MEMBERSHIP & COMMUNICATIONS
A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
Another trip around the sun is almost complete, and thankfully, the election commercials are over! It is time to focus on the end of the year and the holidays, which to me is all about family.
When I think about family, I obviously think about those under my roof that are my responsibility, and then my extended family After that I go to the “village” around me I helped coach my eight-year-old son’s football team this year, and with two-hour practices three nights a week since the end of July, those kids and other coaches have been my “football family” for the past few months.
Another family I refer to often is the Sedgefield family. In my almost thirteen years at Sedgefield, the camaraderie amongst the membership and also the staff is a great testament to what it means to be a part of a family Throughout the highs and lows of life I see daily examples through our membership of how everyone helps and supports one another Through charity events hosted at the club, annual events that are a staple of many households, and even birthdays and weddings, the Sedgefield family remains strong and supportive throughout the year I even discuss how great the bond is amongst the membership when speaking with someone interested in joining the club. No one wants to join a club that is not inclusive. Most people join clubs so they are a part of something, and that is where Sedgefield shines
I appreciate all that our membership does with the referral of new members and being so welcoming to all that have joined lately The “family” vibe the club resonates is one of the beacons that draws many members toward us I appreciate each and every one of you and wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season!
I look forward to seeing you and your guests around the club

A NOTE FROM YOUR COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
It has been great to get to meet so many of you over the last few months since I began my career here with the team at Sedgefield. Everyone on both the staff and within the membership has been super welcoming and accommodating, and I have really enjoyed my time here so far!
In my short time here, we’ve already hosted the Wyndham Championship and our Fall Men’s Member-Guest, both of which were huge hits and successful events despite inclement weather impacting each tournament
While the golf season may be coming to a close, I look forward to seeing many of you around the club during some of our holiday events such as our Thanksgiving Feast, our Santa Breakfast and Brunch, Holiday Soiree and more!
This is always my favorite time of the year for many reasons, the weather is nice and cool, football season is running strong with basketball season right around the corner, and most importantly, the time spent with friends and family is irreplaceable
There are lots of activities planned for the next few weeks, so I look forward to seeing you at those as well. You will not want to miss our November Bourbon Dinner or either of our Grape Nuts outings as the year comes to a close Additionally, Music Bingo was a huge hit earlier this year, and if you’re looking for a fun, casual outing, that’s the one for you!
As stated earlier, it’s been great getting to meet so many of you and I look forward to getting to know you even closer as the calendar turns to 2025!
I look forward to seeing you around the clubs and let me know what I can do to help you if needed

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
I hope everyone has been enjoying these really nice fall days and dry weather October was a very dry month in which we only received 15” of rain for the entire month We also experienced several consecutive days in the middle of October that brought us low enough temperatures that produced our seasons first frost. Much of the turf on the course has begun to lose its green color and this will become more evident once we have some colder mornings that produce a heavier frost As we approach the winter months with colder mornings, this is the time of year that when frosty conditions are present we will enforce a delayed start for play to protect the health of the turf. Please check with the golf shop on these cold mornings to stay updated with possible frost delays
This is the time of year we refer to as “leaf season” and our main focus will be to keep the course clean from leaves using large blowers and vacuums. Some days are easier than others at keeping the course clean depending on how windy it is, so please be understanding that some days the course may not be as clean as our typical standards
We are also approaching the time of year that the turf on the greens will shut down and cease growing for the year. It will not grow and recover from old hole locations like it does when its actively growing Therefore we will start to use white plastic inserts inside the cups where we typically use white paint These plastic inserts help to protect the edge of the cup from any damage and on days when rounds of golf are minimal, we will use the same hole locations the next day. Using this method through-out the winter months will minimize the amount of old cup marks while the turf isn’t growing and healing itself Once the turf begins actively growing again next year, we will convert back to using paint
This is still a great time of year to get out and enjoy some good conditions and nice golfing weather before we really get into the much colder weather in January and February Get out and have some fun and I hope to see you out on the course
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent
I hope you have been able to come out and enjoy the course this fall. Other than the week of Hurricane Helene, we have had beautiful weather this fall allowing us to provide good playing conditions I am hoping that this great weather continues into the winter as we have a few projects I am looking forward to completing.
The biggest project we will be working on this winter is improving the growing environment of the 7th tee We plan to remove all the trees between the 6th green and the 7th tee that are below the gravel walk path to the 7th tee. Once all the trees are removed we will grind all the stumps, and grade the area smooth We will then sod this area up to the gravel walk path This will be a big change to this area, but will allow much more sunlight to the top two tee boxes We plan to sod the top tee as well, but we will wait until the spring to do so.
As we look forward to the coming months, one thing we will focus on is keeping the course as clean as possible on a daily basis Leaves are already starting to fall at a very fast pace, which we are able to clean up quickly when it’s dry. However, when we go through wet stretches, it can be difficult to get our equipment onto the course for daily leaf removal Please be patient with us as we will be working hard every day to keep the course clean, but also minimize any damage to the turf from our equipment
I am looking forward to starting these projects this winter and setting us up for an even better 2025 golf season Hopefully there are many warm sunny days this winter for us to get lots of work done and for you to be able come out and enjoy the club
Ross Jernigan Golf Course Superintendent

FERG’S FIXES
The Realities of Winter Golf: 5 Things Every Golfer Should Know
Winter is a reality that all golfers have to face. Colder weather and shorter days have a big impact on playing conditions and course management no matter where you’re located In colder parts of the U S , golfers may only get a few chances to play their local courses during winter because of snow cover or extremely cold temperatures. But even in warm areas, where winter is prime golf season, courses still require special care to avoid damage during winter Here are five realities of winter golf we should all be aware of:
1 Grass is growing slower, if at all
In colder climates, grass is either barely growing or fully dormant during winter This means a golf course can’t recover from traffic, divots, ball marks or any other wear and tear that happens during winter rounds Even in places with warm winter weather, the days are still shorter and cooler, which means grass isn’t growing and recovering like it would during other seasons If a course gets heavy winter play, damage can add up quickly.
2. Damage will linger.
Any wear and tear that does occur during winter can linger well into spring and relatively few rounds can still leave lasting scars when grass is growing slowly Worn areas from cart traffic and accumulating divots are both good examples of damage from winter play that tends to hang around. This is why many courses are extremely protective of the primary playing areas during winter Temporary greens, cart restrictions and other winter policies are all used to limit the amount of damage that needs to be repaired in the spring.
3. There will be restrictions.
Almost anywhere in the U.S., winter golf comes with some restrictions that are necessary to protect the course. Frost delays are a common headache for winter golfers, even in places where winter is the prime playing season Cart restrictions are also common Some sensitive playing areas, like greens or low-lying fairways, may be closed for part or all of the winter because the risk of damage is simply too high
4. One warm day doesn’t mean that it’s spring.
Golfers in cooler climates are understandably excited when a warm stretch appears in the middle of winter, and courses can be packed on a warm winter day. However, it’s important to remember that a break in the cold doesn’t mean everything is back to normal In fact, a warm day or two during winter can leave a course even more vulnerable to damage as frozen soils thaw and refreeze.
5. It’s a balancing act.
Winter play is never easy to manage Courses in warmer areas have to balance the demand for golf with limited turf recovery and the risk of poor playing conditions in the spring In colder areas, courses have to decide whether letting a few die-hard winter golfers out to play is worth the potential damage they might do. Every course has to find their own answers for managing winter play, but golfers everywhere can make it easier by understanding the realities of the season Unfortunately, the golfer’s dream of an endless summer is pretty hard to come by.

How Much Damage Frost Really Causes a Golf Course (and your yard), According to a Golf-Course Superintendent
By: Rick Tegtmeier
Neither rain nor heat nor gloomy looks from disapproving spouses can keep avid golfers from their appointed rounds. But frost! Frost will do it. When it forms on courses, it often means delays But what’s the deal with frost? When and where is it most likely to appear? What problems does it pose? How do superintendents deal with it? And what, if anything, should homeowners do about it in their yards?
1. It doesn’t have to be freezing for frost to form Frost typically forms on turf over the course of chilly nights when the grass itself gets colder than the surrounding air. Any number of factors help create those conditions. Plain old temperature, of course, but also dew points, wind speeds, humidity and cloud cover And then there’s the biggie: Wet Bulb temperature, which, as Tegtmeier puts it, “is the temperature air cools to when you add water to the equation.” You know how the air feels colder when you lick your finger and hold it out? Same thing happens when grass gets wet The surface temperature of the plant drops to the Wet Bulb temperature. If it drops low enough, frost can form (all the more likely in shaded or lower-lying areas of the course), even if the air temperature hasn’t plunged below 32F
2. It’s always coldest before the dawn
That poetic-sounding saying is grounded in scientific fact When the sun goes down, the earth starts cooling off and continues doing so until the sun comes up again. Tegtmeier and his crew are mindful of this when they head out on their pre-dawn maintenance shifts, knowing that the frost-less course they first encounter might become a frosty course while they’re in the middle of their work. “We’ve definitely gotten caught out there by frost,” Tegtmeier says “It’s not there when we get started, but it forms while we’re out there ” When that happens, they’ll turn to other tasks, such as edging cart paths or tending mulch beds, that don’t involve treading or riding over frosty turf
3. The clearer the night, the frostier the dawn
You’ve probably noticed that frost delays are more common after clear, crisp nights That’s because clouds trap heat, warming the atmosphere If it’s overcast at night, you’ve got a better chance of being in the clear for your early morning tee time. If, on the other hand, the air is crisp and you can see the stars, don’t be shocked if you’re delayed by frost on your course at dawn
4. What’s the damage?
That depends on a range of factors, including the varietal of turf, the health of the grass, the severity of the frost and amount of activity the frosty turf endures. But here’s the gist: When grass gets frosted over, the water in its plant cells can freeze and expand. If you mow that grass in its frigid state (or trample on it, or ride your cart across it), those icy molecules can shatter That’s not broken glass It’s broken grass That doesn’t mean you’ve killed the turf, which, in most cases, will recover. But you can see the impact soon after in discoloration “I don’t want to say it’s just an aesthetic issue, because you can obviously do some structural damage to the plant,” Tegtmeier says. “But most often the impact is visual ” That impact is more readily apparent in the longer grass of the rough, Tegtmeier says It’s also more obvious when the damage is caused in early season frosts, in, say, late September or October, when the grass is still succulent and growing, and the discrepancy between healthy and unhealthy turf is clearer It’s much less apparent later in the season, when the turf has started going dormant.
As a general rule, Tegtmeier says, if there’s frost on the ground at Des Moines Country Club, golfers are not allowed on the course “Of course, if it’s just a tiny patch in the shade of a tree somewhere, we’ll just ask the golfers not to drive or walk through it,” Tegtmeier says “We try to let common sense prevail ”
But many other courses are looser with the rules, allowing golfers out in frosty conditions, most likely because they need the greens fees “The operator might just decide, I’d rather deal with the frost damage than lose the revenue,” Tegtmeier says
5. How to deal with frost at home
Back in the good old days, when print was king, Tegtmeier could tell from the discolored footprints in his neighbors’ yards that the newspaper boy or girl had trampled on the grass when it was frosty Not the end of the world. But if it’s not something you want, you could employ a superintendent’s trick and spray your lawn lightly with a hose Maintenance crews sometimes do that to get frost off a green, Tegtmeier says. But for a homeowner, he adds, that’s pretty much just a waste of water “It’s not like you need to use your lawn for revenue,” he says “You’re better off doing what most of us do at the golf course and just wait for the sun to come up and the frost to melt away.”
TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Fast and Furious
Wow, hard to believe we are only two months away from turning the calendar to 2025. However, before we think of next year we need to reflect on the Fast and Furious months of September and October, plus look ahead and what is still to come at the Cardinal
The past two months were packed with a lot of memories, so we’d like to remember and definitely some we’d like to forget As the greens began to heal and the weather started to cool off from the summer, the activity around the golf course was just heating up We hosted our Men’s League Shootout and our one-day Summer Shootout Both of these events were exciting and lead to some incredible action. In our Men’s League Shootout, we saw a new winner take the belt home this year with Paul Sutherland outlasting the field to become this year’s champion He has the belt to prove it. The Summer Shootout was packed with action. Not only is everyone playing with no handicap, but also have to beat the other teams in their flight just to make it to the Shootout portion of the event After 18 holes of stroke play, and three holes of alternate shot elimination play, Rob Beasley and Tod Dauler rose above the rest to be crown 2024 Summer Shootout Champions
The first three weeks of September were great, the last week of September was not great Close to nine inches of rain and multiple floods proved too much for the course we saw a few days of closures Ross Jernigan and his team got to work and somehow created a course that seem to have risen from the ashes and shined like none other We headed into October with two major events stare us right between the eyes We started the month with our men’s member/guest, Dye Cup, which turned out to be a huge success. 72 players, perfect weather, incredible food, and a golf course that blew everyone away, how could anything go wrong The team of Sean Stevens and Matt McAnally endured five rounds of match play, and then withstood the gauntlet of the shootout to become this year’s champions. Our second major proved to be a test of will for all competitors who teed it up During our Championship Weekend, we proved the Cardinal still could hold its own against some of our finest players. Defending Ladies Club Champion Cindi Nuckols, decided she wanted to hold on to the title one more year In the Legends Men’s Division, Geoff Beaston played a wonderful round of golf on Sunday to secure the trophy. Tom Truxton battled Brooks Barwick for the Senior Club Championship title and proved just a little too tough for the Iron King to overcome Mr Truxton grabbed his first title and I think this could be one of many more for him. After three days of incredible action, a real battle ensued between three players coming down the stretch In a hard fought with the other competitors and the course, Rocky Manning kissed the trophy and was named Men’s Club Champion. This year resented a new tradition here at the Cardinal, as we introduced the Gregg Cox Championship Trophy to be present to the Club Champion going forward This trophy is named in the honor of Mr Cox and his incredible run of championships, winning 11 Club Championships during his career Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to everyone who supported us this year and the last two months
We still have a couple fun events on the calendar as we round out the year This year’s Turkey Trot will be played on Sunday, November 24th This year we will use this event to help raise funds and toys for the Salvation Army’s Toys for Tots Campaign Get your team ready for the “Fifth Major” of the year and lets support this wonderful organization
The last event on the calendar will be our Santa Scramble, held Saturday, December 21st We always have a great time with this event so let’s keep the fun going and enjoy one last trip around the course before we all get too busy with the holiday All tournament details can be found on the Cardinal Tournament Directory page at the bottom of the McConnell Golf App.
Thank you all for a wonderful year I never thought we would make it out from the course project in the beginning of the year, but Ross and his team did what they have always done, worked hard and gave us the best golf course in North Carolina. Enjoy the upcoming holiday season. We wish you all the best for the coming season and the new year

IT IS FLU SEASON AGAIN!
You should stay out of the gym when you're sick if you have symptoms below the neck, such as a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or a productive cough These symptoms indicate that your body is fighting an infection and needs rest Exercising while you have these symptoms can make you sicker.
If you have a cold or other mild symptoms like sniffles or sneezing, you might be able to exercise, but you should listen to your body and only do as much as you feel comfortable. You can try reducing the intensity and length of your workout, and switching to low-intensity activities like walking, swimming, biking, or yoga You should also avoid highintensity interval training, endurance or distance running, sprinting, or power work
If you do decide to exercise while sick, you should make sure to stay hydrated and be mindful of spreading germs to others.
