A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
Spring brings a surge of excitement to the club as membership activity flourishes, largely driven by referrals from current members, echoing the sentiment of the Dave Matthews Band song, "The Best of What’s Around " The lyric that stuck with me from the song is “it’s not where, but who you’re with that really matters.” I try to remember this in life and always cherish the moments we have with those around us. When you refer your friends to join the club, you actually get the best of both worlds: quality time with great friends AND amazing amenities and facilities at a topranked golf course. What more could you ask for?
Speaking of golf, there has been a policy change as to how reciprocal golf access works when wanting to play at other McConnell Golf properties. The total number of annual reciprocal rounds allowed at other courses for cart fee-only has increased from twelve to fifteen With this, the number of cart fee-only rounds that can be played at one particular reciprocal course now goes from six to three As a reminder, golf members are allowed to play the other clubs an unlimited number of times each calendar year and the aforementioned restrictions apply to cart fee-only access. While our b rs can view the tee sheets of the other clubs on the website, all cal rounds must be booked through the Sedgefield or Cardinal pro lease also remember that driving range and practice facility access reciprocal clubs is limited to when a tee time is scheduled. All played at Sedgefield & Cardinal are included with your rship and do not count toward reciprocity
As we celebrate our 98th anniversary and look forward to our centennial in a couple of years, we strive to continue building upon our new vision statement: Building memories that last for generations! I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club and once again, appreciate all of the referrals from our members!

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER
A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
Warmer weather is just around the corner, and with it comes new life to plants and animals We are already experiencing some plants and trees blooming with the stretch of warm weather we experienced in late February We are also seeing some Bermuda starting to green up on south-facing slopes, and the greens have actually begun to produce new leaf tissue We appear to be several weeks ahead this year of our normal timeframe for the Bermuda to begin its greening up process As the days continue to get longer, the sun angle gets higher, and the temperatures continue to warm, things will continue to green up around the course.
What can you expect during this transition period from winter dormancy to the spring greening up process? With the rough, we will be scalping off all the old leaf blades from last season to open up the canopy and allow the warmer air temperatures to reach the soil. This will create a lot of old grass clipping debris that we will be blowing into piles and picking up as we go We will start this process just before the rough starts to really green up Next will be the fairways, approaches, and tees We will begin the process of scalping these areas down once we feel there is enough new growth to support this process. It will consist of mowing well below normal in multiple directions to reset the turf canopy and remove all old growth to start the season fresh Last, and most importantly is the greens This process is more gradual and requires patience. Once we feel the cold weather is behind us and the turf really starts actively growing, we will begin mowing the greens at a safe height of cut We will be watching how the plants respond and lowering that height gradually to eventually achieve a tight surface that provides a good ball roll
The key word in this process is PATIENCE. There will be a time in this process when the greens are not up to our normal standards This is to be expected We can’t push the gas pedal full throttle just yet, like we can during the warmer months of June through August If we get too aggressive too soon, it could have adverse effects and weaken the plants. We will be doing all we can and what we feel comfortable doing during this transition period to provide the best possible surfaces at that time This will include the introduction of light topdressings, vertigrooming, and often double mowing The time frame we typically start these processes begins in mid-to-late March with mowing the greens first, then we follow up with starting to mow tees and fairways around the first to second week in April, and lastly, it will be scalping down the rough typically in mid-to-late April This typical timeframe could be sooner this year due to the above normal temperatures we experienced during late February.
Let’s all hope for an early spring and some good golfing weather! Hope to see you out on the course.
Chad CromerA NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT
We've had an eventful start to 2024, and not really in a good way. To begin with, the course has received 9 68 inches of rain so far in 2024, and if you add the 7 3 inches of rain in December, we are sitting at around 17 inches of rainfall in the last two and a half months Needless to say, these are not the ideal conditions for golf or for carrying out a large-scale sewage project All the rain has slowed down the project by a few weeks, but the crew still believes they should be off the course by the end of March
This is normally the time of year when we can focus on course improvement projects like drainage or tree work Due to some major flooding the course has experienced on more than one occasion, we have been spending a lot of time on course cleanup this winter We were able to add some additional drainage between the 6th green and the cart path, which is already working great to dry this area out. Also, as I am sure you have noticed, we were able to have the three large oaks in the parking lot removed This not only allows us to open the putting green much sooner in the winter, as it is now in full sun and able to thaw much faster, but it will also improve the growing environment for all turf in the area. We are still hoping to carry out a large drainage project on the seventh fairway The faster we can get the seventh fairway to dry out, the faster we can clean it up after a flood
With spring right around the corner, that means our first greens aerification of the year is approaching The course will be closed on March 4th and 5th to allow us time to aerify, clean up, and top-dress the greens As most of you know, the March aerification is always the slowest one of the year for the greens to recover from due to the cooler weather. We have a good fertility plan in place to get the greens back to normal as soon as Mother Nature will allow

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Are you ready to put this cold and rainy weather behind us and get the 2024 season underway? We certainly are ready! It’s hard to believe, but our Ladies and Senior Golf Associations will host their annual open breakfast next week. These events always signify the start to the golf season here at the club We will kick off our first event with our annual Season Opener in March, followed by our Master’s Pro Member/Member in April.
I ask each of you take a few minutes to look over and read through all of the information in this issue of the newsletter There is a lot of stuff to keep you informed of what we have in store for you in March and April. We look forward to a wonderful spring, and hope you will plan to join us at the club!

FERG’S FIXES
Short Game Benchmarks (by Lou Stagner)
I had a question from my good friend, Dr. Brandon Horvath, about the short game He wanted to know what benchmarks he should use when practicing shots around the green This required a DEEP DIVE into the DATABASE. The chart below is median proximity (in feet) from the rough. This is across ALL shots, and is a great representation of performance in “typical” rough If your rough is a lot longer/shorter, these numbers will shift a bit.
My Thoughts
Whatever your handicap index is, pick the index above that is just better than yours, and try to get as many balls as you can inside the median proximity Please make sure you are dropping balls into RANDOM lies Do not roll each ball to create a good lie. Take a handful of balls, throw them over your shoulder, and play from whatever lie you get. I like to play this game with six balls and alternate shots across three different holes Keep a small notebook in your bag and track how you are performing Once you can regularly get 70% (seventy percent) of your shots inside the proximity you are benchmarking against, move up to the next handicap level Once you are benchmarking yourself against scratch, try to get as many balls as you can inside the median proximity. If you spend time on this, your short game will improve significantly, GUARANTEED!
OPERATION 36
This 6-week class will feature 6 group instructional sessions, as well as 3 9-hole events where you will actually play 9-holes from their current yardage. Players will start out at 25yds from the green, progressing backwards only after they are able to shoot 36 on 9-holes
LADIES

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
The Cardinal has seen bustling activity over the past couple of months, from managing natural elements to city projects like expanding sewer lines on our property. With minor improvements to the building and kitchen underway, we're gearing up for the new season starting in April
As the weather warms, we have a lineup of exciting activities planned for the first few weeks, promising an energetic start April heralds the arrival of the Masters, but before that, we kick off the season with our Season Opening event on April 6, a cherished time to reunite with members old and new Following that, our attention turns to Masters week, highlighted by our Annual Masters Par 3 event on April 12, featuring a twist in the format for added excitement. Expect two weeks packed with golfing action and the flavors of spring as we usher in the new season
As we prepare for the season, we're also adjusting our operational schedule, opening on Mondays and closing on Tuesdays, starting April 1 This change aims to enhance member experience and welcome players from neighboring clubs on previously closed days. With the promise of greener fairways and improved chipping conditions, we share some tips for refining your chipping game, ensuring a smoother experience on the course this year.
Decide what is the best shot for the conditions: Pitch or Chip If you have to go over something, you’ll need to pitch with a more lofted club If conditions are fairly flat and not much rough, let’s chip (lesslofted club) I see too many amateurs only using their most lofted wedges around the green when a simple bump and run will do.
Setup for each situation is the same: feet close together, body open slightly to the hole, weight on the lead foot, and choke down slightly on the club.
Use good tempo to “rock” the club to the backswing, and through to the finish. Don’t rush the swing. Small backswing, accelerate through
Hit down on the ball. Let the bounce on the bottom of club glide through the turf Ball should be hit with the 3rd – 6th groove on the face You want ball first contact with club
On your follow through, your lead wrist should be facing the target, not the sky No need to lift the ball up
Use these keys to help improve you short game and get the ball closer to the hole If you need any further help, please be sure to see a member of your professional staff at The Cardinal or Sedgefield
Thank you for being part of our families and we look forward to seeing you around each club real soon

FITNESS RECOVERY
We now know the lasting implications of injury and burnout. Taking time to show your muscles some care after all that hard work could provide the push you need to feel better and perform better RECOVERY classes, a new fitness trend for 2024, can produce various benefits, including increased mobility, increased range of motion, better posture, better quality of movement, reduced soreness, reduced chronic pain or stiffness, and improved quality of life. Taking time to focus on recovery after all that hard work could provide the push you need to not only feel better, but perform better Burnout is real It’s important to remember, if you’re not stopping to rest and recover, your future can become one of burnout, injury, or both
Just think about it... our bodies can take a beating during our workouts. Muscles fatigue and they can break down if you go from one to another without adequate recovery efforts While stretching before or after exercising is better than nothing, the newest trend we’re seeing in the fitness world is recovery-focused classes. These types of classes allow individuals to work on restoring and repairing muscle to avoid injury or overuse It also allows the body and mind to slow down, which is a nice way to balance out high-intensity workouts.
Recovery-focused classes can actually produce a variety of benefits that include increased mobility, increased range of motion, better posture, better quality of movement, reduced soreness, reduced chronic pain or stiffness, and improved quality of life
Look for recovery-focused classes in the weekly fitness email and be sure to stop by and check out our new fitness equipment!
I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center.
