“PURE GOLF FOR THE TRUE GOLFER”
Watch now on Youtube.com/McConnellGolf
Premier play Precise designs Pure golf
What began as the historical preservation of Donald Ross’ last golf course design in Raleigh, NC, has blossomed into a portfolio of championship courses from the mountains to the coast Our “pure golf for the true golfer” motto transcends agronomy, sport and culinary disciplines it is a principle lived every day through exceptional facilities and service The “Pure Golf for the True Golfer” video encapsulates this principle, made in celebration of #NationalGolfDay.
Awesome day at Sedgefield, home of the @wyndhamchamp PGA tournament Such a fun golf course, and even got to meet PGA Tour pro @alexsmalley golf

. . . After an intense application and interview process I am so proud to announce that Katelyn was awarded the scholarship and that the Cardinal by Pete Dye is now her home course! This allows her to regularly play the course and use the practice facility, build relationships with members, volunteer at events and more We are so grateful for this opportunity and what this means for the growth of her game. On a spiritual note, Katelyn just personally experienced how God provides, how he puts the right people in your path and open doors. He really is a way maker!

Aaron & Sylvia Davis
Aaron (AD) is a real estate lawyer, performing residential home closings while Sylvia is a nurse at Moses Cone Outpatient Surgical Center. They have two grown children; son Cole (28) and he works with crop farmers in North Carolina and daughter Sydney (26) is a pharmacist at Wesley Long “Both of our kids are homeowners, so Sylvia and I are empty nesters except for our two little buddies, Ellie (Boston Terrier) and Lucy (Maltapoo),” says Aaron “I was born in Kissimmee, Florida and came here to play golf in college in 1988. I met Sylvia my senior year of college and have been here ever since living in the Pleasant Garden community Sylvia is native to Pleasant Garden ”
Aaron continues, “Interesting facts: In 1986, at 15 years of age, I made double eagle on a par 5 I was the youngest double eagle in the United States that year 11 months later I recorded a second double eagle at the age of 16. I am a Huge Florida Gator fan and love to watch sports. I am very excited to be at Sedgefield I have a handful of friends that are members and am already enjoying playing golf with them ”
Jeremy & Charlie Johnson; children Amelia (3) and Callan (1)
The Johnsons relocated to the Triad from Wilmington almost 7 years ago Jeremy is originally from Matthews, NC and Charlie is from Upstate SC Jeremy owns an independent wealth management practice while Charlie stays home with their two children, Amelia and Callan Charlie and Jeremy live in Oak Ridge and are excited to network, golf (teach the kids to golf) and maybe learn pickleball! Jeremy graduated from UNCW, Charlie from Clemson University Family time is a treasure for their family and they’re looking forward to making many memories at Sedge! Outside of work and family time, and Jesus, they love to explore various culinary scenes!
Margot & Mark Jozefowicz
Originally from Canada, Margot and Mark met in college 45 years ago there, and subsequently moved with their two young children to North Carolina in 1995 for a job opportunity. They were relocated to Greensboro in 2008 and have made Sedgefield their home They were members of the club for a few years, and made a number of great friends Now that their kids have grown up, and Mark is semi-retired, they are excited to rejoin Sedgefield, renew old friendships and hopefully make lots of new ones! They do a lot of traveling, and both enjoy an active lifestyle, playing tennis, (maybe pickleball), hiking, skiing and the beach. They love to entertain, hang out with friends, and are looking forward to enjoying all that Sedgefield has to offer
A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
As we are in the midst of the “Dog Days of Summer,” while reflecting upon the whirlwind of a spring we enjoyed at Sedgefield it seems like it was months if not years ago! Just like the rainy late winter/early spring has led to a hot and dry summer, membership activity at the club went from moderate to wide open just like that! Now July is here, (you can practically hear the Bermuda greens growing in his heat!) and Wyndham is just around the corner Before you know it the kids will be back in school, college football will be in the air along with a slight chill in the breeze and rustling fall leaves changing color.
Although the seasons change, the one constant at Sedgefield is how our members feel about the club. I would say 75% of potential new members that I interact with either heard of the club through current members and/or have been sponsored by a member The most successful clubs grow from within, and that is what makes Sedgefield such a special place
Although my busy schedule keeps me from seeing many of you often, I always look forward to the Wyndham Championship when I get a chance to catch up with many of you. I look forward to seeing how much your kids have grown, how many strokes you have taken off of your handicap, and hearing about your family’s latest adventures
I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club, at the Wyndham Championship and beyond

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER
A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
The warm summer time temperatures are finally here and the bermuda turf is thriving Aerification went very smoothly and things have healed up nicely Now that the turf is aggressively growing we have started implementing our cultural practices that will provide you with the best possible playing conditions. Each Monday that we are closed we will be lightly verti-grooming the greens followed by a light topdressing of fine sand This process will aid in keeping the grain on the greens to a minimal and improving ball roll and firmness of the greens This time of year we also will be lightly topdressing tees and landing zones in fairways to dilute the thatch and also aid in a smoother firmer surface.
With summer time also means that the Wyndham Championship is just around the corner The contractors that perform the tournament build will have already started by the time you are reading this and it will be the same company as years past which is good as they have normally been as respectful as possible performing all this work while you are trying to enjoy your round of golf Should there ever be a problem please don’t hesitate to contact me and I will notify the lead foreman performing the work.
I hope to see many of you out on the course this summer!
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent
Summer is here and I am happy with the current condition of the golf course We had a great spring of warm weather to really get the Bermuda growing It is so nice to be able to say that the sewage project is complete, and all the sod is on the ground Land Innovations did a great job with the restoration and sodding to help get the course back to normal It is going to take some time for all of the sodded areas to grow together and thicken up I have already fertilized all of the sodded areas to help it grow in I have also ordered some additional fertilizer for some of the weaker areas to help them recover and grow in.
The agronomy team has just finished up our closed week for course aerification The greens were aerified again and are recovering very quickly Tees were core aerified, and fairways were aerified with a solid tine. We also got out the slicer for all of the high traffic areas in the rough. A slicer makes a deep slice into the ground with very little disturbance to the surface This will help alleviate soil compaction and allow air and water into the soil to provide a better stand of rough in these areas
As we are now into summer, we are in full maintenance mode. We will continue to water and fertilize the newly sodded areas to improve the turf quality We will also continue with a few small sod projects around course to improve the condition of the course For the most part, our focus is on maintaining the course and providing great playing conditions daily. I hope everyone has a great summer of golf, and I hope to see you on the course
I am happy with the current condition of the course and once the restoration work is complete, I think we are in for a great 2024 golf season.
Ross Jernigan Golf Course Superintendent
TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
What a fantastic start that we have had as we can officially say Summer has arrived The first half of the year brought us our fair share of rain, but temperatures stay warm and the golf course greened up nicely Last month, we hosted the AJGA Boys event which saw our own McConnell Scholar Pennson Badgett finish in a T-5th at -2 under Par He was one of only 12 players to finish under par for the 54-hole event This past week we hosted our Junior Golf Camp. The kids really enjoyed their time and learned some key fundamentals, but most importantly they were having fun!
I am so excited to celebrate July 4th and hope you are able to do the same with your family and friends. My kiddos are so excited to go swimming, eat ice cream, and watch some fireworks! The build for the Wyndham Championship is well underway I want to ask that each of you please use caution in the parking lots. There are more kids going to the pool who sometimes might not be paying attention Also, be aware of the workers on the golf course These guys are doing their best to stay out of your way.
Lastly, I am so lucky to get to do what I love I have each of you to thank for making my job so much fun. Let’s make the Summer the best one yet!
All the Best, Eric

FERG’S FIXES
ShotsInTheWind (byLouStagner)
We are going to keep this one short and sweet.
How much harder is into the wind vs downwind? The data below is for a 10-index player from 150 yards in the fairway The wind speed is between 12mph and 16mph.
HIT GREEN PERCENTAGE
Helping wind: 48%
Hurting wind: 28%
HOW WIDE IS TYPICAL SHOT PATTERN?
Helping wind: ~68% of shots will be in an area that is ~25 yards wide Hurting wind: 68% of shots will be in an area that is 33 yards wide
My Thoughts
As you already know, into the wind gets a lot harder. Our shot patterns get noticeably larger Which means we hit less greens Work on your knockdown shot My favorite drill for this is the "two clubs less" drill.
I will take my 8 iron, and practice hitting it the same distance as my pitching wedge The 7 iron same distance as a 9 iron 6 iron like an 8 etc
Keeping the ball lower and reducing spin will help you play those more difficult into the wind shots

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Dog Days of Summer
Wow! We are definitely in the thick of summer now. The longest day of the year is behind us, however the hot weather is here to stay. It feels more like pool weather than golf weather. However, the Cardinal is still rocking and rolling with a few fun events to tide you over until the cooler weather arrives. Before we jump into what’s upcoming, let remind everyone of the fun we’ve had so far this year
Not sure how much fun it was, but made it through a wet and muddy winter/spring With the sewer project in high gear, we all had to make adjustments to our game to avoid some obstacles that were in the way; bulldozers, huge holes in the ground, and those ugly mats Luckily, we have all that mess in our rearview mirror and the course has been rebuilt and looking good
In May, our tournament calendar really kicked into overdrive with an event almost every week Started way back at the beginning of the month with our Cardinal Cup This team match play event pitted 24 players against each other for 2 days After 2 days of 4-Ball Match Play, the Black Team captained by Andrew Carter pulled out a 1 point win over the Red team Great competition led to a lot of trash talking over the weekend If you enjoy match play, keep this event in mind next year The Cardinal’s PGA Junior League team continues its good play from last year This year’s team continues to develop new skills, show wonderful respect, and has delivered on the golf course With matches and practices stretching all the way back into the beginning of May, this team is really coming together as we approach our final few matches of the summer season Keep up the good work Finally, as we finish out the month of May and rung in the beginning of June, the Cardinal hosted our first major of the Year The Men’s Member/Member was a huge success with 72 players, our largest field, playing in a round robin format This format allowed for more interaction with all players and really good competition After 5 rounds and 45 holes, and a 3 holes shootout, Jimmy Orr and Trip Hurd outlasted the field to become the 2024 Champions. Congratulations to these two players.
The month of June started a little slower with Ross and his team giving the course a bit of attention with a mild punch on the greens, fairways, and tees. Luckily this process was only temporary as conditions have rebounded nicely to give us a wonder golf course to play heading into the 2nd half of the year. We do have our annual Parent/Child event coming up at the end of June, however I’ll won’t be able to talk about that until next newsletter. Stay tuned!
The Cardinal has seen a couple upgrades in the past two months, just in case you didn’t notice. A portion of the parking lot was repaved. The area right in front of the putting green and bag drop area saw a new coat of asphalt laid to give us a smoother ride when coming to the club. We’ve seen new patio furniture make its way to the club These new pieces have made a world of difference to the overall look and feel of this area Talking about the patio, the floor of the patio also saw a fresh coat of stain go down last month This plus the new furniture has made the patio the place to be (when it’s not 100* outside) Come check out the club We might surprise you!

SUMMERATSEDGEFIELD
Staying hydrated during the summer months has already been challenging with hotter than usual temperatures during June Staying hydrated will keep your body functioning at its best. Try these tips to ensure you are getting optimum hydration throughout the day:
Drink 8 ounces of water upon waking and before bedtime
Drink water throughout the day. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to start drinking water By the time you feel thirsty, you could have lost two to three cups of your total body water composition Infuse water with slices of fruit, veggies, or herbs.
Fun fact: Approximately 20 percent of your fluid intake comes from food –withtheremaining80percentfrombeverages Thisisgreatnewsasyou enjoyallofthewonderfulsummerfruitsandvegetables.
