A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR The Wyndham Championship returns to Sedgefield Country Club August 13 - 16 and we have exciting news for you! The tournament has been approved for a limited number of spectators and Sedgefield Country Club and McConnell Golf members will be part of the action! We will enjoy the same viewing areas on the course as in past years on holes 15, 17 and 18 plus we will return to the ballroom and Slammin' Sammy's for food, spirits, and a place to cool off from the summer heat. Safety will remain a top priority with social distancing and limited capacities in all locations. You can expect a scenario similar to that under which we are currently operating at the club. Each venue will have a maximum occupancy of 50% and we will manage entrance under a one in; one out system once they reach capacity as members are roaming the course from one spot to the next. Tickets will go on sale soon so watch your emails for additional information and ordering instructions.
Look who’s talking about Sedgefield CC! Please enjoy a few of our favorite social media mentions below–and keep sharing your experiences by tagging us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a chance to be featured in the next newsletter.
Your staff at both properties has been diligent at rolling with the punches throughout the challenging situations that continue to be a large part of our daily lives, both at and away from the club. I have been
proud of their creativity and perseverance and on behalf of the entire team, we certainly appreciate the support of the membership. You have simply been incredible! If I can be of assistance to you in any way, please let me know. I look forward to seeing you around the club! Beverly Marler

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Ricky and Allison Boggess Sons Caleb, Carson, and Collin The Boggess family is new to Greensboro, having relocated to the Triad in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic from Mississippi. While in Mississippi, they were members of Olive Branch Country Club. Although things have been anything but normal lately, they have still “met lots of wonderful people quickly” and are enjoying their time at the club thus far. Originally from Charleston, WV, Ricky and Allison met in junior high school. Ricky works in dental operations while Allison is a dyslexia facilitator. “We are looking for a place to make life-long friendships, spend fun quality time as a family, and of course golf,” they said. Please join us in welcoming them to the Sedgefield Family!
The Boggess Family
Steve and Amy Ennis; son Jake The Ennis family resides right around the corner from the club on Mecklenburg Road and they are all very excited to be a part of the Sedgefield family. Steve is VP of Sales for Murrow’s Transfer, Inc., headquartered in Thomasville, NC and the family was referred to membership by sponsoring member Eddie Greene. They are looking forward to enjoying all aspects of the club. Please help us welcome one of our newest families! Jeff and Jude Fiorello Children Jonathon, Joey, Alex Fiorello Dodson and Matt Dodson Jeff and Jude Fiorello recently moved from Jamesford Meadows to the Sedgefield Community. As former club members, they decided to rejoin the club and say that it feels great to be back. Jeff, Jonathon, Joey and Matt enjoy golfing and Jude is getting back into learning how to play golf again. Alex enjoys soaking up the sun at the pool. We are so excited to be spending time with our friends and making new ones as well. Please welcome the Fiorello Family back to membership at Sedgefield. Marty and Heidi Freeman Marty and Heidi Freeman currently live in Grandover but will be relocating to Sedgefield in September. Marty is the Chief Operating Officer with Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc in Thomasville while Heidi works for Holderness Plastic Surgery in Greensboro. They have two children and four grandchildren with whom they enjoy spending quality time. Marty is an avid golfer while Heidi enjoys working out and running. They look forward to playing golf, using the fitness facility and other amenities, and of course, making new friends at the club. Please join us in welcoming the Freemans to McConnell Golf and Sedgefield Country Club.

James and Kelly Gentry James did his college internship with the Wyndham Championship in 2012. Upon graduation from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013, he joined the Wyndham staff as a Sales Representative. Kelly is an Occupational Therapist at Cone Health. They were both born and raised in Greensboro. The couple were married on May 16, 2020, in front of a small gathering of family and friends during the COVID-19 pandemic here in Greensboro with the club catering the reception at the Wyndham house on hole number 10. What more fitting place to begin their journey ahead. James said the celebration was perfect and allowed them to spend quality time with loved ones on their special day. Welcome to the club James and Kelly.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Jonathan Greene Jonathan is the son of club member Eddie Greene and has grown up here at Sedgefield. He currently attends Liberty University and works in Sales and Marketing for Murrow's Transfer. Jonathan is looking forward to meeting more avid golfers in the area and improving his game. We look forward to seeing Jonathan around the club and becoming active within the membership. Welcome to McConnell Golf and Sedgefield. Ray and Natalie Hagemann; children Nolan and Haleighmarie The Hagemanns are one of the newest families at Sedgefield, however, are no strangers to the club, as Natalie’s father is Sedgefield member Bill Richardson. They are very familiar with Sedgefield and the Wyndham, as Mr. Richardson coordinates the volunteers for the tournament, and Ray jokes that they are always automatically “volunteered” and working hard during the annual event! Ray and Natalie met in Raleigh where they both attended NC State University, started their family and just recently moved here 18 months ago. They currently reside in Summerfield, NC. Ray is self-employed in sales while Natalie stays busy with the kids and their athletic adventures. Please join us in welcoming the Hagemann family to Sedgefield!
The Hagemann Family
David and Tina Heaton David is the VP of Corporate Services at Old Dominion Freight Line and enjoys playing golf and following his Iowa Hawkeyes. His wife Tina is a stay-at-home mom and they have 2 daughters, Kristin (32) who lives in Kansas City and Katelyn (21) currently at home. David works with club members David Bates, Chris Brooks, and Barry Craver and has known Director of Golf Rocky Brooks for many years so he is very familiar with Sedgefield. They are excited about meeting new friends and taking advantage of what the club has to offer. Eugene Heldreth Eugene was raised in Greensboro, NC and is currently living in Port Orange, Florida where he owns a Dewatering Contracting business. He has recently been living part time here in Greensboro and loves to play golf any chance he gets. He is looking forward to playing golf when he is in town and getting to meet some of his fellow members. Please welcome Eugene to Sedgefield and McConnell Golf.

Joe and Samantha Horvath; children Joseph and Harper The Horvath family moved from Pittsburgh to Greensboro last summer when Joe joined Reynolds American as Director of Corporate Communications. Living across the street from the 17th tee, they could see the beauty of the course every day. After talking with Travis and Jessica Ball and getting Sedgefield dining takeout with them during the onset of coronavirus, they realized it would be almost criminal not to join. “Everything has been amazing so far, especially given the situation we’re all facing,” said Samantha. “Our kids are trying new things like tennis and golf, Joe is golfing more than he ever has and the pool has been a Godsend. Most importantly, the people – from the members to the staff – have all been first-rate and so welcoming, and we truly appreciate that.” While Pittsburgh will always hold a special place in their hearts, the Horvaths have quickly grown accustomed to sunny days, warmer weather and all the opportunities those things provide to get outside, enjoy the club and make new friends.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Hiroyasu Kawakami Mr. Kawakami is one of the newest members of Sedgefield Country Club as he has recently moved to the area as the CEO of Bonset America Corporation, headquartered locally in Browns Summit. Mr. Kawakami is looking forward to meeting new friends and enjoying golf and everything else Sedgefield and McConnell Golf has to offer! Adam and Houston Satterfield Children Ian, Andrew, and Natalie Adam and Houston have a family that rivals the Brady Bunch. Their four children include: Tate (23) who is self-employed with an entrepreneurial spirit, Ian (22) is an All-American and ACC champion distance runner at NC State, Andrew (15) is a rising Sophomore at Greensboro Day and avid golfer, and Natalie (11) is a rising 6th grader at Greensboro Day and golfs to keep up with all the boys. Adam and Houston both love to travel, but Mom especially enjoys chasing Ian around the country to watch him run. Houston runs their home while also managing the kids’ crazy schedules. Adam is a big NC State fan - which means he has to be humble - and also the Chief Financial Officer at Old Dominion Freight Line. They made the decision to join Sedgefield primarily to play golf and socialize with their friends from OD, but they are also looking forward to enjoying the club and meeting new friends. Alex Smalley Raised in Wake Forest, NC, Alex relocated to Greensboro with his family in 2017. After a record-breaking golf career and being named a two-time All-America selection and two-time All-America Scholar, Alex graduated from Duke University in 2019 with a degree in Environmental Science and was named the men’s golf Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year. After competing on the victorious 2019 U.S. Walker Cup Team last fall, he turned professional and earned his PGA Tour Canada card earlier this year. He has dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour since he was 10 years old and is excited to begin his journey to realize his childhood dream. He looks forward to spending time practicing and playing at the Club in between professional events and meeting his fellow members. Help us welcome Alex to the Sedgefield Family. Jeff and Sara Taylor The Taylors are natives of the Triad and live in Kernersville. Jeff is a CPA and Financial Consultant. He is active in foundation work and is the President of the Kernersville Foundation and Treasurer of the Pope Foundation. Jeff and Sara love spending time with their young adult sons Jim and Will, who are both golfers. Jim is married to Zayda and they reside in Nashville, TN where he works in the music industry. Will is a CPA with Grant Thornton in Charlotte. He’s engaged to Kendall Barkley and they are due to be married in November of this year. Club member Jim Babcock encouraged Jeff and Sara to join. The Taylors look forward to getting to know their fellow members.

MEMBERSHIP WELCOME NEW CARDINAL MEMBERS A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR All I can say is WOW! What an incredible roller coaster these past few months. With uncertainty abound regarding almost everything to do with our daily routines, not to mention the socio-economic impact the COVID19 related shutdowns have caused, it was hard to predict what this summer would look like just a few months back. Even though things are continuing to change in our world as we know it on a daily basis, one thing is for sure; Sedgefield Country Club is the place to be!
The Blanchard Family Rhett Blanchard; children Avery, Ethan and Ansley The Blanchards recently moved to Greensboro from Summerfield. Rhett is originally from Atlanta and played football at Wake Forest University. He is the General Manager of Flow Auto Center in Greensboro and has worked in the auto industry for 30 years. His oldest daughter Avery is a Sophomore at Columbia University in New York City studying computer science after a long and successful career in modeling. Ethan Blanchard is a Third Class Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy where he is a pitcher for the baseball team and is studying cyber security. Ansley is a Senior at Northwest Guilford and wants to pursue a career in the medical field. Rhett and Ethan plan to play as much golf as possible during this summer while he is home, trying to make the best of the situation before he returns to college. In the off season, we all enjoy watching baseball, bird hunting, and travel. Wayne Lee and Sally Kim; son James The Lee family has recently joined the Cardinal and they are looking forward to playing many rounds of golf and enjoying the club. The family resides in Summerfield and Mr. Lee works as a Marketing Manager with Qorvo. Please join us in welcoming the Lee family to the membership!
We have remained very fortunate to remain as open and operational as possible through these trying times. I am in admiration of our club and company management and staff for their pro-activeness in preparing the clubs to remain operational and safe when many other businesses were forced to shut down. I tend to stay away from the operational side of things and leave that to the professionals, and these professionals have delivered an amazing product that has helped my job tremendously over the past few months. In over 18 years of being in the private club membership industry, I can say without a doubt that June 2020 was the busiest one-month I have ever had. And I was not alone – new member applicants have practically been lining up at many other McConnell Golf properties as well to get in on the action. Apparently, “The Best Private Club Value From the Mountains to the Coast!” is not that much of a secret any longer. We hope you have enjoyed reading through the biographical profiles of our new members from the past few months. Many are former members returning to Sedgefield, many are referrals from current members, and even a few are new to the Triad from out of state and are still acclimating to the area. Regardless of background, we are proud to have all of our new members call Sedgefield home and especially look forward to seeing all of the young families grow through the years. Thank you for all the support with member referrals – the best way to grow a club is always from within! Chad Flowers
Celeste Manning As a new member of the Cardinal, Ms. Manning is looking forward to playing lots of golf and enjoying the camaraderie of the club. Referred by fellow member Marianne Hedgpeth, Ms. Manning resides in Greensboro just a couple of miles from the club. Please join us in welcoming her as one of our newest members!
Congratulations to Greensboro Airport Rotary Club who raised $630 and collected over 1,200 pounds of food at their Food Drive at The Cardinal. Special thanks to club member Tim Hansen for his involvement and contributions to the success of this project.

CLUBHOUSE NEWS A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF SALES AND CATERING Dealing with change is not always easy, but it’s something we can all relate to. Whether it’s good, bad or just different, we deal with change on a daily basis. During these uncertain times, we have most certainly dealt with a lot of changes in our daily routines, work places and society. Change is inevitable and as much as we might not want it, we ultimately must embrace it. As we move on, battling through the changes COVID19 has created, there are a few updates to the food and beverage operation I would like to make you aware of. Associate Catering and Events Director, Morgan Tucker has taken on a new adventure in Wilmington, NC. She relocated to the Port City on the first of July. Morgan has been an enormous asset to the Food and Beverage Team. Her cheerful demeanor, determination and enthusiasm will truly be missed. We wish Morgan the best as she settles into her new surroundings! By now you should have seen some changes taking place to the food and beverage offerings at the Cardinal. The new turn style set-up will provide a quick and convenient option for those dining at the Cardinal. Combining both bar and dining room will make for a one-stop-shop for all of your food and beverage needs. The Cardinal Room, Dogwood Lounge and Ballroom will be available for private events and larger club functions.
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE Happy Summer Days! Everyone has a way of telling summertime is here. Mine is looking out the window and seeing our members enjoying a sip and snack at the Greenside Café. It’s great to see everyone taking full advantage of the offerings whether it be during a round of golf, lunch or just because! We have had a great start to the season and we are looking forward to our best summer yet. I sure am lucky to be working side by side with our phenomenal staff. Their great team efforts and hard work is what makes us successful and I am proud to be working with each and every one of them. They all have done a wonderful job keeping us safe, switching gears on the fly as our needs change, and most of all working hard to make sure our summer is a memorable one. It sure is hard to imagine a better team than the one we already have! And remember… If one glass of wine is good for you, just imagine what a whole bottle could do! See you around, Maya Panayotova
Dealing with change can often be tough but ultimately it makes us stronger. I am proud to say we are open for private events and are taking every precaution to ensure our members and guests safety. I appreciate all those who have worked with us to accommodate the ever evolving changes to our operation. Thank you for your continued support of your clubs.
If I can be of any additional assistance in your event or party planning process, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you around the club again soon! Warmest regards, Travis Huddleston

The Sedgefield Superheroes are fully trained and ready to protect us all!
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF MEMBER ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNICATIONS
I love summertime at Sedgefield, especially this year. Seeing all of the kids at the pool, in camps and at Kids Club makes my heart happy! We had Superhero camp in June and I am proud to say that we now have seven highly trained superheroes protecting Sedgefield! They are highly trained at shooting Nerf Guns, running at high speeds, dodging fire balls (aka tennis balls) and like most superheroes, making messes. Luckily, they are also pretty good at cleaning up. Speaking of super powers we have some swimmers here at Sedgefield that could put Aquaman to shame thanks to our swim coaches giving lessons through swim camp and private lessons. If your little superhero is interested in learning how to swim give me a call and we will get them on the fast track to swimming like a pro! Hope to see you splashing around in the pool very soon! SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER
A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT
We have hit our stride and are in full on growing season now for our bermuda turf. Aerification went very smoothly and things healed up nicely. All surfaces are doing very well and the small sodded areas in the collars and approaches will continue to only get better with each week. With the cooler than normal spring this year, the areas (#1 fairway, #4 fairway, #9 fairway, and #10 fairway) where we still have old Common Bermuda has taken a bit longer to fill in and thicken up. With some extra nutrients and warmer weather, we will start to see these areas improve.
Well, it has been an eventful first month here at The Cardinal. Within my first month we have experienced temperatures that range from 38 to 91 degrees, a frost, a flood, and aerification of greens, tees, and fairways. As you can imagine this is not how I would have drawn it up, but it has been eye-opening right away to some things that need to be addressed by the agronomy team in the upcoming year; one of the biggest things being the need of additional drainage added in key areas to help remove standing water throughout the course.
The new short game area is coming along well. The greens have taken off and are really starting to fill in nicely. We are hoping to be finished and everything grassed the first week in July. The last part of the project will be to install a new cart path on the driving range side of Forsyth Drive that will connect the two sides of the road. We are very excited about the way things are shaping up at this new facility and can’t wait to finally open this up to the membership in the coming months.
Come on out and enjoy the sun and some great golfing conditions. I look forward to seeing you around the club. Chad Cromer
As I am writing this the agronomy team has done an awesome job of finishing up a long week of aerification. The timing of aerification was perfect after the very wet weeks leading up to it, especially on the greens. Aerification is a crucial practice to the health of our bentgrass putting surfaces. Although it is disruptive to the playing surface for a short time, it aids in the ability to maintain healthy greens through the stressful summer months. Also, due to the flooding that I was able to see right away, we decided to go ahead and pull cores on all the fairways that typically flood. This was done to start slowly firming up these fairways by removing silt that has been deposited on these holes with every flood. Along with this, we plan to start topdressing these fairways to once again help with drainage and firmness. Going into summer while maintaining the golf course day in and day out, we will turn our attention toward starting to clean up the weeds around the golf course and keeping the creek more presentable. We will also be working toward improving the turf quality on the tees. The tees at The Cardinal are quite small and get a lot of traffic, so by increasing the fertility and maybe adding an additional aerification we should be able to help improve the rate at which the tees recover. I have really enjoyed my time at The Cardinal so far. I think it is a great golf course and my team and I look forward to the challenge of every day leaving it better than we found it. Hope to see you on the course, and look forward to meeting more of you. Ross Jernigan

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL Swim noodles aren’t just for swimming! Do you have trouble creating a positive angle of attack with your driver? Grabbing a swim noodle may help. First, lets explain what “positive angle of attack” means. Positive AOA means the player is hitting up on the ball at impact. With your driver, you should be hitting up on the ball. This will create a better launch angle and help reduce spin. These two components of flight help us maximize the distance the balls carry in the air. If a player has a negative AOA, he/she will see much more spin being produced and a lower launch angle. This doesn’t mean the ball will be hit low, just that those two components will be working against the player reducing the amount of distance the driver flies. I call this the +25 drill, named for one of my students. As you can see from the picture, all you need is a swim noodle. However you could use an empty water bottle or even one of your headcovers. Place a tee on either side of the noodle to staple it to the ground. Tee the ball up behind the noodle about 12-18 inches. The goal is the make swings with your driver and not hit the noodle. Not only will this drill help you create a more positive angle of attack, it will also help shallow out your swing and swing more from the inside on the downswing.
If you need more help with this drill or any other part of your game, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Professional Staff at either the Cardinal or Sedgefield.

"Sedgefield Sunset"
SEDGEFIELD TIMES
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
1 3/4 ounce tequila 3/4 ounce OJ 3/4 ounce grenadine Half of one lime 1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
First, fill your Sedgefield highball glass with ice. In a shaker, add tequila and orange juice then shake vigorously. Pour into your glass over ice. Squeeze the juice from half of a lime into your glass. To make this sunset really pop, grab a spoon and pour the grenadine into your glass over the back of a spoon. This will allow it to make its way to the bottom of the glass and make it look like a sunset. Top with Grand Marnier. Garnish with an orange, lime and cherry then enjoy!

FRESH VS. FROZEN: THE FRUIT AND VEGETABLE DEBATE Consuming enough fruits and vegetables every day is a challenge for most people. Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Vitamins and minerals are essential as they perform hundreds of roles within the body. Frozen foods aid in the consumption of fruits and vegetables by providing an easily accessible and convenient option. However, there is debate around whether frozen foods are as nutritionally beneficial as fresh foods. FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Ideal consumption of fruits and vegetables would be fresh, in-season, locally grown produce. Farmers’ markets are a great option to find fresh local produce. This ensures you are getting produce picked when nutrient levels were at their peak and on your counter within a couple of days. Or, the even more ideal option, grown in your backyard and on your table the same day. However, home-grown or local produce is not always a possibility. Purchasing produce from a grocery store is the next best option to find fresh produce. In the US, produce can spend anywhere from 3 days to several weeks in transit before arriving at your local grocery stores. Fresh produce is stored in a chilled, controlled atmosphere and sometimes treated with chemicals to prevent it from spoiling. Due to advanced transportation, we can enjoy fruits and vegetables all year round regardless of where we live. But for this to be possible, fresh produce found in stores must be picked before fully ripe. This allows time for the fruit or vegetable to fully ripen during transportation. However, this means that produce at the grocery store may not always be at its nutritional peak. Picking produce before it fully ripens does have its disadvantages such as the produce having less time to develop a full range of vitamins, minerals and natural antioxidents and losing those nutrients through time. FROZEN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES Frozen fruits and vegetables are convenient and are picked at peak ripeness. This means they are harvested when they are at their most nutritious. The process after harvest looks slightly different when comparing vegetables and fruits. FROZEN VEGETABLES After vegetables are harvested, they are typically washed, blanched, cut, frozen, and packaged within a few hours. The blanching process is where frozen vegetables tend to lose some of their nutritional value. Blanching involves placing fresh veggies in boiling water. This takes place for just a few minutes to kill off harmful bacteria and prevent the loss of flavor, color, and texture. The vegetables must then be cooled quickly in ice-cold water to stop the cooking process. The greatest loss of nutrients occurs at this point. The boiling water draws out some of the water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin B and vitamin C. On the other hand, the heat may enhance fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin E.
SEDGEFIELD TIMES
FROZEN FRUITS Fruits are washed, cut, frozen, and packaged similarly to vegetables. But typically, fruit does not undergo the blanching process and therefore loses fewer nutrients in the freezing and packaging process. Instead, fruit can be treated with ascorbic acid which is a form of vitamin C that can help prevent spoiling. THE FROZEN PRODUCE ADVANTAGE Overall, the nutrient content varies only slightly between fresh and frozen foods. Fresh foods start with less than maximal nutrients as they are picked before peak ripeness. They then lose some nutritional value during transport to the store. Frozen foods can lose some nutrients in the blanching process. But freezing can also help preserve nutrient value. While the nutritional content of fresh and frozen produce is relatively similar, frozen produce may have a slight advantage as it offers an added level of convenience. Often you may struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables simply due to time demands. Frozen foods offer a simple, nutritious, and convenient solution. In addition, frozen fruits and veggies help eliminate food waste. When you bring home fresh blueberries you have a window of time in which they will be ripe and good for eating. Often, we forget about our produce and find them once it’s too late. This leads to us throwing them out. Frozen berries and other fruits and vegetables offer a solution to avoid unnecessary food waste.

TENNIS TIPS You can still practice your tennis game at home, in your garage, or your backyard. You don’t even need a court. This is one of the oldest solo tennis drills but it still works great – especially for kids developing their game. It’s a little challenging at first but can be mastered in a short time.
THE BOUNCING BALL RACKET DRILL
1. Hold your racket, palm up, in front of you. The hitting side of the racket strings should be facing skywards. Bounce a ball off the strings as many times as possible without stopping. I consider this the forehand side. 2. Pronate your hand so that your palm is now facing down. I consider this the backhand side. Now to try to do the same, bouncing the ball of this side of the racket strings as many times as possible.
Some children may find this drill difficult. In that case, you can have them do one hit, bounce the ball off the floor and then bounce it off their rackets again. They can keep repeating until they master this. Then they can try the regular drill again. Most kids master this drill after doing it several times. This drill is good for adults too and I still do it.
