A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
Another trip around the sun is complete, and Sedgefield is now only one year away from celebrating her centennial. I am looking forward to all of the planning and preparation we have in store in 2025 to make 2026’s celebrations unforgettable!
2024 proved to be another exciting year for the club roster, as net growth continued through the year This is a testament to the membership, as the healthiest clubs grow from within and the majority of our new membership applicants were member referrals
With our continued success, we have another Full Golf Membership initiation fee increase planned for March 1, 2025. The current initiation fee of $15,500 will be increased to $17,500 when paid in full, and a total of $20,500 when financed over three annual payments If you have friends, neighbors, or colleagues interested in membership, now is the time to bring them out for a round of golf, dinner, etc to show them everything the club has to offer When you pre-register your prospective member guests with me, we are happy to cover their guest fees
As always, I thank you for your continued support of the club. I wish you all a happy and healthy new year and look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club in 2025 and beyond!
I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER
I hope this message finds everyone doing well as we head into a new year Overall, 2024 was a successful year for the agronomy team The greens have done really well this fall and were very lush heading into the winter months We were able to successfully allow them to grow a little taller while still maintaining a respectable ball roll and speed as we prepared them for the colder weather Please remember that during the winter months we use white plastic inserts at the top edge of the putting green cups instead of paint This is a procedure we implement when the weather gets too cold for the turf to grow and repair the old cup marks. We also do not change hole locations everyday like our normal standard practice during the growing season This allows for better putting surfaces during the winter months with far fewer old cup marks As we move into early spring and the turf on the greens begins to grow again, we will revert back to using the white paint and changing hole locations on a more frequent schedule.
Please keep in mind that the next three months are when we typically have some weather patterns move in that produce cold enough temperatures that warrant us to put out the protective covers on the greens to help prevent any winter damage. We are constantly monitoring the longrange forecast and we will try to give ample time notice on any course closures we may experience
Wintertime gives us a chance to catch up on things around the course that sometimes we get behind on during the growing season and leaf season We will be working on things such as checking all sand depths in bunkers, edging all mulch beds, pruning dead or low limbs, irrigation head audit, leveling irrigation heads around greens, drainage projects, bush hogging all natural areas, and fixing several immediate creek bank issues while still keeping up with the daily maintenance of the course.
Starting sometime in January, the NCDOT will be coming back to replace the old cart bridge and path on #8 that was damaged while they were installing the new bridge along Mecklenburg Road last year. This project should only take several weeks to complete (weather permitting) and will not interrupt normal play The finished product will resemble the wooden bridge on #17 and will be supported by steel beams
Thanks for all your support last year and we look forward to a great 2025! Stay warm and I hope to see you around the club.
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent
If you have been out to the Cardinal in the past few weeks, I am sure you have noticed a big change around the 7th tee All the trees below the gravel walk path going from the 6th green to 7th tee have been removed With the trees removed, the 6th green is getting more morning sun, which is helping the frost to burn off much faster. It will also allow more air flow in the summer for the 6th green, and much more morning sun to the 7th tees in the summer The next step with this project is to get the stumps ground, which we will have done at some point in January. We will then bring in some dirt to fill in some of the low spots and grade the area smooth. The last step will be to sod the hillside We will wait until early spring to lay any sod
The 7th tee project is not the only thing we have planned for the winter. We do have a few more trees around the course that need to be removed to improve course conditions and playability. We also plan to do some pruning of several trees around the course We will remove the lowest limbs on these trees to help our equipment and your golf carts navigate underneath
As we are now in the heart of winter, I am sure most of you are ready to see some warmer weather, no frost delays, and the grass turn green Spring is coming, but we still have a few months of winter golf ahead which means we ask you to please remain mindful of a few key things Please obey the cart rule daily and follow all traffic control signs and stakes on the golf course. All carts should be on the cart path around all tees and greens This is one of the most important things that you can do to help minimize damage and prevent winter kill Also, please be patient with us and the pro shop staff on any delays to your starting time. Frost delays are a part of winter golf in North Carolina and are only done to protect the greens from any damage.

FERG’S FIXES
The Five Keys to Better Practice
Have you ever wondered why your swing on the range doesn’t always show up on the course? Or why hours of grinding away at one drill might not yield the results you’re hoping for? The answer lies in how you practice Let’s dive into the science behind designing effective practice sessions, so you can make the most of your time and see tangible improvements
Sam Robertson and Damian Farrow wrote about this in the Routledge International Handbook of Golf Science Robertson and Farrow reviewed skill acquisition literature and came away with these five keys
1 - Train How You Play (Specificity):
The range isn’t just for picture-perfect shots to a 150-yard flagstick. To get better, your practice needs to mimic real-game scenarios That means working on shots you’ll face during a round like hitting a 7-iron from the rough with the wind against you. Studies show that practicing under these conditions helps players better “couple actions to key information,” like reading lies and controlling trajectory
Takeaway: Add specific challenges to your practice. On the range, imagine a dogleg left or simulate uneven lies
2 - Progress with Purpose:
Improvement comes when your practice is a little bit uncomfortable But it’s not just about trying harder; it’s about practicing smarter Gradually increasing the difficulty, such as narrowing target zones or adding pressure drills, helps you adapt without feeling overwhelmed
Takeaway: Start simple and build complexity. Work on hitting greens from 100 yards before moving to 150.
3 - Push Your Limits (Overload):
Want to improve? Then challenge your comfort zone This could mean increasing the intensity of your practice by hitting shots under time pressure or introducing simulated hazards. When your game stabilizes, it’s time to mix things up again
Takeaway: When practice feels easy, it’s time to step it up. Try hitting 10 drives in a row to a fairway only 20 yards wide
4 - Variety is the Spice of Practice:
Hitting the same shot repeatedly might look great on the range, but it won’t prepare you for the dynamic nature of golf Randomizing your practice for example, alternating clubs or targets improves adaptability
Takeaway: Avoid block practice. Instead, go random. Hit a long iron, then a wedge, then a punch shot
TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD
5 - Don’t Let Skills Fade (Reversibility):
Like muscles, golf skills can atrophy if neglected Missing practice sessions can lead to a drop in performance. The good news? A regular routine, even just a few times a week, can maintain your skills and keep reversibility at bay
Takeaway: Even if time is short, a few purposeful practice sessions a week can make a difference
Bring It All Together
Next time you hit the range, remember: the goal isn’t just to look good it’s to get better. By adding specificity, progression, and variety, and by challenging yourself with a dose of overload, you’ll maximize your potential Track your practice habits and notice the results
1 Layer Up with Winter Golf Apparel - As the weather gets colder, layering up is key to being prepared. Rain pants sometimes can be the best piece of apparel as it helps to block out the wind
Keep Your Hands, Feet, Head and Ears Warm
Be sure to stretch
Bring a nice hot drink in a warm water bottle
5. Lower your expectations and don’t be too worried about your score, just have fun
TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Thank you again for being a part of our family here at the Cardinal. Let’s make 2025 the best year yet at the Cardinal Here’s to another 50 years See you soon around the club Happy Anniversary to The Cardinal!
Wow! Hard to believe we are already turning the calendar to a new year With 2025 upon us, we are proud to celebrate the golden anniversary of the club The Cardinal will be turning 50 this year There are a few of you that remember when the club opened, witnessed all the changes over the years, and have supported the Cardinal tooth and nail the entire time. I’d like to thank you for your support and dedication to the club I would also like to thank those who have decided to make the Cardinal home for yourself and your family recently to witness the next 50 years of the club.
As we look towards the upcoming year, our team has been working hard to create a wonderful tournament calendar for everyone at the club. We will bring back a beloved match play tournament from the past, introduce a junior league, and continue to grow women’s golf with our Ladies Night Out events. Our full tournament calendar will be published very soon, however I wanted to provide everyone with a few save the dates to make sure these events were on your calendar:
Presidents Cup (Men’s Four Ball Match Play) – May 1st
The Dwight (Men’s Member/Member) – May 30-June 1
Dye Cup (Men’s Member/Guest) – August 21-23
Lady Bird Invitational (Ladies Invitational) – September 24 & 25
Championship Weekend (Club Championship) – October 3-5
Information for these events and all other club tournaments will be available through the Tournament Directory in the Golf Genius app using GGID:CARDINALTOURNAMENTS
New Year brings new opportunities to improve. Our team will introduce a new pace of play policy that we feel will help encourage a better pace of play around the course As you all know, pace of play can kill an enjoyable round of golf. No one likes waiting on every shot, nor should they have to. We will encourage allowing groups to play through No one will complain if your groups allows faster players/groups play through Course advisors will also be asking groups to skips holes ahead to catch up on pace. None of this should come up as a surprise to anyone Everyone ask the professional staff to help combat this issue We are only trying to help create the best experience for all players.
Another area we look to improve is with our club fitting and lesson program We are adding a new launch monitor to our arsenal of tools. This will help us provide each golfer we fit and/or coach with better data in their search or new equipment or swing mechanics Our team has partnered with Mizuno, Ping, TaylorMade, Callaway, and Titleist this year to provide you with ample equipment to better fit your game. Our professional staff will be conducting more “Fitting Fridays” on the range throughout the season, along with individual fitting days with each manufacturer The Operation36 program should feel a little different this year as we continue to improve our Cardinal Academy Our Operation36 program will be driven by our new assistant professional, Nic Hasler Nic has spent a lot of time this winter learning the program and coming up with ways to generate more interest and create learning opportunities for each individuals through the program In the coming months, we will move from Coach360 to CoachNow Academy for lesson scheduling, video capture, and lesson details. The great thing about this app is the ability to view videos and lesson information on your personal device Take your videos with you to the range, to the couch, or with you on vacation. We want to be your main resource for fitting and lessons. Let us help you in the coming year!

Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing you at the fitness center Whether your passion is golf, tennis, pickleball or another sport - a balanced fitness program will make your season bright.
Exercise and stress relief
Exercise increases your overall health and your sense of well-being, which puts more pep in your step every day But exercise also has some direct stress-busting benefits.
It pumps up your endorphins Physical activity may help bump up the production of your brain's feel-good neurotransmitters, called endorphins. Although this function is often referred to as a runner's high, any aerobic activity, such as a rousing game of tennis or a nature hike, can contribute to this same feeling
It reduces negative effects of stress Exercise can provide stress relief for your body while imitating effects of stress, such as the flight or fight response, and helping your body and its systems practice working together through those effects This can also lead to positive effects in your body including your cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems by helping protect your body from harmful effects of stress
It's meditation in motion After a fast-paced game of racquetball, a long walk or run, or several laps in the pool, you may often find that you've forgotten the day's irritations and concentrated only on your body's movements As you begin to regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, you may find that this focus on a single task, and the resulting energy and optimism, can help you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.
It improves your mood Regular exercise can increase self-confidence, improve your mood, help you relax, and lower symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. Exercise can also improve your sleep, which is often disrupted by stress, depression and anxiety All of these exercise benefits can ease your stress levels and give you a sense of command over your body and your life
Put exercise and stress relief to work for you
A successful exercise program begins with a few simple steps.
Consult with your doctor If you haven't exercised for some time or you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine
Walk before you run Build up your fitness level gradually Excitement about a new program can lead to overdoing it and possibly even injury For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity Examples of moderate aerobic activity include brisk walking or swimming, and vigorous aerobic activity can include running or biking. Greater amounts of exercise will provide even greater health benefits Also, aim to do strength training exercises for all major muscle groups at least two times a week
Do what you love Almost any form of exercise or movement can increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. The most important thing is to pick an activity that you enjoy Examples include walking, stair climbing, jogging, dancing, bicycling, yoga, tai chi, gardening, weightlifting and swimming. And remember, you don't need to join a gym to get moving. Take a walk with the dog, try body-weight exercises or do a yoga video at home
Pencil it in In your schedule, you may need to do a morning workout one day and an evening activity the next But carving out some time to move every day helps you make your exercise program an ongoing priority Aim to include exercise in your schedule throughout your week.
Stick with it
Starting an exercise program is just the first step Here are some tips for sticking with a new routine or refreshing a tired workout:
Set SMART goals. Write down SMART goals specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-limited goals If your primary goal is to reduce stress in your life, your specific goals might include committing to walking during your lunch hour three times a week Or try online fitness videos at home Or, if needed, find a babysitter to watch your children so that you can slip away to attend a cycling class.
Find a friend Knowing that someone is waiting for you to show up at the gym or the park can be a powerful incentive Try making plans to meet friends for walks or workouts Working out with a friend, co-worker or family member often brings a new level of motivation and commitment to your workouts And friends can make exercising more fun!
Change up your routine If you've always been a competitive runner, take a look at other, less competitive options that may help with stress reduction, such as Pilates or yoga classes As an added bonus, these kinder, gentler workouts may enhance your running while also decreasing your stress Exercise in short bursts Even brief bouts of physical activity offer benefits For instance, if you can't fit in one 30-minute walk, try a few 10-minute walks instead. Being active throughout the day can add up to provide health benefits Take a mid-morning or afternoon break to move and stretch, go for a walk, or do some squats or pushups Interval training, which entails brief (60 to 90 seconds) bursts of intense activity at almost full effort, can be a safe, effective and efficient way of gaining many of the benefits of longer duration exercise. What's most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle
Whatever you do, don't think of exercise as just one more thing on your to-do list Find an activity you enjoy whether it's an active tennis match or a meditative meander down to a local park and back and make it part of your regular routine Any form of physical activity can help you unwind and become an important part of your approach to easing stress (Mayo Clinic)
JANUARY FITNESS CHALLENGE
DRiTri
The DriTri includes a row, bike, and a run on the treadmill The order of the events mimics an outdoor triathlon, with the row preparing the body for the rest of the event The treadmill portion can be completed by jogging, running, power walking, or doing intervals. The goal is to finish, not to race against others
Try to improve your distance each time.
DRiTri - 10 minute Rower
20 minute Bike
15 minute Treadmill
I like to do the DriTri as my Saturday workout
Gym etiquette is about being considerate of others and the gym itself. Here are some tips for being a good gym-goer:
Be prepared: Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for your workout
Clean up: Wipe down equipment with disinfectant wipes or spray before and after use
Ask permission: If someone is using equipment you want to use, ask if you can share it or if they are almost done
Share equipment: During busy times, be considerate of others and share equipment
Limit rest time: Take breaks during your workout but be mindful of how long you're resting.
Avoid dropping weights: Dropping weights can be dangerous and startle others
While it’s tempting to scroll through Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok in between sets, this can be very distracting and even annoying to others Only use your phone for emergencies or quick checks and always step away from equipment or high-traffic areas to take calls or send messages
I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center.
