CLUB NEWS On August 9, I was sitting in my living room when the whole house started shaking from an Earthquake. Ironically enough, early in that week I was in a house at the beach that was shaking all night from winds from Tropical Storm Isaias. The day before the Earthquake, we took our daughter on a college campus tour of a school that she is interested in attending next Fall. Wow as reality set in! The day before that, we canceled the Ladies, the Men’s and the Senior Men’s Member Guests for the first time ever due to covid-19. I thought what a strange week it has been. While our houses and our world around us might be shaking, I truly believe everything is going to be alright. I look around and marvel at our adjustments and creativity needed to deal with all that is going on around us. No more Wednesday Night Buffets but Fried Chicken Night is pretty special every other Wednesday Night. The pool will now be open two weeks longer through September 27. No more tournament shotgun starts but tee times in my opinion make a better golf experience for tournaments. With more time on their hands, a group of members have started a Pickleball phenomenon. I never thought a virtual wine tasting would work but it was a lot of fun. Tons more families playing golf and tennis together just to get outside. It goes without saying, we look forward to being back to normal one day but for now we shall continue to adapt and adjust to whatever is thrown our way. We greatly appreciate your flexibility and your support of the club. Be well, be safe and thank you! Michael Thomas, Club Manager

MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, It is hard to believe Summer has already passed and the Fall season is upon us. We are excited to extend your pool season a little longer this year through September 27th. We hope you continue to join us at the pool which has been a haven during this pandemic. As many of you know, Raleigh Country Club’s course renovation is expected to be open by October 1st. Hopefully this date comes sooner so their members stop taking up our tee times! Joking aside, I encourage you to take advantage of your membership and go play there at least once this Fall. The property is very impressive as golf course designer Kyle Franz did a remarkable job. Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can assist with. If you have a friend, neighbor, or colleague interested in joining The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation please let me know. Until then please welcome our newest members! FALL FERTILIZATION Why fertilize fairways and roughs when the bermudagrass is starting to go dormant? This late fertilization is done for a couple of reasons: in September, as we get some cool nights and the days get shorter, the top portion of the bermudagrass plant slows down its growth. The roots, however, are still growing as long as soil temperatures are above fifty degrees. This is when we make our fall fertilizer application; so we don't get any top growth and all of the nutrients absorbed can be stored in the plant. The nutrients then help build a stronger root system and any unused nutrients are stored over the winter. When ground temperatures fall below fifty degrees, root growth stops. The nutrients that were stored will then be used in the spring when the plant begins to green up. With a stronger healthier root system, the plant has a better chance of surviving long periods of freezing temperatures without damage. Then, as spring arrives, and the plant begins to green up, the nutrients in reserve will be used for plant growth before soil temperatures are warm enough for root growth. Then, as temperatures get hot, and the bermudagrass is growing, we fertilize again to push growth for the summer. Todd Lawrence, Golf Course Superintendent

DINING EVENTS & INFORMATION What a fun and HOT summer we had here at Wakefield Plantation! Natalie kept the fun going down at the pool even longer this year so everyone could still enjoy themselves just a little longer before fall begins to creep up as it does each year. In light of all the challenges that we as a whole have faced since early March, we cannot thank you all enough for all the strong and continued support that each and every one of you have shown us here at Wakefield Plantation. Without our loyal members, we are nothing, and it’s been my pleasure taking this crazy ride with you all during the uncertain times we’ve faced. With this year being our 20th anniversary as a club, we truly sought out to make all of our members feel appreciated for being a part of this family! Myself and all of our team have come up with some great events for this fall! October Cookie of the Month: “Gluten-Free Cornmeal Thumbprint Cookies” Michael Monahan – Grande Dunes
A startling number of people these days are reporting gluten sensitivities, and gluten-free baking has become a “subset” of baking. I love the flavor and texture of these tender gluten-free cornmeal-based cookies, and the way the raspberry flavor complements the corn. Yield: 3 dozen “Bite sized” cookies Ingredients: 1 ½ Cups All-Purpose Gluten-Free Rice Flour 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal 1 TSP Baking Powder ½ TSP Table Salt 1 ¾ sticks Unsalted Butter, softened, plus more for pans ¾ Cup Firmly Packed Light-Brown Sugar 2 Large Eggs 1 TSP Vanilla Extract ½ Cup Seedless Raspberry Preserves (or jelly of your choice) Directions: Preheat your oven to 350° and set 2 racks to the middle positions, with space in between. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (or grease lightly with butter) In a medium-size bowl, whisk together the rice flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. Using a standing or handheld mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar in a large bowl until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Portion the dough into 1inch balls, and arrange them 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. Press each with your thumb; then fill each depression with a teaspoon of raspberry jam. Bake until just barely golden brown on the bottom, 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through.

TENNIS TIME We are very excited for a break in the heat as we move into the fall months. Like everything else in the world around us, this fall will not be what we are accustomed to. At the current time it is looking as though our local league USTA seasons will be put on hold. While we know this will be a huge disappointment to our players we are prepared to offer a full array of clinics, in house leagues as well as tournaments for our members to take part in. During the month of September we will have two league offerings for our members to participate in. The first league offering will be for the ladies on Wednesday mornings. Matches will be scheduled by the pro shop each week with play taking place at 9:30am. This is a great opportunity for players to keep their games sharp in a fun stress free environment. To cap off the season all of the players will be invited to attend a league lunch that will take place at the tennis center.
The second league offering in September will be our first ever Pickle Ball league. Pickle Ball has really taken off here at Wakefield Plantation under the direction of our PB guru Andrew Hodges and we are excited to see how this first seasons plays out. The Pickle Ball league will be played in two Divisions, a Ladies Division and a Men’s Division. Match times will be flexible allowing for both morning and evening play. At the end of the season we will get all of our players together for a player’s party and to crown our champions. For more information on the Pickle Ball league or our ladies morning tennis league please call the tennis pro shop 919-488-1930. The fun will continue into October as the tournaments begin! Please be sure to sign up for our Ladies Club Championship as well as our Men’s Club Championship. Both Championships will be played over several weeks with the finals taking place on a Friday evening in October at the player’s party (TBD). Also being played in October will be the USTA L-5 junior tournament. This tournament is a great opportunity for our players to get out and compete against the local competition. To prepare your kids for this tournament make sure that they are active in our weekly clinics. For any questions please do not hesitate to give us a call in the pro shop 919-488-1930. While this may not be the fall that we are used to, our staff is committed to keeping our members safe and active on the tennis courts. We hope that you enjoy these offerings and we look forward to seeing everyone on the courts! Kyle Thortsen, Corporate Director of Tennis

TEE IT UP We can all look forward to the cooler fall weather as the dog days of summer are behind us. The fall season is my favorite time of the year to play golf. During the next couple months the greens will become faster and the golf course will be in the best shape of the year. Covid-19 has certainly provided challenges for us all and the golf staff appreciates the continued support. Hopefully we have flattened the curve and will get back to some normalcy in the near future.
In the past few months we have hosted some successful tournaments for our membership. The Red, White and Blue Tournament and Member-Member Tournament provided some friendly competition for the membership during the month of July. Although we had to make some changes to formats and social aspects of the tournaments, the overall feedback from those who participated was positive. Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Bob Bidwell Senior Member-Guest, Ladies Azalea Member-Guest, and Tuscarora MemberGuest all of which were scheduled in September and October. Taking into consideration the current phase two mandates for social gatherings, risk for our membership and employees with guest traveling from various areas of the country, and the inability to conduct quality events that showcase our club the Wakefield team decided to cancel these events. The tournaments will be back on the schedule for 2021 and will be better than ever! Please make note of the adjustments to the tournament schedule for the upcoming months. The Ladies Challenge Cup has been rescheduled to Saturday, September 19th. We will host all of the Club Championships (Men, Senior Men, Ladies, & Junior) on the weekend of October 17th and 18th. The club is excited to host the Wakefield Plantation 20th Anniversary Golf Tournament on October 3rd and 4th. The 20th Anniversary Golf Tournament will be an excellent way for the members to celebrate this terrific milestone for our club. The golf staff and I are looking forward to a great fall season. As always, if I can assist you in anyway, please don’t hesitate to reach out; my door is always open! Adam McLaughlin, PGA, Director of Golf

The membership as a whole has done an excellent job following the cart rules on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we still have a small percentage of the membership who are not adhering to the cart rules. Please use this as a friendly reminder to everyone, adhere to the cart rules. We should adhere to the rules daily, especially on days when Todd allows us to use the 90 degree rule. This will ensure that the golf course conditions remain at the high standard that we pride ourselves on. Cart Rules for The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation

MCCONNELL GOLF NEWS JIM HERMAN WINS THIRD TITLE AT WYNDHAM; MOVES FROM 192ND TO 54TH IN FEDEXCUP POINTS
Herman had two birdies and an eagle — from 59 feet — on his first five holes to catch up to Kim. Then, trailing Horschel by a stroke, Herman stuck his approach to No. 17 to just over 3 feet for a birdie. to reach 21 under. He gained the lead when Horschel missed a 12-footer for par on 16.
Jim Herman rallied to win the Wyndham Championship on Sunday for his third PGA TOUR title and a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs, shooting a 7under 63 for a one-stroke victory over Billy Horshel. Herman overcame a four-stroke deficit in the final round at Sedgefield Country Club. He overtook Horschel with a birdie on the 71st hole. The 42-year-old Herman finished at 21-under 259. Horschel closed with a 65. He had a final chance to tie on the 72nd hole, but his 8-foot birdie putt slid left of the cup. Herman got into the FedExCup Playoffs, jumping from 192nd to 54th in the race for the 125 spots. He hoisted a trophy for the second straight season and third time since 2017. Si Woo Kim, the third-round leader, had a 70 to tie for third at 18 under with Kevin Kisner (64), Webb Simpson (65) and Doc Redman (68).
It was quite a week for Herman, who had three birdies over his final four holes Friday simply to make the cut. He followed that up with a careerlow 61 on Saturday to get into striking distance before taking the victory. Horschel looked as if he was the one to rally as he moved from three behind Kim to the lead with a birdie-eagle- birdie run on the front nine while Kim struggled with a double bogey and a bogey over his first eight holes. Kim was a birdie machine with 21 birdies and a hole in one the first three rounds. But he stumbled out of the gate and a pair of bad drives cost him his first win since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2017. He drove right into a hazzard of thick grass and, despite six people searching, could not find his shot. Kim made double bogey to fall from the top. Two holes later, Kim would up near a cart path bridge for a bogey to fall four shots off the lead.
FOOTPRINTS ON THE GREEN PROGRAM As the host for many charities and donors to numerous others, McConnell Golf is excited to contribute and engage through our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. Through a strong and supportive effort made by our collective membership and staff, we strive to become a driving force in the local community where our clubs reside. Aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily, we have aligned ourselves with a variety of organizations and various methods of giving back. This program is designed with all age groups in mind so that it will be a learning tool for our youth, a team building activity for our staff, and a friendship building platform to strengthen our connection with our membership. Recently, the Country Club of Asheville raised over $2,800 for United Way School Supply Drive. Providence Country Club is also taking part in supporting our local schools with a supply drive sponsored by Classroom Central. Way to go team and thank you to all who contributed!
