CLUB NEWS Needless to say it has not been your typical fall or year for that matter. As we head into the Holiday Season, we are thankful for your support of the club. While dinners, events and tournaments might have looked different, the participation numbers have been great. We have gotten creative while still trying to put on fun and safe events for all to enjoy. We even hosted our first Pickleball Tournament with 100 people participating. We have some exciting and fun events planned for November and December including: Live Music at the Pool, Annual Chili Cook-Off, Pictures with Santa and the Polar Express to name a few. Our traditional Thanksgiving Buffet will now be Thanksgiving To GO. New Year's Eve will look a little different than last year but will be a wonderful dining experience. While we have no idea what will happen with Covid-19, we do look forward to getting somewhat back to normal in 2021. In the meantime, be well and be safe. Wishing you and your family a safe and happy Holiday Season. As always, your support of the club is greatly appreciated. Michael Thomas, Club Manager LOOKING BACK ON 2020

On October 6th, our Wakefield Senior Men's Golf Association (WSMG) hosted their 8th Annual WE CARE Golf Tournament. This year's event raised $85,000 pushing the 8 year total raised to $620,000! These funds go to several Military Charities across the State. An incredible event and day for us to say THANK YOU to the men and women who are protecting our Great State and Country!

MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff for executing a fantastic fall season. Normally Monday is a day our team can rest a little but it seemed like we were hosting a charity event every week. Charity events this past fall included the We Care Golf Classic raising money for the North Carolina military, Frankie Lemmon Golf Classic supporting Frankie Lemmon School & Developmental Center, and the Els for Autism Golf Challenge supporting the Els For Autism Foundation to name a few. All were for a great cause but could not have been done with out the long hours put in from our staff. We have some great events on the calendar for you including Halloween Movie Night with Food Trucks October 30th, Live Music at the Pool (adult only) November 6th, Chili Cook Off November 21st, Dog Fashion Show November 29th, Pictures with Santa December 6th and Polar Express December 16th. I hope to see you there. Until then, please welcome our newest members! FROST DELAYS With cooler weather here and cold weather fast approaching, it's only a matter of time before we have those dreaded frost delays. Frost affects higher-cut grass first and the shortest cut last due to height of the leaf tip from the ground. This means the greens will be the last areas on the course to frost due to being protected from the warmth of the ground.

Bermudagrass, a warm season grass grown on the tees, fairways, and roughs, will shut down and go dormant because of the frost and cold temperatures. The greens, however, have bentgrass on them which is a cool season grass and does not go dormant. Therefore, we have to be very careful not to walk on them when there is frost. So what is the big deal? What kind of damage could a little ice do? Well, the proof is in the prints. In 48 to 72 hours after a person walks on a frosted green, brown footprints will appear where the turfgrass has been damaged. Greens are very fragile; each green is a collection of millions of delicate grass plants. Frost is frozen dew that forms as the temperature drops to or below freezing. Ice crystals form and freeze the cell structure of the plant. When frosted, the plant's normally resilient cell structure becomes brittle and can be easily crushed. The cell membranes that are damaged lose their ability to function. It is like cracking an egg, once the shell is broken you can't put it back together! If it gets cold enough to freeze the ground, walking on frosted or frozen greens will not only crush plant cells but will also sever roots just below the surface. The effects from this root damage will not be evident until spring. A short delay while the frost melts will preserve the quality of our greens for the winter and spring. November Cookie of the Month: Bourbon Chocolate Sugar Cookie I Bruce McIntosh - Country Club of Asheville Ingredients: 1 ¾ Cup All-Purpose Flour ¾ Cup Dutch Process Cocoa Powder, sifted ½ TSP Baking Soda ¼ TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Kosher Salt ½ Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature ½ Cup(8 tablespoons) Unflavored Vegetable Shortening, room temperature 1 Cup Granulated Sugar ¾ Cup Packed Light Brown Sugar 1 Large Egg 1 Large Egg Yolk 3 TBSP Bourbon (optional, replace with 1 TBSP Vanilla Extract) 3 OZ. grated or very finely chopped dark or Semisweet Chocolate 1 Cup Raw/Turbinado Sugar 2 TSP Bourbon Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter until no longer chunky. Add shortening and beat on medium-high speed until smooth and uniformly mixed. Add sugar and brown sugar and beat for 1 to 2 minutes until light and fluffy. Add egg and egg yolk and mix until incorporated; scrape down the sides of the bowl and the beater as necessary. Slowly mix in bourbon. Add dry ingredients in two additions, mixing on low speed until just incorporated. Mix in finely chopped chocolate. If your dough is particularly soft you can refrigerate it for 10 to 15 minutes or so to make it easier to roll. To make bourbon sugar, combine raw sugar and 2 teaspoons bourbon in a pint-sized mason jar. Screw on lid and shake the heck out of it, until sugar is evenly moistened and looks something like wet sand. Pour into a shallow bowl or dish. Scoop dough into 1 3/4-inch balls (the size of a medium cookie scoop). Roll into a smooth ball, then roll into bourbon sugar until evenly coated (the moist sugar will clump, but that’s the effect we’re going for!) Arrange on parchment lined cookie sheets leaving approximately 2 inches of space between cookies. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until cookies have settled into shallow domes. They will be set around the edges but still puffed in the middle (they will flatten when they cool). Let cool on pan for 10 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. To store, spread any leftover bourbon sugar in the bottom of an airtight storage container; arrange cookies in layers on top and tightly cover. Cookies will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days.

DINING EVENTS & INFORMATION I am so glad that I can finally say this, HAPPY FALL & WINTER YA'LL! I don't know about you but I am welcoming the colder weather, pumpkin spice lattes and comfy sweaters! With all that being said, we have really kicked off our fall and winter season with some great events here at the club. Our annual Bourbon, Bushels & BBQ went off with a bang to start our season out with delicious food and great music. We do appreciate all the membership making that event such a huge success. With this year being the 20th Anniversary of The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation, we did things a little different this year. As you all know in lieu of doing our normal member guest tournaments we decided to do a Member 20th Anniversary Invitational this year. The tournament went off with great success, and we hope all members who participated enjoyed themselves. With the holidays right around the corner we are putting together a few member events for all to enjoy. This year we will be doing Thanksgiving a little differently and doing Curbside Pick-Up of a full Thanksgiving Family Meal similar to what we did for Easter and Mother's Day, so keep an eye out for the menu. It has been a wild ride for everyone that was scheduled to get married in 2020, and we picked up quite a few last minute weddings here at the club with venues closing, dates changing and rules up in the air. I have worked with some amazing couples this year who have been truly grateful that we were able to pull off their special days' even with all the crazy restrictions. I know we are all ready to see just what the New Year has in store for us after a hectic 2020! As always, please reach out to me for any and all of your catering and event needs hear at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation! Courtney Tatum, Director of Catering & Events

In spite of the many challenges that we have faced this year the Wakefield tennis courts have brought joy and a sense of distraction from the world around us. As we look to close out this year we still have several offerings that we hope our membership will enjoy. On the junior side of the court Wakefield will once again play host to a NC L-5 state championship the weekend of November 14th. These tournaments are a great way for the juniors of Wakefield to compete on their home turf against other players from around the state. This is also a great opportunity for our parents as most weekends they are driving to Greensboro, Charlotte and other locations for their children to play competitive tennis. This is a win/win for our juniors and parents as players still get to compete and score points toward their state rankings while parents get to sleep in their own beds at night. We hope you will register your player to take part in this final tournament of the year.

As many of your know Wakefield is not the pickleball capital of the world. In all seriousness Coach Andrew has done a tremendous job at offering and growing pickleball at our club. This fall we had 100 players register to compete in our inaugural PB league. We have decided it would only be right to end this year with a PB Club Championship. More details will be coming out soon but we are looking to put this tournament on the first weekend of December. As 2020 comes to an end the tennis shop would like to thank all of our members for coming out and supporting the program through these unprecedented times. We are very excited about our tennis and pickleball programs in 2021 and cannot wait to share what we have in store for the membership of Wakefield Plantation.

TEE IT UP As we move into the last few months of 2020, I think we can all say that we are looking forward to closing out the year and moving on to 2021. One positive that we have seen at Wakefield Plantation is unprecedented rounds and usage of the golf facilities. Golf has been a great escape for many of our members. The golf course is in wonderful shape so make sure to get in your last few rounds this year. The 20th Anniversary Golf Tournament was a huge success and we enjoyed a weekend full of great weather and fun competition. I appreciate the 132 members that played helping us celebrate the clubs first 20 years and we look forward to the next 20 years. The WSMGA once again hosted the WE CARE Tournament on October 6th at Wakefield Plantation. Although the tournament made some adjustments due to Covid-19, the seniors and volunteers did a wonderful job and raised a tremendous amount of money for our military. This event is one of the many ways that the WSMGA gives back to our community. The Annual Balloon Sale in the golf shop will change to a multiday event on the weekend of December 5th and 6th from 8am-5pm. We will have complimentary gift wrapping available for any purchases made in the golf shop during the holiday season, so make sure to keep us in mind when shopping! During the sale we will offer 15%-50% off all Men's and Women's Apparel and 15% off all Clubs, Balls, Shoes, Bags and Accessories. This is a great opportunity to use any remaining golf shop credit that was earned during the 2020 season as it will expire on December 31st. There are still plenty of great fall days ahead. We will have the Turkey Shoot Tournament on Friday after Thanksgiving so make sure to mark your calendar! If I can assist you in anyway please don't hesitate to reach out, my door is always open. Adam McLaughlin, PGA, Director of Golf

Congratulations to Payton Schmitt for breaking the course record from the Red Tee Markers! Payton shot a bogey free 61 on September 5th. He has an amazing stretch of golf with 4 Hole in Ones in the past 15 months to go along with his amazing record breaking round!
