CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER

Summer is here and we are in full swing. The pool has tremendous participation, with Live after 5s, swim meets and more We are all happy that the new pool chaise lounge chairs have been in place for a few weeks, I hope they have made your pool experience even better. In the clubhouse we have had Grape Nuts, Father's Day Steakout Under the Stars and pasta nights that have been a huge success Camps, fitness classes, and every area of the club have been active. We are only a third of the way through summer, so get out here and enjoy your club!

Wyndham structures are now well under way and will only continue as we get closer to August. Advance week is the last week of July and the tournament is August 3-6 Weekly and single day tickets are available for purchase for McConnell open air sky boxes located on 15, 17, 18 and Slammin' Sammy's Pub downstairs in the ballroom. Live music, fabulous cuisine and drinks for days will be the best way to spend your time at the Wyndham Remember you must enter the ballroom from behind 9 green. They will not let you walk through the front Clubhouse doors Member Charge and credit cards accepted in all McConnell Golf hospitality venues If you are a newer member and unfamiliar with the tournament, stop in over the next month (prior to the tournament) and let us give you a tour

We are continuing to upgrade the clubhouse, with new windows, replacing wood, painting, pressure washing, replacing hydraulic lines in the back-to-back elevators We have replaced the HVAC units in the Greenside Café and bag room, replaced the heating elements in the saunas and refurbished the benches. A couple of those unsightly net panels will be replaced on the driving range soon There was a water leak in the driving range parking lot that was replaced and many other course improvements. The clubhouse landscaping was replenished and exterior lighting added The tennis facility has also been painted inside and out Oh, and Pierce has added Lululemon in his tennis shop! The greatest activity in dining has been the Red Fox Lounge and Greenside Café We will continue to focus on service logistics in these areas and you will see some changes in the near future! High quality cuisine, timely service in a professional manner is a Sedgefield tradition and we aim to exceed your expectations on every encounter

The Cardinal continues to be active with Chris, Ross and the team having done a tremendous job preparing the clubhouse and golf course for a busy season Ross continues to replace winter kill, sodding areas all over the golf course The weather has finally become his friend and this Bermuda grass has really filled in over the last few weeks. Pete's Place has been renovated and should reopen on Saturday, July 1 This will be used as a turn house with beverages, sandwiches, hot dogs and snacks. Dye's Tavern will continue to be open for your ala carte meals. Please remember, do NOT bring your own food and beverage You have asked for these areas to be available, let's keep them active and house.

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

While we have had a mostly mild and cooler late spring and early summer, I am convinced that the heat is on the way It always happens as the Wyndham Championship approaches Nicer weather turns into hot, sticky and steamy just in time to spend the week outdoors. Regardless, it is still one of my favorite weeks of the year! I love the pageantry of it all; the people, the sounds, the smell of fresh cut grass And maybe even a margarita (or two) and some great live music at Margaritaville by the end of the week!

SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

This year the spring temperatures have been unseasonably cooler than we are typically accustomed to in this part of the state Thus far it has not been favorable growing conditions for the bermuda grass turf throughout the golf course We have been providing some extra fertility on the few thin areas we have but we just haven’t had the warm weather to encourage the plants to grow and spread like they typically would this time of year. We went back and looked at the previous 5 years’ temperature data and compared it to this years May and June numbers. Here are the results:

Previous 5 year data:

May – 90.6 average high / 38.8 average low June – 93.6 average high / 53.0 average low

2023 data:

May – 84 average high / 37 average low June – 88 average high / 46 average low

We will eventually get some hot humid weather and the bermuda will begin to thrive Overall the course conditions are pretty good and things have healed up nicely from our aerification in May We will now start to focus on getting the course prepped and conditioned for this year's Wyndham Championship. The tournament buildout is well underway and I am excited to see some of the changes this year The structures behind #17 and #18 will be different as the company that provided the trophy suites on those holes is no longer in business The proposed new Key to Wyn structure at the putting green should be pretty cool and will have a artificial putting green on the roof.

The next 2 months are always a busy, fun, and an exciting time around the club. Come on out and enjoy the course before the pros get here!

Hope to see you out on the course,

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Mother Nature is really not being very friendly to us here at the Cardinal this year We came out of a winter with record rainfall and lots of turf damage, and into a spring with record cool temperatures that dramatically slowed the growth of the bermudagrass With the temperatures slowly warming up to normal in June, we have seen tremendous recovery around the course that has greatly reduced the amount of sod work we once thought we were going to have to do. We have already put down over 20,000 square feet of sod and there is a lot more to do As you have seen, we started sodding the smaller areas around greens first and are now mowing into the larger areas in the fairways My hope is to be done sodding all winter damage by the end of July.

I know it seems like it is taking a while to get the sod down, and it may seem like we are only doing a little bit of sod each week Well, you are right and I feel the same way, but there are a few reasons why that is the case. First, here at the Cardinal we only have a crew of ten people total in the summer working on the maintenance crew, so there is only so much sod we can put down in a week and also maintain the rest of the course Second is sod availability; the turf we are putting back in these areas that have routine winter kill is a new bermudagrass called Tahoma 31. I am very excited about putting Tahoma 31 bermudagrass in the areas have struggled year after year. In test after test, Tahoma 31 shows its exceptional winter hardiness It has tested up to 75% more cold-tolerant than other bermudagrass varieties With that being said, Tahoma 31 is in high demand, and with it still being a new variety there are only a few sod farms growing it. After talking with Michael Shoun, we both felt it would be best to wait until Tahoma 31 became available and put the best turf in these areas

I do feel the course is improving weekly, and I assure you we are working hard to return the course to the standard to which you have become accustomed.

See you on the course!

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Half Way There! Wow, it's hard to believe that half of the year is already behind us It seems as though we just got started Let’s take a look back at a few of the highlights from the first two quarters of the year. Ladies and Juniors Operation36 was a blast The classes keep getting bigger with 20 ladies and over 30 juniors participating this past spring We’ve had a bunch of the ladies making it past the first stage from 25 yards, with a couple others cruising past 100 yards, now at 150 yards from the green On the junior’s side, we are seeing progress from each player New personal bests from each level are being achieved, even if they don’t pass the stage We have 2 juniors at 200 yards with others nipping at their heels at 150 yards It's great to see all the excitement, and sometime disappointment, in the juniors faces as they pass or barely miss a new stage. Let’s keep the momentum going in the fall.

Our first men’s major was held at the end of May with the Member/Member. After 36 holes and a shootout, which included all the flight winners, Scott Ochs and John Lewis were crowned the 2023 Champions Was great to see such a large field come out and participate. We had a lot of new faces join us this year, which is always great to see As the club continues to grow, these type of events will be very competitive and a great way to all come together and enjoy a weekend of golf. Wednesday Night Men’s League is once again thriving with an average of 28 players each week With half of the schedule season in the books, the race to make it into the season ending shootout is quite tight. With the varying gross and net formats, this season has proven to be one of the best yet If you need a midweek 9hole round, sign up for the Men’s League New to the club, new to the area, sign up for Men’s League.

The Cardinal Ladies Golf Association has been rolling this spring With play every Tuesday, it's fun to see so many women playing the game If you are looking for a great way to meet and play with likeminded ladies in a fun way, think about joining the CLGA

The golf course took a beating during the later stages of winter with quite a bit of winter damage Mother Nature didn’t help with cooler than expected conditions However, we have to give Ross and his team a ton of credit for doing all they could to give us a golf course that plays just as hard as it ever has By the time you read this, Ross will have put down over 2 truckloads of sod around the course, including 17 fairway which one of the worst hit from the winter. Any remaining damage will be repaired in the coming weeks. Thank you to Ross and his team!
