CLUB NEWS WOW! It has certainly been an interesting past several months. We are grateful for your support as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times. Tons of positive emails, calls and conversations with members! Thank you! The staff continues to work hard in an effort to be as creative as they can with our offerings. I am hopeful under Phase 3 we will be back to full service. In the midst of all the craziness in the world around us, the club will officially turn 20 years old on July 15. We will have an opportunity later in the year to celebrate this milestone. Having been here for 17 of the 20 years of the club’s existence, it has truly been a pleasure to watch the club grow and evolve into what it has become today. For those members who have been with us from day one, we thank you for laying the foundation for us. I would also like to thank our McConnell Golf team and family for the last 9 years as we are in the best possible hands. Lastly, I would like to recognize staff members Todd Lawrence, Roy Tapia and Andy Watt from our golf course maintenance department. All three of these gentleman have been with us since the club opened on July 15, 2000.
As always my door is open. Be well and stay safe and thank you! Michael Thomas, Club Manager

Ball Mark Repair: It’s Your Obligation In the USGA Rules of Golf under the etiquette section there is a section titled Repair of Divots, Ball-Marks and Damage by Shoes and it states: “Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.”
Incorrectly fixed ball mark It is every player’s obligation to help take care of the golf courses they play. Repairing ball marks and taking care in how we walk on the greens is the number one way that golfers can help keep the greens they play on smooth and healthy. When we make a ball mark we should all be excited because it means we hit the green. Now we have to find that ball mark and fix it. And if we have time and we are not holding others up in the fairway, we should find and fix one more. Studies from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, (GCSAA) have shown that it takes a player 5 seconds to fix a fresh ball mark. A freshly repaired ball mark will heal in 24 hours where as a ball mark left unrepaired for one hour will take 15 days before the ugly scar has satisfactorily healed. It also shows that a ball mark not fixed properly will take just as long to heal as one that hasn’t been fixed at all. It’s every golfer’s obligation to the game to learn how to properly fix a ball mark. It’s important for the health of the greens, and for smooth rolling putts. It also shows respect for our fellow golfers that we are trying to leave the putting surface as smooth as we found it. Always remember this when repairing ball marks – push your ball marks back toward the center; do not lift or twist harshly.
Correctly fixed ball mark

2020 Swim Team Information
Pending on the guidelines set in place for phase three we have a tentative game plan in place for the 2020 swim team season. We are very hopeful that we can have swim team this year and would love to get the kids together for another successful and fun season. If you are interested in swim team this season we do ask that you please register by June 24th. This will help us plan out practices and meets when and if we can move forward with this season. The season would start on Monday, June 29th and end on Sunday, August 2nd. Due to a slightly shorter season the fees would be $120 for the first child and $100 for the second/third. Swimmers who are 15 & over can swim free of charge but still need to sign up online. The team suit is not a requirement for this season. We would have an end of year banquet on Sunday, August 2nd. Swim Meets (new schedule) Based on phase 3 guidelines, we will be holding meets in age groups. Each age group's time limit will be based on the amount of participation we have at each club. Once that age group is complete, they will leave the pool deck, we will clean and the next group will come in. A set time schedule will be sent out to all parents beforehand. Dates: Time Trials ~ July 7th Home meet vs. MacGregor ~ July 11th Away meet vs. Caroline ~ July 14th Home meet vs. North Ridge ~ July 21st Away meet vs. Raleigh ~ July 28th Practice Schedule Would start on Monday, June 29th. Designed for those aged 4 to 6 who are not confident swimmers and are close to being apart of our swim team, can swim but cannot make the full length to compete or may not know how to swim all strokes. This is a developmental, perfect way to introduce your young child to a competitive swim environment. At the end of the year our tiny tsunamis will compete in their very own meet against the other teams in our swim league on Friday, July 31st. NOTE: Children must be able to swim 25 yards unassisted with their faces in the water and be able to jump or dive into the pool unassisted. If they are not a strong swimmer, the Tiny Tsunamis program may be for them! What is the cost? The programs fee is $75 which includes over 10 half-hour sessions with our swim coaches and an end of season meet against our swim leagues teams. When will they practice? We will have an evaluation session on June 29th from 4:00- 5:00 p.m. in which our coaches will decide whether Tiny Tsunamis is right for your child, they are better suited to the main Tsunamis or you would be better to pursue private lessons instead. TEE IT UP This has certainly been an interesting start to the 2020 golf season. While we all have felt the effects of the Covid19 Pandemic, I feel that the membership and staff have become closer during the past few months. We have been fortunate to be able to continue to play the game that we love during these trying times. The course has remained busy with member play and I personally would like to thank Todd Lawrence and his staff for the outstanding job that they have done maintaining the course to an excellent standard with the large increase in rounds over the past few months.
Many of our events that were scheduled for the spring have been moved to the fall including the Tuscarora Men’s Member-Guest and Azalea Ladies MemberGuest. We are looking forward to these events and having the ability to once again showcase our outstanding club. This was surely an unusual end of May and beginning of June considering the Rex Hospital Open had been cancelled. It is one of the best weeks of the year for our club and we look forward to once again hosting the event in 2021. We will start back with member golf tournaments in the upcoming months. The look will be different but hopefully it will allow some fun competitive play for our membership. In the upcoming months, we will have many events including the Red, White and Blue Tournament, Member-Member Golf Tournament, Couples Golf Events, the Newtonian, and WSMGA 3-Man Tournament. These events will be scheduled tee times as we will avoid shotgun starts to keep our members and staff safe. For additional information or to sign up for any of these events use the Wakefield Plantation calendar or call the golf shop.

GOLFING FOR A CAUSE
Lakeside Lodging at Old North State Club
Can there be too much of a good thing? How about playing 694 holes of golf in one day?! We are incredibly proud of Country Club of Asheville Dir of Golf Matt Stewart, Asst Pro Brian Muller and Holston Hills Country Club Asst Pro Joey Batuello whom each played a golf marathon today and raised nearly $20,000 for Folds of Honor. The funds will support educational scholarships for the spouses and children of American fallen and/or disabled service members. A big thank you to McConnell Golf members for supporting this great cause! Musgrove Mill Cottages and Suites
