A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

The fairways and trees remain full of life and color as the days shorten and the evenings get just a little crisp and cooler. The kids are back in school and life just seems to be a little more relaxed with a busy summer season replaced by routines that were lost for the past couple of months. Fall is my absolute favorite time of year, especially around the clubs! Warm sunshine still fills the air without the harshness of the stubborn summer humidity, making an afternoon round of golf or game of pickleball a delightful escape from our busy realities if just for a few hours

Locally here at Sedgefield, we are off of the heels of another eventful and successful Wyndham Championship, even if we did have our first official Monday finish in more than a decade. Each year I am amazed by the sheer amount of hours and hard work our staff puts in. From the guys and gals in the kitchen to the folks squeegeeing the golf course at 3:00 am after torrential downpours, and everyone in between, pulling off a tournament of this magnitude is an amazing feat that is executed with skill and grace, like clockwork Great job to all who helped make our club shine on the international spotlight!

From a membership perspective, we have had another great year at Sedgefield, adding many new families and faces to the club family. None of our success would be possible without the referrals from our members. There is no better gift than sharing the camaraderie and enjoyment of club membership with family and friends A huge “thank you” to everyone for your continued support, as the healthiest clubs grow from within through referrals

As we enter the last full season of 2024, there are plenty of activities and exciting events remaining on the club calendar. There is still time to bring that friend or co-worker out for a round of golf or an elegant dinner to experience all that Sedgefield has to offer. Please do not hesitate to send anyone to me that may be interested and I will reach out on your behalf!

Congratulations to Old North State Club on winning the 12th Annual McConnell Golf Solheim Cup! MCCONNELL GOLF RYDER CUP I NOVEMBER 6-9

Sedgefield Country Club aims to defend its Ryder Cup title at this year's event, held at The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, from November 6th through the 9th Last year's title marked Sedgefield Country Club's first Ryder Cup victory, with The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation and the Country Club of Asheville finishing second and third, respectively

OLD NORTH STATE CLUB SOLHEIM

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

I would like to take a moment and give a shout out to our Sedgefield agronomy staff and all our agronomy volunteers for this year’s Wyndham Championship These guys all came together and worked as one big team to make this year’s event a success This is my 21st year doing tournament golf events for the PGA Tour and this year’s event was one of the more challenging tournaments that I can remember My two assistants Tim Stroud and Sam Harris were unbelievable! They stepped up to every challenge Mother Nature threw our way It was truly amazing and awesome to see what our team that week accomplished and overcame. They all represented Sedgefield and McConnell Golf very well and I could not be more proud of all of them!

Currently the turf throughout the property is doing very well as we head into the fall season. The tournament structures should be mostly gone if not completely gone by the time you are reading this and we will begin repairing any damaged areas with new sod in the coming weeks As we get closer to the end of September, we will begin the, process of raising our mowing heights and preparing them for the cooler weather ahead This is a very vital part of our agronomic plan that allows the bermuda plants to be as healthy as possible before they go dormant for the winter. It also allows for some added leaf tissue so it can better sustain the cart and foot traffic during the winter while it’s not actively growing and able to recover

Looking forward we will continue to perform our light topdressings on the greens through the month of September and on September 30th we will be using small needle tines on the greens to help ensure that the greens are going into winter as healthy as possible This process causes very minimal disruption to the surface and ball roll is typically back to normal in a couple of days after the process. As the end of summer is just around the corner, with that comes cooler crisp mornings that make for some great golfing weather! I hope to see you out on the course taking advantage of the weather and good golfing conditions.

Fall is almost here and it is my favorite time of year on and off the course We have football starting back up, family time around the outside fire pit, and cooler weather to enjoy being on the golf course Not only is it more comfortable for us all to enjoy being outside and on the course, but it’s a welcome change for our Bentgrass greens. The cooler weather allows us to provide a firmer and faster putting surface without the worry of stress on our greens

I know we were all so glad to see the sewage project come to an end, and all the damaged areas repaired. Some of the sod that was installed on 14 came from the sod farm very damaged and has required lots of additional water and fertility We have sent off soil samples to be tested and talked over the results with professors at NC State’s turf program about the best course of treatment for this area. We have already begun with their recommendation and will continue to do so for the remainder of the growing season We are hopeful the once it comes out of dormancy next spring we will be able to grow it in quickly

I would like to make you aware of a few things that you may notice as we head into fall and start preparing the course for winter. As we get into September, we will start to raise the height of cut on tees, fairways, and green surrounds This is done to make sure we have enough material on these surfaces to handle all of the winter traffic Raising the height of cut on all short-cut areas also helps to insulate from cold temperatures in the winter which can help to prevent winter kill. Also, at the beginning of September we will be putting out a fall fertility application on all short-cut and high traffic areas to ensure that these areas go into dormancy as healthy as possible

I hope that you are able to come out and enjoy lots of great golf this fall and hopefully some great fall weather Look forward to seeing you on the course

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

It is hard to believe summer has almost officially come to an end. School has already started for the majority of our families and my family as well What a crazy last few months of weather we have had We went from no rain in June at the beginning of summer to massive amounts of rain in middle to late July and into early August Did you make it out to the Wyndham Championship? After dealing with all of this wet weather, and a tropical depression, we somehow managed to crown a champion on Sunday night Aaron Rai of England captured his first PGA Tour victory in dramatic fashion

The golf season at Sedgefield typically takes a back seat to College Football Fall in North Carolina can produce some of the best weather to play golf we see all year We still have several events left on the golf calendar and hope you will plan to join us for these events. Please be on the look out for Fall Fittings Days along with instructional programs to help fine tune your game

I look forward to seeing you at the club!

All the Best, Eric Ferguson Director of Golf

FERG’S FIXES

BirdiesandDoublesperRound (byLouStagner)

One of the most common questions I get goes something like this.

“Hey Lou, I made 2 birdies today and I am a 12 handicap Is that good?”

“Hey Lou, I made 3 doubles today and I am a 9 handicap Is that bad?”

The chart below shows the average birdies and doubles+ per round by handicap index

Please notice how the dashed red line (average birdies per round) does not have a lot of change as you go from scratch players on the left, to 20 index players on the right 20 index players average 1 9 less birdies per round than a scratch player but….

The solid black line (average doubles+ per round) has a significant amount of change as you go from scratch to 20 index. 20 index players average 5.6 more doubles per round than a scratch player.

My Thoughts

I have said this so many times, but the key to getting better is NOT via more birdies, it’s less of the big numbers To drive this home even further:

Percent of rounds where ZERO doubles or worse were made:

· Scratch: 50 0%

· 5 Index: 22.9%

10 Index: 6.5%

15 Index: 1 3%

· 20 Index: 0 2%

A scratch player makes zero doubles (or worse) in one out of every two rounds they play

A 20 index makes zero doubles (or worse) in one out of every 500 rounds they play!!!

13-15

Limit the big numbers and watch your handicap drop!

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

With the summer season almost over, I wanted to say thank you to every member who has allowed our team here at the Cardinal to be a part of your golf passion You stuck with us during a very tough time This year started off a little rough with a longer than expected project on the course. At times none of us ever thought it would finish However, all the pipes, holes, bulldozers, and manholes were removed, filled and fixed and our golf course started to take shape. Ross and his team did an amazing job giving us a product that made us wonder if the prior 4 months of disruption ever happened What an amazing turnaround from the beginning of the season Our family continues to grow. The club has grown by over 20 members so far this season and we are so happy you chose the Cardinal to be a part of your family Many of the new players have been very active so far, getting to know each other and playing in our Wednesday Night Men’s League to get involved in the club We’ve seen the junior program really grow It’s great to see these young stars out playing the course together, hitting balls on the driving range, and just enjoying the club life. It’s extremely fun to watch them have fun with the game. The club is in a really good place and will continue to thrive with as our membership continues to grow The Cardinal right now is like a young person Fun to watch it grow!

THE SIX BEST BASIC STRETCHES

Stretching is an important part of all pre- and post-workout routines. It is a critical part of recovering and helps prepare the body for upcoming physical activity. Lower extremity stretching has been shown to help improve balance In addition to improved balance and coordination, stretching is known to prevent injury, pain, and muscle damage You can benefit from incorporating stretches into your daily life with regular exercise

Check out these six effective stretches to maintain health, balance, and flexibility.

1. Standing Quadriceps Stretch

Stand tall with a neutral spine and feet shoulder-width apart Raise your left leg behind your body by bending your knee Grab your ankle or foot and bring your leg all the way to your glute. Pull your left knee back until it is even with your right knee. Hold for 15-30 seconds and repeat on the right leg

Benefits: Stretches the quadriceps and hip flexors. These muscles become extremely tight from excessive sitting.

2. Lying Knee Hugs

Lie flat on your back with your legs straight out in front of you. Lift your left knee towards your chest, as far as you can. Grab the top of your left leg and pull closer to your chest Hold for 15-30 seconds on each leg

Benefits: Stretches the hips, lower back, and hamstrings.

3 Hamstring Stretch

Begin with both legs straight and your feet almost together. Allow your upper body to fold down as you reach both hands towards your toes. Reach as far as you can with a minimal bend at your knees. Hold for 1530 seconds

Benefits: Stretches the hamstrings and calves.

4 Calf Stretch

Lightly push against a wall for support as you stand with your right leg in front of you. With a slight bend in your right leg, keep your left leg behind you completely straight Press your left heel into the ground as you push against the wall Hold for 15-30 seconds then switch legs

Benefits: Stretches the calves.

5. Overhead Reach

2024 POOL SEASON

This year’s pool season was the best one yet, filled with great weather, stories and memories It was great seeing so many of you at the pool throughout the season and supporting the SCC Fins at each of their meets We had lots of great events over the course of the summer such as our July 4th Celebration, Back to School Bash, and Labor Day Party Our team is already working on ways to elevate and enhance your experience at the pool in 2025, and we’re already counting down the days until we reopen next summer!

GOLOB TAKES GOLD

The Fins’ Haydn Golob took home first place in the 8U Girls 25-meter freestyle event in July at the CSA Greensboro City Meet. Haydn finished first out of 66 swimmers in freestyle, and finished on the podium in third place in the 25-meter backstroke race
