CLUB NEWS The Month of November is a constant reminder that we have so much to be thankful for. On Veterans Day, we salute the men and women who have served and who are currently serving our great country. On Thanksgiving Day, we celebrate family, friends along with all the other blessings in our lives. For me personally, both of my children were born in the month of November. In this crazy world we live in these days, I would like to thank our members and our staff. We have asked a great deal of you to adjust for everyone's safety during these last 20 months. Let's keep being smart and diligent as we head into the winter months. Please be on the lookout for some great events coming in the months of November and December including: our Annual Chili Cook-Off, our 10th Anniversary McConnell Golf Celebration, Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Santa Breakfast and Brunch, Polar Express and our New Year's Eve Celebration.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued support of the club. Wishing you and your families a safe and wonderful holiday season! Michael Thomas, Club Manager

On October 5th, our Wakefield Senior Men's Golf Association (WSMGA) hosted their 9th Annual WE CARE Golf Tournament. This year's event raised $85,000 pushing the 9 year total raised to $700,000!! These funds go to several Military Charities across the state. An incredible event and day for us to say THANK YOU to the men and women who are protecting our Great State and Country!

FROST DELAYS

With cooler weather here and cold weather fast approaching, it's only a matter of time before we have those dreaded frost delays. Frost affects higher-cut grass first and the shortest cut last due to height of the leaf tip from the ground. This means the greens will be the last areas on the course to frost due to being protected from the warmth of the ground. Bermudagrass, a warm season grass grown on the tees, fairways and roughs, will shut down and go dormant because of the frost and cold temperatures. The greens, however, have bentgrass on them which is a cool season grass and does not go dormant. Therefore, we have to be very careful not to walk on them when there is frost. So what is the big deal? What kind of damage could a little ice do? Well, the proof is in the prints. In 48 to 72 hours after a person walks on a frosted green, brown footprints will appear where the turfgrass has been damaged. Greens are very fragile; each green is a collection of millions of delicate grass plants. Frost is frozen dew that forms as the temperature drops to or below freezing. Ice crystals form and freeze the cell structure of the plant. When frosted, the plant's normally resilient cell structure becomes brittle and can be easily crushed. The cell membranes that are damaged lose their ability to function. It is like cracking an egg, once the shell is broken you can't put it back together! If it gets cold enough to freeze the ground, walking on frosted or frozen greens will not only crush plant cells but will also sever roots just below the surface. The effects from this root damage will not be evident until spring. A short delay while the frost melts will preserve the quality of our greens for the winter and spring. November Cookie of the Month ~ Molasses Cookies Kenric Hunt - Brook Valley Country Club This cookie has been one of my own favorites to buy (Famous Amos) molasses cookies. My very first job was working at Piggly Wiggly where a portion of my check went to buying cookies. Also the taste of them reminds me of time spent with my father as we would eat them often after dinner or for a snack! Ingredients 2 1/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour (spoon & leveled) 1 ½ TSP Baking Soda 2 TSP Ground Ginger 1 ¼ TSP Ground Cinnamon 1/4 TSP Ground Cloves 1/4 TSP Nutmeg 1/4 TSP Salt 3/4 Cup Unsalted Butter, softened to room temperature 1/2 Cup packed Light or Dark Brown Sugar 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/4 Cup Unsulfured or Dark Molasses 1 Large Egg, at room temperature 2 TSP Pure Vanilla Extract 1/3 Cup Granulated or Coarse Sugar, for rolling

Instructions Whisk the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt together until combined. Set aside. In a large bowl using a hand-held or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and both sugars together on high speed until creamy and combined, about 2 minutes. Add the molasses and beat until combined. Then add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. On low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined. The cookie dough will be slightly sticky. Cover dough tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour and up to 2 to 3 days. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. (Always recommended for cookies.) Set aside. Remove cookie dough from the refrigerator. If the cookie dough is chilled longer than 2 hours, let it sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. The cookies may not spread in the oven if the dough is too cold. Roll cookie dough, 1 Tablespoon each, into balls. Roll each in granulated sugar and arrange 3 inches apart on the baking sheets. Bake for 11 to 12 minutes or until edges appear set. If the tops aren’t appearing cracked as pictured, remove the baking sheet from the oven and gently bang it on the counter 2 to 3 times. This will help the warm cookies spread out and crack on top. Return to the oven for 1 additional minute. Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Cookies will stay fresh covered at room temperature for 1 week.

TENNIS TIME It has been an incredible fall season around the tennis courts. Both junior and adult programs continue to grow and we are currently in one of the biggest league seasons in the history of the program. Our continued success is owned greatly to our passionate players and the hard working professional staff. We can't wait to raise the bar again in 2022. Before I talk about the fall leagues I would like to send out a congratulations to the Lav 7.0 summer Mixed Doubles team. This team fought their tails off all season and captured a city title and qualified to compete in the State Championships in Ashville this past September. The team battled it out and made it all the way to the finals where they fell a little short losing 1-2 to a team out of Lake Norman. This was an incredible accomplishment and the entire Wakefield tennis program is proud of them. Now time to talk about some fall tennis and possibly one of the most successful regular seasons our program has ever had. Currently as I am writing this newsletter we have seven...I repeat seven teams in the local playoffs trying to

punch their ticket to states. I cannot even begin to tell you how incredible this is. In the scheme of Raleigh tennis Wakefield's tennis program is considerably smaller than a lot of our competition. This is mainly due to the fact that we are a private country club where only members are allowed to compete on our teams. Many of the other programs around town are public or are racquet clubs so their pool of players is much greater. Our success in league play over the last several years and especially now speaks for itself as far as quality and level of play is concerned. We are not the biggest program in the city but we are proving to be one of the best. LET'S GO WP! As we move into the last months of the year we still have some fun offerings that you can get involved in. Most notably is the Pickle Ball Club Championships that will now take place on Saturday, December 4th. Both the ladies and gentleman will compete on the same day to crown our yearly champions. We will have a food truck and the full bar set up, so even if you don't play it will be a fun tournament to come out and watch. As always if there is anything that we can help you with, from dusting off old racquets to signing up on teams please do not hesitate to come visit us down at the tennis shop. From the entire tennis staff wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season. We hope to see you on the courts soon!

TEE IT UP As we close the books on the 2021 golf season, we want to thank the membership at The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation for the continued support of the club and our golf operations this year. During the past couple of chaotic years, golf has been an excellent avenue to escape for many of our members. Our club golf tournaments and instructional programming have seen record participation. We have been fortunate to host the largest Bob Bidwell Senior Member-Guest and Member-Member Tournaments in the past couple of months in the club's history. These events were well received and showcased our fantastic club and golf course. The WSMGA hosted the 9th Annual WE CARE golf tournament on October 5th. The tournament was a huge success. The WSMGA has used this fundraising tournament to donate over $800k to support our troops. This year the golf shop will be hosting our Annual Balloon Sale on Saturday, December 4th from 3:00pm-7:00pm. Stop by and enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres while you shop. We will have complimentary gift wrapping available for any purchase made in the golf shop during the holiday season, so make sure to keep us in mind when shopping! We will offer 15%-50% off all Men's and Women's Apparel during the sale and 15% off all Clubs, Balls, Shoes, Bags and Accessories. This is an excellent opportunity to use any remaining golf shop credit earned during the 2021 season, as it will expire on December 31st. We are currently working on the 2022 club tournament and golf course maintenance schedules. We anticipate an excellent golf schedule for next year and will inform the membership as soon as the schedule is finalized! There are still plenty of wonderful fall golf days ahead. We will have the Turkey Shoot Tournament on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so make sure to mark your calendar! If I can assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out, as my door is always open! Adam McLaughlin, PGA, Director of Golf
