CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

The golf season is finally upon us, and we have GREAT news to share with you!! We had zero winterkill in the fairways and collars this year! This is a first for me in the nine years I have been here Typically, every year we experience some type of damage on holes #5 and #10 due to their location and shade, but this year those fairways are doing fantastic and will not require any repair work This should really set us up for a great season and good turf conditions

I would like to give everyone an update on the uncompleted work at the new bridge the state installed behind #7 green. When the state was installing the new bridge last fall, they damaged our cart bridge that crossed the creek near the seniors tee We were hoping to have it fixed already, but unfortunately, when dealing with the state, things move at a turtle’s pace. Their proposed time frame for rebuilding the structure was too close to the Wyndham Championship date, and we just cannot take that risk So they have agreed to fix the area up and make it look good for the time being, and then shortly after the tournament, they will commence rebuilding our bridge We gave them a date of June 15 to have it cleaned up and new sod installed. We will keep our fingers crossed that they can get it done before then.

We will be aerifying the greens, tees, and fairways from April 29 to May 6 Considering that the turf made it through the winter well and is healthy, this will allow us to heal from this process in a timely manner and be back to great golfing conditions in just a few short weeks. Please keep in mind that warmer weather means that we will also begin our normal agronomic practices of verti-grooming the greens and lightly sanding them with ultra-fine sand every Monday during our growing season This process is very minimal in disruption but is vital to us being able to provide you with the best possible greens surfaces week in and week out during the season

Come on out and enjoy the prefect golfing weather before the summer heat sets in. Hope to see you around the course.

NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

I am so happy to report that the sewage project that has been taking place here at The Cardinal is almost complete As I am writing this on April 11th, the crew only has one more section of pipe to install, which will run down hole number three Land Innovation is the company that will be doing the restoration work. This is the same company that we had on site to finish up the bunker project in 2022 Their work is scheduled to begin on April 15th, so hopefully by the time you are reading this, the work is well under way and we have lots of fresh sod on the ground. Once the sod is on the ground, it is very important that we keep all cart traffic and play off of these areas. We will let you know the areas that you need to avoid on a daily basis I am hopeful that by the time we get into June, this is all in the past and the course will be back to normal

If you have been out to The Cardinal this spring, you have noticed that we are greening up nicely with no major winter damage This is a welcome sight after all the sod work we had to do last year I believe we will have a few small collar areas that will need to be sodded, but that is a very common problem when you have cool-season greens like our bent grass greens and warm-season collars like our bermuda grass collars Throughout the summer, we spray PGR’s (Plant Growth Regulators) weekly on greens to help slow the growth of the greens, which helps to maintain more consistent green speeds and plant health. The PGR requirements are very different for bent grass greens vs. bermuda grass collars. Therefore, the collars are being overregulated throughout the year and are weak going into winter, so they take more time to fill in in the spring

am happy with the current condition of e course and once the restoration work complete, I think we are in for a great 024 golf season

How Often Should You Three Putt?

(by Lou Stagner)

One of the most common questions I get looks something like this: "It feels like I am three putting from the 30-foot range more than I should be How often should I three putt from that distance?"

I have asked readers to give feedback on the things they would like to see in the newsletter The number one request is “please give charts broken down by handicap for ‘this’ stat”. Today’s topic on three putting is one that I get a lot of questions about I will keep working my way through several different stats so you can have a reference library of performance by skill level across all parts of the game.

The numbers below from my database are the chances of three putting from a given distance by handicap index.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Thank you for being part of our families and we look forward to seeing you around each club real soon Golf season is finally upon us With all the cooler temperatures and rain over the winter, its nice to see the sun, get outdoors, and enjoy a golf course that is dry and green! With the course coming out of winter, I’d like to give a special shout out to our Superintendent Ross Jernigan and his team for continuing to provide us with a wonderful golf course These past four months have been tough with the sewer project hitting delay after delay. Ross and his team have battled water and silt coming out of the creek all winter but have once again gotten the upper hand and have done a tremendous job cleaning up I’d also like to thank every member who supported the club throughout this entire process. It took a village to get through this winter and we appreciate it By the time this newsletter gets to your inbox or mailbox, we will have had almost half of the cleanup and repairs accomplished with only a little bit left to go As I’ve said in some of the morning emails, the end is near and we are almost back to normal

The first month of our 2024 Golf Season has been quite fun. We held our annual Opening Day event, together we filled more than a thousand divots during our first Divot Party, and once again had a blast turning the back 9 into a Par 3 Course for the Master’s Par 3 Tournament. Our ladies playdays have been well attended with some new faces joining the group, and men’s league on Wednesday evenings has continued to be a big hit as everyone chases the belt at the end of the year. With so many new faces around the club, each event has been wonderful seeing all of the support As we head into May, our events calendar will continue to draw a lot of attention and tons of opportunities for a bit of competition for all players Remember all information regarding the tournament calendar can be found each morning through the morning email, on the website, or on the McConnell Golf App.

For those still trying to knock the rust of your short game, remember these few keys to help get the ball on the green from around the putting surface.

1 If you are just off the green with nothing to go over, use a less lofted club and chip the ball. These will get the ball on the ground quicker, you won’t have to swing as hard, and the ball will stop closer to the hole

2 For shots over a bunker or to an elevate green, use a more lofted club to help you get the ball up and carry it onto the green

3 Setup with your stance slightly open, hands ahead of the clubhead, and remember weight has to be more on your lead leg All three of these factors will help you hit down on the ball, causing the loft on the club to lift the ball up. As soon as your weight falls backwards, or hands move behind the clubhead your destined for more skulled or fat shots around the green

If you need help with your short game or any other part of your game, please see a member of the professional staff at The Cardinal or Sedgefield. Also, beginning in May, we will be providing golf tips through the Cardinal Instagram account so make sure your subscribed

Let’s continue the fun and make 2024 the best year ever at the Cardinal Remember, The Cardinal is open on Monday’s going forward so if you are looking for a place to play on Mondays, look no further
