CLUB UPDATE & SCC buzz A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR
HALLOWEEN FUN FOR THE STAFF
As I write this, I am nine days away from passing the baton to my successor in the Carolinas Chapter of the Club Management Association of America (CMAA). It has been an honor to serve as the chapter's Chairman for the past year and and to serve on the Board of Directors for the past five years. Our Fall Conference, which signifies the rollover to the new year and installation of the next Board of Directors, will be held in Charleston, SC on November 7-8 and I will officially become the Immediate Past Chairman at our dinner that Sunday evening. It has been a rewarding year filled with an array of extracurricular activities. Although challenging at times to fit everything into the schedule, I have enjoyed it immensely. I am grateful to McConnell Golf for their support of continuing education and involvement in CMAA for their club leaders. After I complete my upcoming year as Immediate Past Chairman, hopefully I can make time to check off a few bucket list vacation destinations! As we approach the final two months of the year, I want to recognize the incredible team we have at Sedgefield and Cardinal. We all hear in the news regularly about staffing shortages in every industry and I'm sure your businesses and lives are affected in many ways. Our clubs are not immune and face these same challenges on a daily basis. It is exhausting and I commend every department manager for their diligence and efforts to provide the level of service you deserve under circumstances that are not always ideal. Please help me extend a bit of appreciation and give them a pat on the back the next time you see them around the clubs. Lastly, on behalf of the entire team, we look forward to a wonderful holiday season with our Sedgefield and Cardinal Family. Thank you for your ongoing support! It is truly appreciated more than you know. Cheers, Beverly Marler

A NOTE FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR The most amazing part of our club’s membership growth over the past couple of years is the number of new members that have been referred by our existing members. Great clubs grow from within as the members want to enjoy their experiences with friends, and this is no different at Sedgefield! Sure, it is nice to meet new people and forge new friendships, and is great that so many of our members are able to make new friends and spend time at the club with existing friends as well. Thank you for your continued referrals, and please do not hesitate to reach out when I can be of assistance.

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF CATERING In a blink of an eye, we are already planning for the holiday season. Store shelves have already begun to show signs of the time. Spooky ghosts, smiling pumpkins, and fallen leaves quickly turn into twinkling lights, forest green garland, and perfectly packaged gifts. Yep, it’s most certainly the holiday season once again. Before you know it, we’ll be roasting and toasting to a beautiful holiday feast. As we prepare for all the fun time we’ll soon be having with family and friends, let’s not forget to give back to all those who have helped us throughout the year. It’s time to celebrate all of our achievements and those special relationships we have built over the past year. What better place to celebrate those special moments with all those who have meant the most to you this past year, than at your club. With two great properties conveniently located right here in Greensboro, why venture anywhere else. No room fees for members and an array of customized gourmet menus to choose from, McConnell Golf is here to help get your holidays off to a great start. No matter the size, style, or theme of your celebration, we can tailor our services to meet the unique needs of your party. As the Holiday Season quickly approaches don’t hesitate to reach out if we can provide you with assistance in your holiday planning process. SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT
Now that autumn is here it brings with it cooler weather, falling leaves, and shorter days. This is also the time of year that we have already raised our mowing heights on the greens, tees, and fairways to prepare them for winter dormancy. Raising the mowing heights is a very important part of our program that aids in protecting the plants from winter injury and making sure there is enough leaf tissue to support a playable surface while the turf isn’t actively growing. It is also a time of year that we battle to keep the course clean from falling leaves. Please bear with us as we try daily to keep up with them using large vacuums and blowers.
I hope you have been able to come out and enjoy the course this fall. We have had great weather so far and have been able to provide good course conditions for you to enjoy. I am hoping that this great weather continues into the winter as we have a few big projects I am looking forward to completing.
This is also the time of year that we must monitor the course for frost in the mornings and impose a delay on starting times if needed. Cart traffic and foot traffic on frosted turf can do irreversible damage to our bermuda grass and that damage will not be visible until the following spring when everything begins to break dormancy and turns green again. As you can tell delaying starting times when frost is present is a very vital part of our responsibility to safeguard your turf from injury and ensure we are doing everything possible to protect the health of the plants. On mornings when the air temperature is around 35 degrees or below, please check with the golf shop for the possibility of any delays. This is still a great time of year to get out and enjoy some good conditions and nice golfing weather before we really get into the much colder weather in January and February. Get out and have some fun and I hope to see you out on the course. Chad Cromer
As most of you know, one project that we will be working on is redoing as many greenside bunkers as we can this winter. What this process will look like is first, we will prioritize the worst greenside bunkers and begin our work there. Once we start the work we will remove all of the contaminated sand, then check the existing drainage and make any repairs needed. We will then be installing a liner to the faces of the bunkers, and finally adding fresh bunker sand. The work will be done in-house by the agronomy team and will take most of the winter to compete. While the bunker project will be our main focus, there are still many trees around the course that we will also be removing. As we look forward to the coming months, one thing we will focus on is keeping the course as clean as possible on a daily basis. Leaves are already starting to fall at a very fast pace, which we are able to clean up quickly when it’s dry. However, when we go through wet stretches, it can be difficult to get our equipment onto the course for daily leaf removal. Please be patient with us as we will be working hard every day to keep the course clean, but also minimize any damage to the turf from our equipment. I am looking forward to starting these projects this winter and setting us up for an even better 2022 golf season. Hopefully there are many warm sunny days this winter for us to get lots of work done and for you to be able come out and enjoy the club. Ross Jernigan

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD HOW TO PLAY YOUR BEST GOLF THIS FALL AND WINTER It is that time of year where you may find the need to turn on the heat to help with those early morning chills. The cool crisp morning air will quickly warm up signaling to us one of the best times of year to play golf. Fall doesn’t have to mean the end of the golf season. You can still have plenty of time to play some of your best golf. Here are four keys to consider helping you play your best golf this Fall and Winter. 1. Cold Weather Effects Distance Cold weather affects your body and the golf ball (two of the most important parts of the game). There’s a science to how much cold weather affects your golf ball. The prevailing math comes out to be a loss of 2-3 yards of distance for every 10 degrees drop in temperature. This happens because cold air is denser than warmer air and as a consequence, your golf ball experiences more resistance. This resistance slows the ball down (Less ball speed = less distance). Colder temperatures also mean that our bodies tend to be less flexible and require us to wear more clothing. The loss of flexibility and the added layers contribute to a decrease in swing speed (Less swing speed = less distance). 2. Consider Switching Golf Balls Playing the correct golf ball is always important especially in colder temperatures. Playing a golf ball that doesn’t allow you to compress it properly makes it hard to achieve the ideal distance and produce the proper feel. Switching to a softer golf ball is encouraged and can easily offset some of the loss of distance and feeling experienced during these colder months. 3. Adjust Your Expectations Let face it, golf is hard. Odds are you are not alone in the way you feel. Sometimes we just must accept that the conditions might contribute to you shooting a high score. Adjust these expectations when making the correct club selection and consider taking an extra club to ensure you give yourself the greatest opportunity to shoot a good score. 4. Consider Working on Your Fitness and Golf Swing Playing in cooler weather can be difficult on your body if you are not prepared. If you want to work on your game and take it to the next level, consider a TPI assessment with our fitness director Sherri Tallent. She along with the Professional Golf Staff can work together to help you with your golf swing while working to overcome any physical limitations. Please call the golf shop to find out more information and to schedule a lesson time with a member of the Professional Golf Staff.
North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. If you are worried about a potential frost delay it is best to call the golf shop to check on conditions at the course before leaving home.
Frost can linger in low-lying and shaded areas long after temperatures have warmed elsewhere.
3. Closely mown turf is at high risk. Frost damage can occur on any part of the golf course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more on each putting green; if there is frost present, all those steps could cause serious damage. 4. A little frost can cause big delays. No signs of frost on the first tee? That doesn’t mean you will get the “all clear” sign. If frost remains in areas that are unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. It is also important to remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will need time to catch up on course preparations before play can begin.
When large trees shade primary playing surfaces, especially on early holes, the course must remain closed even if the frost has melted elsewhere.
FIVE THINGS EVERY GOLFER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FROST DELAYS:
1. Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage. Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage. 2. When it comes to frost delays, location is everything. Many of us have looked out our windows at home and seen no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when we reach the golf course. This is because frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed.
SEDGEFIELD TIMES
5. More light goes a long way. Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on holes played early in the round. The shade from a few trees can keep an entire course closed. See you on the course, Eric Ferguson

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER GOLF EVENTS
Wow! Hard to believe the 2021 golf season is coming to an end. It's been a wonderful year at The Cardinal. We have enjoyed welcoming and getting to know a lot of new Cardinal family members. The Ladies group on Tuesday saw a bunch of new faces play each week. Men’s League was a success again this year with over 600 rounds played during the season. The Club Championships saw new champions on both the Men’s and Ladies' divisions. Leigh Armentrout captured the Ladies' title and Preston Dembowiak played outstanding to take top honors and will carry the title of Club Champion until next year. Rod Patefield and Rob Melhem outlasted the field to win the MemberMember in the spring. The tournaments and competition seem to get better every year and we can’t wait to see what happens in 2022.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20 ANNUAL TURKEY TROT TOURNAMENT
The year’s Ladies Invitational, played September 30, was a huge success. Our goal is/was to create a much bigger event allowing our members to show off their club to more female players from around the Carolinas. In the end, we had teams from Water’s Edge, Mill Creek, and Jamestown come to participate. With the field size of 52, the largest in some time, we enjoyed some great competition. The ladies enjoyed a great reception on Thursday night including a putting contest created by Logan Peck and Jeremy Gamba and wonderful food and drink provided by our Chef Sarah, Landon, and Niles. Once the tournament started, one team was clearly out to claim the title. The team of Julie Streng, Amber Marsh-Elliot, Sheree Crane, and Ann Weiland dominated the field to grab the title. Thank you to all the ladies who participated.
Enjoy complimentary beer, wine, light hors d'oeuvres and merchandise discounts while you complete all your holiday shopping needs and trade a few fun stories from the year at The Cardinal! Happy Holidays!
Our Men’s Invitational, held only one day after the Ladies Invitational, was also a roaring success. With twenty-eight teams playing, we had some really good competition. The round-robin match play format is set up not only to create great action but also some really cool memories. For some, this was the first time playing in a round-robin format so being able to play with more than just one other twosome was exciting in itself. After 5 matches and a 3 hole shootout, the team of Charlie Roberson and Carroll Strong proved to be too much to handle capturing this year’s Invitational Title. Great playing gentlemen.

I’d like to thank not only all the members and guests who came out to the Cardinal and participated in all the events this year, but also our entire team here at the Cardinal. From our cart staff, Jeremy and Logan, to our Food and Beverage team for helping create such great experiences during every event this year.
Without all of these people working together these events wouldn’t be possible. Thank you. Chris Terry

FITNESS NEWS A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS
INDOOR EXERCISES TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME
INDOOR EXERCISES TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME THIS WINTER Golf is a beautiful game but it sure can be frustrating at times. To ensure a great game this spring and so your skills don’t rust while you’re stuck indoors, here are some indoor exercises to try. GET COMFY WITH YOGA | Yes, we know, golf is your thing, not yoga. But the long, cold months of winter have a tendency to cause stiffness in your body. That can in turn limit your range of motion, which — guess what — will drastically undermine your ability to swing a golf club. You don’t have to go hog-wild with the yoga classes in order to enjoy the benefits of yoga. Even just 10 minutes a day can help improve flexibility and core stability. Check out YouTube for short, easy yoga routines that you can do in your living room. WEIGHT TRAINING | It can’t hurt your game to hit the weights once in a while. Golf is a sport, after all, which makes you an athlete of sorts. All athletes can benefit from stronger muscles. For golfers, the glutes and abs are important for balance as well as power. So, the final words of advice: do squats and work on your core. Come next spring, you’ll be fit and ready to take on the world...or at least the golf course! Winter is a great time to get with a golf professional. Contact one of the professionals in our Pro Shop and book a session. Ask to focus on grip technique and they’ll probably show you how to lighten up and loosen the tension in your hands and in your arms. Then, you’ve got a few months to practice with your clubs indoors while watching TV. One way to figure out how loose you should hold a club is to start from zero. The idea is to work up to the least possible tension necessary to keep from dropping the club. To do this, rest the club in the palms of your hands with proper hand position, only don’t apply any muscle power in your grip. Now, tighten your grip only as much as is required in order to take a swing. That should relax the tension in your arms and shoulders, which can also improve your swing. Finally, plan to join us at the fitness center for a golf-specific stretch class - coming late December/January. In this class, we will be performing golf-specific stretching and injury prevention exercises. I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center! Sherri Tallant

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF TENNIS Hello everyone!! Our outdoor tennis season is transitioning over to our indoor season as far as Gate City Clinics is concerned. We hope to continue improving our tennis games, so let’s practice hard over the winter to be ready for our Spring Gate City League. A couple tips to help improve your tennis game are (1) early preparation you can never prepare too early to hit the ball - and (2) exaggerate your follow-through when hitting the ball make sure you follow through completely to your finish point.
If you choose to play outdoors in the winter, be sure to dress in layers and to stretch before playing to keep your muscles loose. Be sure to continue hydrating before, during, and after play. See you on the courts, Pierce Hoover

COOKIES OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER: MOLASSES COOKIES
DECEMBER: SNOWBALL COOKIES
By Kenric Hunt - Brook Valley Country Club
Todd Jackson - Wakefield Plantation
This cookie has been one of my own favorites to buy (Famous Amos) molasses cookies. My very first job was working at Piggly Wiggly where a portion of my check went to buying cookies. Also the taste of them reminds me of time spent with my father as we would eat them often after dinner or for a snack!
Ingredients: 2 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour (spoon & leveled) 1 ½ TSP Baking Soda 2 TSP Ground Ginger 1¼ TSP Ground Cinnamon 1/4 TSP Ground Cloves 1/4 TSP Nutmeg 1/4 TSP Salt
3/4 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened to room temperature 1/2 Cup packed Light or Dark Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/4 Cup Dark Molasses 1 Large Egg, at room temperature 2 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Granulated or Coarse Sugar, for rolling
Directions: Whisk the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt together until combined. Set aside. In a large bowl using a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and both sugars together on high speed until creamy and combined, about 2 minutes. Add the molasses and beat until combined. Then add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. At low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined. The cookie dough will be slightly sticky. Cover dough tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour and up to 2 to 3 days. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. (Always recommended for cookies.) Set aside. Remove cookie dough from the refrigerator. If the cookie dough is chilled longer than 2 hours, let it sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. The cookies may not spread in the oven if the dough is too cold. Roll cookie dough, 1 Tablespoon each, into balls. Roll each in granulated sugar and arrange 3 inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake for 11 to 12 minutes or until edges appears set. If the tops aren’t appearing cracked as pictured, remove the baking sheet from the oven and gently bang it on the counter 2 to 3 times. This will help the warm cookies spread out and crack on top. Return to the oven for 1 additional minute. Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Cookies will stay fresh covered at room temperature for 1 week.

I look forward to the holidays every year when my neighbor brings over a tin of treats for my family. These snowball cookies are the first ones to disappear. Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter 2 TSP Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Sugar 2 TSP Water 2 Cups sifted All-Purpose Flour 1 ¼TSP Salt 1 Cup Chopped Pecans 2 Cups Powdered Sugar Directions: Preheat oven to 325°F. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, vanilla, and sugar. Cream the mixture until light and fluffy. Blend in water. Gradually add in and combine flour and salt, and beat until well blended. Add the pecans. Shape into 1-inch balls. Place balls at least 1 inch apart onto a non-stick cookie sheet. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until firm to touch. While cookies are warm, roll in powdered sugar. Cool on racks for a few minutes. Roll cookies again in powdered sugar. Store in a sealed container up to one week.
