CLUB UPDATES
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a happy holiday season and enjoyed time with family and friends. The employees were very thankful for your kind donation towards their holiday bonus. I thank you for making their Christmas better. With the new year starting, new and exciting things are happening at Wilson Country Club. The compliments over the holiday season from members and guests about the recent upstairs renovations have been numerous. The renovations downstairs are well underway. The projected timeline is the first week in March for the competition. I believe you will be very pleased with the new locker rooms and Grover’s. I will continue to keep you updated on the progress. During this time, all meals are prepared and served upstairs. The Club Room is acting as Grover’s as well. We have hot dogs and pre-made sandwiches for those in a hurry at the turn as well as a full menu for your enjoyment. Orange cones have been placed in the front of the clubhouse for a golf cart parking area. Please, park carts inside of the cones when stopping to pick up beverages, food, etc. Socially, we have some new events planned for your enjoyment. This month we have a Cross-Country Golf event followed by pizza and wings. After golf, stay around and watch the NFL divisional playoff game. The birthday dinner night starts this month on the 11th. If you have a birthday in January, you will get your dinner buffet free this evening. A minimal cost will be for everyone else. Reservations are required by Tuesday the 9th to help plan accordingly. Next month’s birthday night is scheduled for February 1st. Please look out for more details as both get closer. Valentine’s dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, February 14th. Please make reservations early to guarantee seating. The chef is preparing a special limited menu for this evening. Wine Down Wednesday will not take place to accommodate the expected number of members. Reid has placed orders for new merchandise, which should arrive soon. On another note, this time of year we do have weather delays. Please be mindful of this when making tee times. Your patience is appreciated. Craig and his staff have removed a few trees from the course and clubhouse grounds and some trees were trimmed. The view from the clubhouse over the lake has improved even more with this work. I can't wait to see what it will look like after winter, when we have green grass and leaves. As tennis players know, this time of year is questionable for playing on clay courts with freezing temperatures. The hard courts will remain open for play when ice is not on them. We do experience this sometimes in the early morning after a rain. As you can see, a lot is happening. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or suggestions on how to make things better for your experience here at WCC. Best Regards, Isaac B. Davis Sr., CCM General Manager THE WILSON WIRE

TURF TALK
I hope that you all had a wonderful Holiday season and were able to spend time with your family! The crew and I have been hard at work both with limbing trees up throughout the course and with cutting trees down. Michael Shumaker headed up the limbing project and has done an outstanding job with that. We are mostly done with it and the results are impressive, especially in certain areas. I’m sure that most of you have noticed that quite a few trees were removed between the putting green, 18 green, and the pool. If you remember a year ago, we had a hard freeze for several days during Christmas. The putting green stayed closed for 2 days longer than the rest of the course because it was still frozen. The shade from the trees that were removed is what caused the soil temperatures to be so far below the rest of the greens on the course. While these trees were impressive, they were having a negative impact on the health of the grass and therefore we needed to make this change. While working on the tree removal at the putting green it became quite apparent that the oaks around the 18th green and the putting green needed to be limbed. We hired a contractor to climb up and thin the canopy of the oak trees. They also removed one oak that was located near the pool fence to improve both the view of 18 Fairway from the clubhouse as well as the shade issues on the putting green during the early morning hours. I must say the view from the club room is quite impressive now. The 18th fairway can be seen as well as the tee box. There is even some view of 13 Fairway as well. The other area that we worked on was 12 tee. We removed 3 trees between the white tee and the start of the fairway. This opened up the tee box and improved the playability of that hole. Aside from these areas, the trees that were cut had died over the course of the past year. We will be working on edging the beds around the course and the clubhouse soon. Sometime after the first of the year we will grind the stumps and begin sodding those areas that need it. I hope to see each of you around the course soon! Regards, Craig Clemmer Wilson Country Club Superintendent

COOKIES OF THE MONTH JANUARY: GINGERSNAP COOKIE BY LYNN HART, PASTRY CHEF AT RALEIGH CC "When I was 37 years old, I went back to school to get a culinary degree. This was one of the first things I baked at Trails End. More than twentyfive years later, it is still one of my favorite cookie recipes. Whenever I make them, I think of Gary Henz and the incredible opportunities I have received because of the strong foundation he laid for me."

FEBRUARY: PEANUT BUTTER HEART COOKIE BY DYRIEK SHAW, SOUS CHEF AT TREYBURN CC “Reese’s cups have always held a special place in my heart. It’s one of those things that when I eat them, they teleport me through many happy memories. One of which involved my grandmother giving me my first one when I was a child. Since then, they have always made me think of her. This is where my love for peanut butter and chocolate can come together, as I’ve created a peanut butter press cookie with a Reese’s cup melted in the center. Who doesn’t love these two ingredients together? And as she would say, “bless your heart.”
