A NOTE FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER

In just a few short weeks, I will be celebrating my first full year here at Sedgefield and the Cardinal. I was here for the final rounds at the Wyndham last year but was a spectator in the McConnell sky boxes There is huge difference from enjoying this amazing event and with my “boots on the ground” working the event.

This last year has been filled with rewarding moments and exciting new challenges as we start to navigate this new chapter in these clubs’ history. In my time here, I have come to learn that our members are a vibrant community of fun-loving people The McConnell family has provided me with the support and latitude to grow my leadership team and find new ways to bring exciting options to the club to improve the member experience I want to specially thank our Department Managers (Angela Ayers, Chad Cromer, Chad Flowers, Chris Terry, Eric Ferguson, Evan Morris, Maya Panayotova, Pierce Hoover, Ross Jernigan, Sherri Tallant, Taylor Amos, Travis Huddleston, Will Harper) for jumping on board with this culture change and working tirelessly to execute the vision I couldn’t have asked for better club members or team members. Also, thank you to Beverly Marler for her recruitment and set up for success and my wife Amy, the light of my life, who allows me to be here most nights, weekends and holidays.

Our maintenance team worked hand in hand with our food and beverage team as they spent some time updating the pool complex with furniture, fixtures and improved style of service, which has brought poolside dining to a whole new level this year I have heard fantastic feedback from all of you and hope that this has been one of the best summers to date. While I have yet to go down the slide, I hear it is always a highlight at the pool. One of the biggest changes we have made in the last year is the number of team members I am a firm believer in providing our memberships with the right level of service, which cannot be done without the right number of team members At this time, we have added a half dozen positions to provide the membership with the service, recognition, and smiling faces that help your club feel like home. I hope you have taken the time to get to know some of the new faces you have seen around the property

Ross continues to replace winter kill at the Cardinal, sodding areas all over the golf course Weather continues to be his friend and this Bermuda grass has really filled in over the last few months Pete's Place has been renovated, open this summer, and is used as a turn house with beverages, sandwiches, hot dogs and snacks Dye's Tavern will continue to be open for your ala carte meals Please remember, do NOT bring your own food and beverage items You have asked for these areas to be available, let's keep them active and purchase from the clubhouse.

Cleanup and structure removal continue every day at Sedgefield Please be patient as we continue to return your course and grounds to (member friendly) championship condition

Kristen works part time for her family’s turf management business They have a 12 year old daughter, Isla who is a rising 7th grader at Greensboro Montessori School. Michael & Elizabeth Byers

The Byers recently relocated back to the triad area after living in Burlington for many years. In 2008 they moved to Southport, NC and were members at St. James Plantation where they enjoyed 4 and half golf courses, 3 health clubs, restaurants and a beach club on Oak Island

They averaged 4 rounds of golf a week while living at St James and also enjoyed fishing while living at the coast. Please join us in welcoming the Byers to the club!

Brian and Lizzie gladly call Greensboro their home but the two are far from native Lizzie, who hails from the Bay Area of California, works as the head high school Counselor at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville. Brian, or “Hags” as most affectionately know him, grew up in a small New Jersey beach town and works in supply chain as a Senior Sales Executive for C H Robinson They enjoy spending time with friends and family, boating on Belews Lake, and attending as many concerts as possible Lizzie is excited to use the pool, fitness center, and attend social events Brian is excited to (hopefully) take a few strokes off his game and make new friendships at the club. If you see them, feel free to introduce yourself and ask about this year’s van trip around the country spent golfing and following the Dead on tour

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Another rewarding Wyndham Championship has passed, and while still warm outside, the crisp coolness of fall is merely weeks away. College football, colorful leaves and more comfortable rounds of golf are on the horizon Fall is my favorite time of year as the kids are back in school and life seems to have more structure with less of the summer hustle & bustle Then the holidays will be here before we know it!

Before the holidays arrive and winter sets in, have you considered inviting a friend, neighbor or colleague out to the club as prospective member? Our membership continues to move in the right direction and with your continued assistance we will continue to grow the Sedgefield family!

I remain available to send membership information on your behalf and to meet with all prospective members you send our way. The weather is perfect this time of year, and there has truly never been a better time to be a member at Segdefield

I look forward to receiving your referrals for continued membership growth and to seeing you and your guests around the clubs!

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

Currently the turf throughout the property is doing very well as we head into the fall season The tournament structures should be mostly gone if not completely gone by the time you are reading this and we will begin repairing any damaged areas with new sod in the coming weeks As we get closer to the end of September we will begin the process of raising our mowing heights and preparing them for the cooler weather ahead This is a very vital part of our agronomic plan that allows the bermuda plants to be as healthy as possible before they go dormant. It also allows for some added leaf tissue so it can better sustain the cart and foot traffic during the winter while it’s not actively growing and able to recover

Looking forward we will continue to perform our light topdressings on the greens through the month of September and on October 2nd we will be using small needle tines on the greens to help ensure that the greens are going into winter as healthy as possible This process causes very minimal disruption to the surface and the ball roll is typically back to normal a couple of days after the process.

As the end of summer is just around the corner, with that comes cooler crisp mornings that make for some great golfing weather! I hope to see you out on the course taking advantage of the weather and good golfing conditions

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

Fall is almost here and it is my favorite time of year, on and off the course We have football starting back up, family time around the outside fire pit, and cooler weather to enjoy being on the golf course. Not only is it more comfortable for us all to enjoy being outside and on the course, but it’s a welcome change for our Bentgrass greens The cooler weather allows us to provide a firmer and faster putting surface without the worry of stress on our greens.

As we head into fall it is nice to see the course conditions returning to normal here at the Cardinal While the greens have been in great shape all year it has taken most of the summer to sod/grow in from the winter damage the course received. The maintenance team has installed around 50,000 square feet of sod this summer. We chose Tahoma 31 Bermuda grass to put back in the damaged areas Tahoma 31 is one of the best new Bermuda grasses and is known for its cold weather tolerance We are very hopeful that with a better turf grass along and some tree removal that we will have very little damage in this areas in the future.

I would like to make you aware of a few things that you may notice as we head into fall and start preparing the course for winter As we get into September, we will start to raise the height of cut on tees, fairways, and green surrounds. This is done to make sure we have enough material on these surfaces to handle all of the winter traffic Raising the height of cut on all short-cut areas also helps to insulate from cold temperatures in the winter which can help to prevent winter kill Also, at the beginning of September we will be putting out a fall fertility application on all short-cut and high traffic areas to ensure that these areas go into dormancy as healthy as possible

I hope that you are able to come out and enjoy lots of great golf this fall and in hopefully some great fall weather I look forward to seeing you on the course

See you on the course!

I hope everyone is enjoying these last few weeks of summer. Temperatures really started to heat up once we got into the month of July and it has stayed hot and humid for the most part Did you enjoy the Wyndham Championship? We certainly did and couldn’t be happier in our champion Lucas Glover He is one of the nicest and soft spoken guys you will ever meet One fact that was not mentioned was his uncle was a member here at Sedgefield and Lucas would come up and spend time with him and work on his game as a junior.

We still have several events left on our golf schedule and hope you will plan to join us for these remaining events If you are struggling with you game, please let us help you with some individual instruction.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Almost home, but still a ways to go!

As I write this, I’m thinking about just how fast time as flown by, getting us to September. Hard to believe we are over two-thirds of the year down. With that said, we still have a busy few months upcoming at The Cardinal so don’t forget to check out the schedule of events and get them on your calendar. But first, let’s recap a bit of what happened around the golfmosphere the past two months at the club

1. Operation36 mini summer schools continued to prove exciting as more juniors crushed goals and conquered yardages throughout the summer. Seven juniors made back at least one new yardage this summer, with three juniors crushing shorter yardages and moving back multiple levels Awesome seeing these young men and ladies enjoy the game with no fear and just allowing their skills to progress naturally Some advice we all can take and use Don’t force it Use games to make your practice fun More practice, more success!

2 A handful of members and myself made a trip to Ireland for a bit of golf earlier this year. The weather was definitely a factor this time. Windy conditions persisted all week, and we did have a couple days of wet weather Courses were beautiful but the golf was still hard One thing that makes a long wet, windy day on the course better is the Guinness after the round with your friends! You go once, you’ll go 10 more times! Worth the experience

3. Juniors, juniors, juniors….with four state wide junior events over the last two months, we were able to get a glimpse of the future of the game in NC One event that was special to us here at the club was the CPGA PGA Junior Championship. This event brought in some of the best junior girls from around the state, offering a couple the chance to make a trip to Arkansas to participate in the National PGA Junior Championship Our very own Leah Edwards, with her great play during the week, earned her a spot in the national championship The trip to Arkansas marks the third national event Leah participated in this summer; USGA Women’s 4-Ball, First Tee National Championship, and The PGA Junior Girls Championship

4 Last but not least, we hosted a new event this summer; The Summer Shootout. Twenty two-man teams participated in an eighteen gross play event in the morning, with ten teams advancing to the nine-hole shootout in the afternoon After all was said and done, two seasoned veterans outlasted all the young guns. Congratulations to Brooks Barwick and Larry DeMoss for playing great in the morning, surviving and advancing through the shootout to bring home the title of Summer Shootout Champions.

Like I mentioned earlier, just because we are in the home stretch of the year doesn’t mean we are done with event for the remainder of the year Take a look at these upcoming events and get ready for a fun fall.
