CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT YOUR CLUB MANAGER Welcome to September! The weather will hopefully start to cool down so we can continue enjoying all the outdoor activities at The Water’s Edge Country Club. Fall is traditionally considered by many a great time of the year to play golf. Weather conditions are usually ideal this time of the year. The cooler temperatures produce low humidity, changing foliage, and exceptional playing conditions. All golfers should make sure to take advantage of this weather and play as many rounds as possible over the next few months. Golfers shouldn’t be the only ones to take advantage of this spectacular time of the year. Tennis players and Pickleballers should also come out and enjoy the beautiful Fall weather. We are very excited about the enthusiasm of our Pickleball group. We’ve have had two successful Pickleball socials and l am looking forward to the next one. Samantha Lester our equestrian manager has also been busy with her horse camps, bingo nights, movie nights, and young equestrian camps! Thank you to Samantha and everyone who has supported her events. Many of our staff have returned to school and some of our members will be returning home to prepare their kids for the start of the new school year. I would like to thank our staff for their hard work all summer long and throughout the year and to all the members for your continual support and attendance of club events.

A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT “Summer blues” are certainly in full swing for golf course managers. Hazy, hot, and dry. Greens have held up very well with the multiple aerifications we’ve been doing. Keeping the greens “breathing” is crucial during the hot summer. Along with more topdressing, greens have been rolling as good as ever. The majority of the grass we have lost has been Poanna, which in itself is not a bad thing, just very unsightly. We will begin seeding these areas soon. Just waiting for the weather to break a bit for better survival. The course has gotten a little soft as we get later into the season. Multiple factors contribute to this. Without adequate rainfall, turf likes about an inch a week, it’s difficult to get the water deep. I do believe our investments with more wetting agents have helped and we will continue if not enhance these practices. The topdressing we did in late winter has grown over and discussions are being had to do more throughout the season. Our goal is to be the best, and we will continue to strive to get there!!

COURSE REMINDERS Cool season turf divots can survive when replaced. Please replace them and step down. If only a portion is in tack, replace that and sand the balance. Too many are just being sanded and many aren’t being smoothed with foot. This plays hell on the mowers and can be avoided. Ball marks should be fixed and one other. If all practiced this, we wouldn’t have any issues. Please be courteous to your fellow golfers. Private carts, bikes, skateboards, etc. are not permitted on the course at any time. Please let your guests and children aware of these rules. Practicing is also not permitted on the course, and we remain closed on Mondays. Some are still venturing out after hours and breaking these rules. Aerification Dates: September 7th & 8th

THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER UPDATE A NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER We hope all of you are having a wonderful and fun summer. From the trail rides and horse camps, to the barn bingo's and lessons, this barn has not slowed down one bit this summer and my barn staff and I are loving every minute of it. This summer has been one of the busiest that I can remember and the barn hasn't seen this much horse activity in really long time. All of the Horse Camps have been successful and there have been great turnouts at every event. I want to thank each and every one of our members, their families and guests for supporting the equestrian center. I would also like to thank the country club and their staff for helping with the events at the barn. All of you do a great job. All of the horses are doing well and have enjoyed all of the visits and treats they have received. Both of the pigs are also doing well. As the riding season comes to an end, the barn will still be open daily for ring rides, lessons and trail rides. Stall and pasture board is also available. If you would like any additional information about rides, boarding or the barn in general, please call or email me. The barn is open for those who would like to come visit and bring treats as well. Apples and carrots are a favorite for the horses and the pigs love popcorn.

Did You Know?

An average sized horses heart is the size of a basketball. Horses can sleep standing up or laying down. It takes 9 months for a horse to grow a brand new hoof.

ADDITIONAL NOTE FROM SAMANTHA LESTER, THE EQUESTRIAN CENTER MANAGER Hummer is a 23 yr old Clydesdale cross who has been at the equestrian center for 5 years. He is one of the favorite horses at the barn. Over the last 6 months, he has started showing signs of lameness. We had him examined by two veterinarians and he was diagnosed with a stifle injury along with arthritis developing in both front knees.

HUMMER

It is with a sad heart that we have determined that it is best for Hummer to retire. He will be going to live with Sam at her house to live out the rest of his life. Below are some of Hummers favorite things: Loves apples and carrots Loves to be out on the trail. He was a schooling/lesson horse that taught kids English riding and jumping. He has lived in Connecticut and then moved to Florida before coming to live with me at SML He was used for lessons, ring rides and trail rides and horse camps at the barn. He is the most humble horse and just an old soul. Please come by the barn on Friday, September 3rd between 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to join in our retirement celebration. We will provide light refreshments. Come take pictures with Hummer! Bring the kids and enjoy barn games and finger painting a horse. Friendly competition for adults: hay bale toss, cornhole and horse halter toss. Come watch the Horses bob for apples!

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS His top 30 effort earned him a check for $41,013 and a spot in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, the three-event series that determines PGA Tour eligibility for the 2021-22 season. Smalley has made the cut in all five of his PGA Tour starts and earned enough FedExCup points to finish inside the top-200 and qualify for the Korn Ferry playoffs. Smalley joined Sedgefield in June of 2020 and estimates he has played 75 rounds or more on the classic Donald Ross design. “I feel pretty comfortable with the lines on each hole,” he said during the week. “The course is always in really good shape. It’s playing a little different than it usually does for us. There’s a little more runout in the fairways, which has changed a couple of the clubs that I hit off of the tee. The greens are a little quicker, but other than that, it’s the same golf course.” Photo Courtesy: John Gillooly/Wyndham Championship

KEVIN KISNER WINS WILD 6-MAN PLAYOFF AT THE WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP Kevin Kisner birdied the second extra hole to end a six-man playoff and capture a thrilling 2021 Wyndham Championship at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club. Known as a dogged match-play competitor, Kisner stiffed his approach shot on 18 and calmly rolled in a 3-foot putt. For the victory — the fourth of his career and first since 2019 — the former University of Georgia Bulldog banked $1,152,000.

Smalley enjoyed plenty of local support during the week. Along with his father and his mother, Maria — both of whom have caddied for Smalley throughout his career — his sister, Katie, and numerous friends and playing partners from Sedgefield followed his group and rooted him on. “It was nice to hear their cheers out there,” Smalley said. “I don’t get to play in front of a whole lot of people very often. It’s pretty cool to have people scream at you after you make a putt. To have an opportunity to play a PGA Tour event on your home course is pretty special. I think it helped me out quite a bit. I know my way around. I’ve played out here numerous times, so I felt comfortable on the course. To have that finish was pretty cool.”

Adam Scott shot 65 in the final round to make the playoff. He had a chance for victory on the first playoff hole, but his 4-foot birdie putt never threatened the cup. Kisner and Scott were joined in the playoff by former champion Si Woo Kim, Braden Grace, Kevin Na and Roger Sloan. It marked just the third time in PGA Tour history that six golfers have gone to a playoff. Kisner began Sunday’s final round four shots behind leader Russell Henley, but he birdied Nos. 16 and 17, eventually shooting 66 to reach 15 under and the playoff. “My first playoff win,” said Kisner, who was previously 0-5 in playoffs prior to his Wyndham title. “To be standing here is pretty sweet.” Henley held the lead after the first three rounds. He recovered from a slow start on Sunday to reach 17-under after a birdie on the 10th hole, but the Georgia Bulldog bogeyed three of the next four holes and came to the 72nd hole needing par to stay at 15 under. He fell short of the playoff after narrowly missing a 5-foot par putt. It proved a brutal ending to what had been an otherwise amazing performance from Henley. McConnell Golf member Alex Smalley didn’t quite play his way into the six-man playoff, but the former Duke University star gained plenty more along the way. Playing on his home course, Sedgefield CC, the 24-yearold Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a sizzling 64 on Friday. He responded to the heat of Sunday’s final-round pressure in equally torrid fashion, finishing his day with three straight birdies and a 4under 66. In just his fifth PGA Tour event, playing on a sponsor’s exemption in a fullfield event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season, Smalley finished at 10-under par and tied for 29th.

PB&J CRUMBLE COOKIE

CHOCOLATE PRETZEL OATMEAL COOKIE

BY SEAN O'NEILL

BY PATRICK BUDNIEWSKI

This cookie recipe comes from one of the first kitchens I ever worked in. The chef there bought a new bread maker and we tried out a couple of bread recipes. He found a peanut butter and jelly bread that turned out amazing. We put it on the menu after I made a grilled PB&J on the PB&J bread for lunch one day. The kids loved it and from there we tried just about every PB&J recipe we could. This cookie is one that stood out and was well liked.

Two years ago, around Christmas time, I had a cookie very similar to this at a holiday party I attended with my sister’s family in Nashville. It was so good that I had to try to recreate it. I started with my grandmother's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe, made a few changes and this was the result. My favorite

Ingredients: Cooking spray or butter, for coating the pan 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour ½ TSP Fine Salt

½ TSP Baking Powder 1 Large Egg

1 1/3 Cups Granulated Sugar 1 TSP Vanilla Extract 12 TBSP Unsalted Butter, at room temperature 1 1/3 Cups Natural Creamy Peanut Butter (no sugar added), at room temperature 1 1/2 Cups Concord Grape Jelly, at room temperature 2/3 Cup Coarsely Chopped Salted, Roasted Peanuts (Optional) Directions: Arrange a rack in the middle of a convection oven and heat to 325°F on low fan. Line the sides and bottom of a half hotel pan with aluminum foil, then coat the foil with cooking spray or butter; set aside. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside. Place the butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat on low speed until combined, then increase the speed to mediumhigh and beat until creamed. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides and paddle with a rubber spatula. Add the peanut butter and beat on medium-high speed until combined. Add the egg and vanilla and continue to beat until completely combined. Stop the mixer and scrape down again. Return the mixer to low speed and gradually add the flour mixture, stopping when the flour is almost incorporated (do not over mix). Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in the remaining flour by hand with the rubber spatula. Sprinkle 1/2 of the mixture in the baking pan and press into an even layer. Bake until the top is light golden-brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Dollop the jelly over the crust and spread into an even layer as best as you can without disturbing the crust. (Don’t worry if the jelly doesn't spread much, it will melt in the oven.) Sprinkle evenly with the chopped peanuts, if using. Using your hands, crumble the remaining dough into pieces about the size of almonds and sprinkle evenly into the pan. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the top is golden-brown, about 20 minutes

cookie year-round is an Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie, and adding the pretzel and flaky sea salt element just adds another layer of goodness to it. Fresh out of the oven with a glass of milk and you could easily eat the whole plate! Ingredients: 1 Cup Salted Butter 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 Eggs, Whole 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract 1 ¾ Cup and 2 TBSP All Purpose Flour 1TSP Baking Soda 1/2 TSP Cinnamon 1/2 TSP Kosher Salt 1 ½ Cup Old Fashioned Oats 2 ½ Cups Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips 1 Cup Mini Pretzels, crushed ¼ Cup Flaky Sea Salt (for sprinkling) Directions: Cream together butter and sugars until combined. Continue mixing, adding one egg at a time until combined. Add vanilla and continue mixing until creamy. In a separate bowl add flour, cinnamon, baking soda and kosher salt. Slowly add flour mixture to egg sugar mixture while mixing on low speed. Add 1/4 of the mixture at a time, scraping down sides making sure to fully incorporate flour mixture. After flour mixture is all combined, add oats and chocolate chips folding them in by hand. Roll dough into two tablespoon size balls. Gently push a few crushed pretzels into each ball and flatten with palm of hand to 1/2 inch thickness. Bake in oven at 350°F for nine to 11 minutes. While cookies are cooling sprinkle with flaky salt sea salt.

more. Remove the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely. To serve, grasp the foil in the middle of the pan and lift the bar cookie slab out of the pan and onto a cutting board. Cut into bars.
