weigh-in (everything will be kept between you and Sherri). Weigh-in must be done by April 1. In closing, IT’S NOT TOO LATE!!!! I’m going to get better in 2020… how about you? ROCKY BROOKS

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD PROFESSIONAL AT THE CARDINAL By now, I’m sure you all are ready for warmer weather and the golf season to begin. I can tell you this is definitely the case for myself and the staff at The Cardinal. We have been working hard to get ready for the upcoming season. With that being said, I wanted to let you know of a couple new features that will be coming from the golf operations at The Cardinal in 2020. Most of you are aware of our tournament software, GolfGenius. This is the software that allows us to utilize live scoring during golf tournaments. We plan to use this much more this year as new features have come to the software. One of these will be the use of a Member Portal. These portals will allow you, the member, to sign up for events, view the rules sheet, pairings and starting holes, along with the leaderboard for the event. Portals will become a one -stop shop for everything tournament related. Another new feature through Golf Genius will be the use of text messages. We will use this feature to make you aware of your starting time and pairing for events such as the Club Championship. These two functions will be valuable tools for us to help notify you of tournament information. I hope over the past month or two you have had the chance to download the McConnell Golf app from your respective mobile app stores. The app is a great addition to the PC version of the website. Making starting times and viewing the membership directory are much easier to navigate and use. You can also view the club’s calendar to stay aware of upcoming events at the club. One tool within the app that the staff will utilize will be Push Notifications. These will be the same as the notifications you get from your favorite sports website or for breaking news from our local news channels. We will use the Push Notification to make you aware of happenings around The Cardinal, such as upcoming tournaments, men’s league reminders, and special sales in the Golf Shop. If you haven’t downloaded the app yet, please do so. There is lots of good information that will definitely make life easier when you’re curious about what’s going on around the club. CHRIS TERRY

FITNESS

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER WORKOUT SHOES Whether your workout involves running, walking, sports or gym equipment, a decent sport shoe is a must. Injury caused by inappropriate shoes can needlessly derail your fitness or weight loss efforts. Investing in quality shoes can help prevent foot and ankle damage and make your workout a more pleasant and comfortable experience. TYPES OF SHOES A variety of sport shoes are on the market for every type of exercise. Running shoes that have built in shock absorbers are available for joggers and lightweight walking shoes are available for walkers. Aerobic shoes are lightweight and shock absorbing to prevent foot fatigue and to cushion the ball of the foot, which is put under pressure from aerobic exercise. Tennis shoes have flexible soles to protect your feet from the quick side-to-side movements of tennis. Cross-training shoes are also available. These are suitable if you perform a number of sport or exercise types in your workout. BENEFITS OF A PROPER SHOE Choosing a proper shoe can help to protect you against common injuries associated with your type of workout. Good shoes can lessen the impact of your step and cushion the foot from heavy landings. In addition, sport or exercise specific shoes can improve your performance, enabling, for example, quick direction changes. REPLACING YOUR SHOES Worn out sport shoes do not provide your feet with adequate protection during your workout. According to American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, running shoes should be replaced after every 350 to 500 miles. If you run 20 miles a week, this means you should replace your shoes every 20 to 25 weeks. NETWELLNESS advises against judging the wear of your shoes from the treads on the bottom. Instead, check the mid-sole of the shoe as this will show damage sooner.

STAYING A STEP AHEAD OF GOLF AND TENNIS INJURIES As golf and tennis season approach it is time to start thinking about how you can keep your body healthy and injury free this season. Preventing these injuries starts with becoming physically active if you are not already. Becoming physically active can be as easy as taking a daily 15-20 minute walk or run accompanied with stretching for 5-10 minutes after. Not only will walking and running help strengthen your lower body, but it will also increase your flexibility. If you’re already walking or running try incorporating a bodyweight workout session 2-3 times a week. A well rounded bodyweight session will help strengthen your upper body, lower body, and core. It will also lead to better balance and improved swing mechanics. If you follow a consistent workout routine, you will help prevent the nagging lower back, elbow and shoulder injuries from occurring. You are also likely to see a boost in your performance on the course/courts. If you do not know how or where to start, we are always happy to help get you moving in the Fitness Center here at Sedgefield. Get ahead and start today. Your body and game will greatly appreciate it. WILL BEASLEY

TENNIS

17

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF TENNIS The tennis season is about to officially start and we could not be more excited. We have a lot more planned on our tennis calendar for 2020 than we’ve ever had before. We will be hosting Sedgefield’s first ever Junior USTA sanctioned Tennis Tournament in April. There will be a lot more pickleball events planned, Gate City ladies will be back in full stride and all the other fun activities we have had in the past will be back as well. Please come out for the exercise and a healthy way of living while having fun playing tennis and pickleball. We have had unusually warm weather which has helped keep the clay courts in decent shape this winter. The courts will look even better when they get resurfaced again in mid-March. You can help us out after this is completed by coming out and playing on them. This helps pack them down quicker and allows them to settle more firmly. TENNIS RESTRINGING: Don’t forget to get your tennis racquet restrung before your USTA or Gate City season begins. The best time to get your racquet restrung is before each season begins which is in March, May and August. All of our Gate City teams had a very strong showing for the fall season and they’re looking to keep that momentum going this spring. Our D4 ladies are the defending City Champions, but we feel very confident that all three of our Sedgefield teams will have a very strong showing in 2020. Good Luck Ladies!!

TENNIS TIP In singles or doubles remember to almost always go cross-court when you’re forced deep near the baseline and only go down the line when you have a short ball.
