A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD REGIONAL DIRECTOR
Look who’s talking about Sedgefield CC! Please enjoy a few of our favorite social media mentions below–and keep sharing your experiences by tagging us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a chance to be featured in the next newsletter.
It has been a busy summer and our members have indeed made the club their home away from home. With travel opportunities more limited than normal, we are thrilled that you have chosen to spend time with us and I hope we've done a good job making your staycations entertaining. As we head into the fall, I'm excited to welcome Taylor Chrismon to the Sedgefield Team as our Member Activities and Communications Director. Taylor comes to us with a background in event planning plus a passion for kids of all ages and I'm so excited about the fresh new ideas and programs she is sure to bring to the club. As I write this, she has been with us a mere two days and has truly hit the ground running with energy and enthusiasm. You are going to love her! I'm excited to announce that we will be keeping the pool open on weekends throughout the month of September. Let's hope for incredible weather that will allow you to continue to soak up those rays for a bit longer. I would like to extend a special thank you to Evan Morris and Maya Panayotova who have taken the pool under their direction this season to provide more oversight to our pool management company. We hope this has made your poolside experience more enjoyable.
Thank you for your support of the staff and the club! I look forward to seeing you soon! Beverly Marler

CLUBHOUSE NEWS A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF SALES AND CATERING
A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FOOD AND BEVERAGE
Wow, what a whirlwind of a summer it has been. We continue to hold strong at both Sedgefield and the Cardinal. I’ve never seen the Greenside Café and golf course more active than it has been this summer. Whether it has been a refreshing dip in the pool or a cold beverage on the patio, it’s wonderful to see our membership taking full advantage of the amenities available to them.
Greetings! While we had a successful tournament week and were thrilled to be able to host the Wyndham Championship this year, one thing is hard to deny… We missed our members! We missed the golf fanatics roaming around the course, the camaraderie and spirit our members bring to the event.
Sticking to social distancing guidelines, we hosted our first "Suave and Sassy" dinner club on the pool side patio. Their “unmasked” theme featured a menu of cool refreshing summer time favorites such as lobster rolls and seared Ahi tuna nachos. Our Live After 5 dinners have been a growing success thanks to you and your support. If you haven’t been, join us each Tuesday evening on the Greenside Café patio and lawn for live music and chef attended grilling station. Each week is a new theme so be sure to check out “This Week at Sedgefield” for the featured entrée. The action doesn’t end at Sedgefield. The Cardinal by Pete Dye has been buzzing with activity as well. Sixty-eight players teed it up at the Club Championship and twenty-eight ladies enjoyed the Cardinal Ladies Member Guest. Leave it to the ladies to bring the excitement. The short game area became home to a flock of socially distanced flamingos as the ladies enjoyed their Caribbean themed dinner. Looking ahead I can say I am proud to be part of the McConnell Golf team where the action never stops. Who knows when we’ll get back to "normal" but until then we’ll continue to provide you with unique and socially distanced activities and events.
If there is anything we can do to help make your experience more enjoyable, please don’t hesitate to ask. I look forward to seeing you at the club. Warmest regards, Travis Huddleston
We are excited to see you back and are looking forward to a fun fall season. Line up your plans and mark your calendars for “Live after Five” at the Greenside Café, Oktoberfest features and fall favorite activities! Whether it is floating in the pool, dining at the table or playing golf, we hope you have a tee-rific time! And remember… It’s not drinking alone if you are social distancing! See you around the clubhouse, Maya Panayotova

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS
Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.
Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).
It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.
FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER
If you have not had a chance to try out the new short game area at Sedgefield, you are missing out! A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT
A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT
As we are nearing the end of Summer and approaching our Fall season, please come out and enjoy your golf course as this can provide for some of the best weather and course conditions throughout the year. As I write this we are just coming off a very good week hosting the Wyndham Championship. The course played awesome early in the week before all the rain began and then the consecutive days of rain made the conditions much softer over the weekend. Overall we were happy with how it played considering the weather is nothing we can control. This was my 18th PGA TOUR event and I never thought that I would be hosting one without fans. It was very strange this year for sure! But it was nice to see quite a few of the members in the evenings in your back yards or throughout the streets in the neighborhood as you were watching some golf. The one positive thing about not having fans is that you all get your golf course back with less distractions and noise from the tear down of the hospitality tents that normally take about 4 weeks to complete after the tournament.
Fall is right around the corner. It’s my favorite time of year on a golf course. With the welcome weather change it is so enjoyable to be on the course every day. Not only is the weather change welcomed by the agronomy team that has been working hard all summer in the heat, but also we are back to prime bentgrass growing weather. With the cooler temperatures we will be able to quickly heal in any summer scars on the greens while also providing a smoother and faster playing surface.
As September arrives, we begin the process of raising our mowing heights and preparing them for the cooler weather ahead. This is a very vital part to our agronomic program that allows the bermuda plants to be as healthy as possible before they go dormant. It also allows for some added leaf tissue so that it can better sustain the cart and foot traffic during the winter while it’s not growing and able to recover.
Overall we had a great summer for golf at The Cardinal. We only went through a couple of wet stretches which allowed the agronomy team to stay busy maintaining the golf course and the tee sheet to stay full. As I finish up my first summer at The Cardinal I have learned a lot about the course and we are beginning to plan fall and winter projects. One of the first things we will be doing is removing the stairs behind the second green. We will regrade this area to have a slight slope from the back of the green to the cart path and then sod the area with a grass that will handle the traffic and shade much better. The reason for this change is to allow more room to disperse foot traffic and have more room for mowers to turn when mowing the green. We also plan to remove a few trees in this area this winter to improve growing conditions.
Hopefully by the time this goes out, you have had the chance to utilize your new short game area that is now open. This is a great addition to the club and we are excited to offer this new amenity for your enjoyment!
As you are reading this, the agronomy team is finishing up our fall aerification. This will be a quick disruption of the greens playing surfaces, but is so important for the health of the greens by allowing them to literally get a breath of fresh air after a long summer. You may also notice around the middle of September we will put out our fall fertility application on all the short cut and some high traffic rough areas. This application will insure the Bermuda grass goes into dormancy as healthy as possible.
We still have some really good golfing weather left this year before the cold weather arrives, so take advantage and I hope to see you all out on the course.
I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the course and some nice fall weather. If you see me on the course please stop and say hello.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL
PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE How many times have you been to the range and changed your swing thought or actual swing during your practice session? Have you ever said, “let me try this?" How many of you don’t actually have a swing thought when you are standing over the ball? I ask these questions because I hear the words “be more consistent” in almost every lesson I give. If you are changing swing to swing, how do you expect to be consistent? If you don’t have a swing thought or an actual fundamental to work on, what are you actually working on when you go to the range. Here are a couple of tips to help create a good practice session and allow you to practice with a purpose. Setup your station with alignment sticks. One for the target and one parallel for your feet. Grab a note card and write down one key fundamental you would like to work on. Set the card on the ground in front of you to remind yourself of what you’re working on. Remember KISS. Take a practice swing with the “new” move first and do it slowly. Swinging slowly will allow you to focus on the move you are working on. Have a swing thought. Find a one or two word phrase that connects you to the action you are trying to improve upon. Try these tips for a more purposeful practice session. If you need any other tips on how to practice more effectively, please come by the golf shop. We’d love to talk golf and help you with your game. See you on the range!

COOKIES OF THE MONTH COOKIES OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER: PECAN CHOCOLATE CHIP DELIGHTS James R. Patterson III - Sedgefield Country Club
List of Ingredients: 1 Cup Unsalted Butter 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 1 Cup Brown Sugar, packed 1 Cup Vegetable Oil 1 Large Egg 1 TSP Baking Soda 1 TSP Salt 1 TSP Vanilla 1 1/4 Cups Quick Cooking Oats 3 ½ Cups AP Flour 3/4 Cup Chopped Pecans 3/4 Cup Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 1/4 ¼ Cups Lightly Crushed Cornflakes Directions: Note: dough requires chilling. Cream butter and sugars in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Cream until light and fluffy. You can also use a hand mixer. Add oil and stir until smooth. Add egg and vanilla, mix until smooth, then stir in the salt and baking soda. Mix in oats and flour until just mixed. Stir in chocolate chips, pecans and cornflakes. Scoop 2 tablespoon balls of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet covered in wax or parchment paper. No need to spread the balls out, you’re just going to chill them. Cover with plastic wrap and chill at least one hour. (If you chill longer than 4 hours you may need to let them warm up a few minutes on the counter before baking.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silpat baking mats. Place cookies 2” apart on prepared cookie sheets. Lightly press down with the palm of your hand. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the bottoms just start to turn golden brown. Cool at least 5 minutes on cookie sheet before removing to rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.

OCTOBER: GLUTEN-FREE CORNMEAL THUMBPRINT COOKIES Michael Monahan - Grande Dunes Member Club
A startling number of people these days are reporting gluten sensitivities, and gluten-free baking has become a “subset” of baking. I love the flavor and texture of these tender gluten-free cornmeal-based cookies, and the way the raspberry flavor complements the corn. Yield: 3 dozen “Bite sized” cookies List of Ingredients: 1 ½ Cups All-Purpose Gluten-Free Rice Flour 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal 1 TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Table Salt 1 ¾ sticks Unsalted Butter, softened, plus more for pans ¾ Cup Firmly Packed Light-Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla Extract ½ Cup Seedless Raspberry Preserves (or jelly of your choice) Directions: Preheat oven to 350° and set two racks to the middle positions, with space in between. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease lightly with butter). In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Using a standing or handheld mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar in a large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Portion the dough into one inch balls, and arrange them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Press each with your thumb; then fill each depression with a teaspoon of raspberry jam. Bake until just barely golden brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through.

FITNESS NEWS
TIPS FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS
EXERCISE AND STRESS: GET MOVING TO MANAGE STRESS Exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Being active can boost your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries.
You know that exercise does your body good, but you're too busy and stressed to fit it into your routine. Hold on a second — there's good news when it comes to exercise and stress. Virtually any form of exercise, from aerobics to yoga, can act as a stress reliever. If you're not an athlete or even if you're out of shape, you can still make a little exercise go a long way toward stress management. Discover the connection between exercise and stress relief — and why exercise should be part of your stress management plan. PUT EXERCISE AND STRESS RELIEF TO WORK FOR YOU A successful exercise program begins with a few simple steps. Consult with your doctor. If you haven't exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Walk before you run. Build up your fitness level gradually. Excitement about a new program can lead to overdoing it and possibly even injury.
For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends getting at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity (such as brisk walking or swimming) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (such as running). You also can do a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Also, incorporate strength training exercises at least twice a week. Do what you love. Virtually any form of exercise or movement can increase your fitness level while decreasing your stress. The most important thing is to pick an activity that you enjoy. Examples include walking, stair climbing, jogging, bicycling, yoga, tai chi, gardening, weightlifting and swimming.
STICK WITH IT Starting an exercise program is just the first step. Here are some tips for sticking with a new routine or reinvigorating a tired workout: Set SMART goals. Write down SMART goals — specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-limited goals. If your primary goal is to reduce stress in your life and recharge your batteries, your specific goals might include committing to walking during your lunch hour three times a week or, if needed, finding a baby sitter to watch your children so that you can slip away to attend a cycling class. Find a friend. Knowing that someone is waiting for you to show up at the gym or the park can be a powerful incentive. Working out with a friend, co-worker or family member often brings a new level of motivation and commitment to your workouts. Change up your routine. If you've always been a competitive runner, take a look at other less competitive options that may help with stress reduction, such as Pilates or yoga classes. As an added bonus, these kinder, gentler workouts may enhance your running while also decreasing your stress. Exercise in increments. Even brief bouts of activity offer benefits. For instance, if you can't fit in one 30-minute walk, try three 10minute walks instead. Interval training, which entails brief (60 to 90 seconds) bursts of intense activity at almost full effort, is being shown to be a safe, effective and efficient way of gaining many of the benefits of longer duration exercise. What's most important is making regular physical activity part of your lifestyle.
Whatever you do, don't think of exercise as just one more thing on your to-do list. Find an activity you enjoy — whether it's an active tennis match or a meditative meander down to a local park and back — and make it part of your regular routine. Any form of physical activity can help you unwind and become an important part of your approach to easing stress.
Pencil it in. Although your schedule may necessitate a morning workout one day and an evening activity the next, carving out some time to move every day helps you make your exercise program an ongoing priority.
STAY CONNECTED We miss seeing you at the fitness center and look forward to the day we can re-open. A NOTE FROM YOUR TENNIS DIRECTOR The fall is one of the most beautiful and ideal times to play tennis. We have plenty of ways to get you on the court in September and October including our Member Guest Tournament, Dining on the Courts and our clinics. There are many health benefits to playing tennis including: Playing tennis outdoors is a great way to get vitamin D. High levels of vitamin D are linked to a lower risk of just about everything, including heart disease. Tennis is an excellent example of interval training or burst activity. Our ancestors ran and relaxed, ran and relaxed. 45 minutes on the treadmill is not the way to health. Ramping up your heart rate with intermittent cool-down is the way to go. Build muscle mass by using your arms and legs to start/stop and hit on the court. Aerobic activity is great for healthy bones and osteoporosis prevention. Tennis will crank up nitric oxide, another element great for your heart. Playing this racquet sport with others builds friendships and is great for bonding. Social people live longer. Just don’t get too competitive. Lower risk of obesity in tennis players leads to longer lives and lower heart attack risk. Tennis players have better lipid (cholesterol) profiles than agematched controls. Improved blood sugar control and lower risk of diabetes Lower risk of cardiovascular disease. See you on the courts!
