CLUB NEWS

A NOTE FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER Later this month, I will begin my 18th year here at Wakefield Plantation. Crazy to think about all that has gone on during that time period. I have been blessed to work with some wonderful staff members over the years. Believe it or not, three current staff members have been here longer than I have and they all three work in the same department. They are Todd Lawrence, Roy Tapia and Andy Watt. All three call golf course maintenance their home. All three have been there since we opened in July of 2000. This summer the club will celebrate its 20th Anniversary. I did a quick count and we have 45 golf member families and 1 social member family that have been here since the very beginning. Please bear in mind, the sports club did not open until summer of 2001. It has been a lot of fun to go back and look at some of the old pictures and newsletters. Over the next several months, I will be taking a walk down memory lane as we approach our 20th Anniversary Milestone. Please mark your calendars for May 25- May 31 as the Korn Ferry Tour Rex Hospital Open returns to The Country Club at Wakefield Plantation. As always your support of the club is greatly appreciated.

-Michael Thomas, Club Manager CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2019 EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR ~ ANDY WATT For the last 19 almost 20 years, Andy Watt has been working down at the maintenance facility taking care of all of the golf course maintenance equipment. He started two weeks before the club opened in 2000 and has played an integral part of the clubs success ever since. No task is too small as he is quick to offer help in anyway. His attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond for all departments across the club is pretty special. He is always smiling and has the best attitude. We are so fortunate to have Andy as a part of our team. Please join me in congratulating Andy Watt as our 2019 Employee of the Year for the Country Club at Wakefield Plantation.

THE REX HOSPITAL OPEN RETURNS MAY 28-31, 2020 If you live near Wakefield Plantation and would like to host a professional golfer during the tournament please email Alyssa Newton and Christine Perkins for information at: rexopenhousing@yahoo.com Volunteers needed! It takes over 400 volunteers each year to make our event one of the best on any TOUR. Join our amazing team and show your McConnell Golf pride. Many fun jobs are still available and golf knowledge is not required. Volunteers make it possible for us to give to charity and we raised over $500,000 last year alone! For more information or to register visit: rexhospitalopen.com Sponsorship opportunities are still available. If you would like to entertain clients in our #18 Skybox, play in our Wednesday Pro-Am presented by Stitch or showcase your brand during the tournament please contact Sponsorship Director, Kevin Bender, for more information: kevin.bender@unchealth.unc.edu Thank you and we hope to see you in May!

DEAR MEMBERS Just like that, winter has passed and we are already enjoying warmer weather. We have an exciting spring ahead of us especially for our kids with the Operation 36 Junior Golf Program, Junior Tennis, and the Wakefield Tsunami’s Swim Team who are back to back league champs! Be on the lookout for early registration opportunities and meet the coaches. Mark your calendars for Raleigh’s only PGA event, The Rex Hospital Open, hosted here at Wakefield Plantation May 28th – May 31st. Like in years past, each membership receives two tickets which includes access to the clubhouse and our viewing platform on tournament 18. This year our members will have a much better viewing experience as our platform will be closer to and above the green on the hill. If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please go online to www.rexhospitalopen.com and register today. If you are interested in housing a professional golfer during the tournament, please email Alyssa Newton and Christine Perkins at rexopenhousing@yahoo.com. GREENS AERIFICATION Aerification! There’s that word that no one likes. Golfers despise it because it disrupts the putting surface, and the maintenance staff cringes because of the back-breaking work. But aerification is the very core to quality putting surfaces and a successful greens program, so let’s look at some of the benefits. Here at Wakefield Plantation, greens aerification is performed three times a year. Our normal schedule is 1/2 inch holes in early March, 3/8 inch holes early June and 1/2 inch holes in late August. Each time we core aerify we are removing thatch and allowing the greens to exchange carbon dioxide and other gases for oxygen. Thatch is a layer of undecomposed and partially decomposed roots and stems located in the top 1 inch beneath the surface of the green. Healthy roots need oxygen and grow and function properly. If thatch is not controlled, the greens would become soft and spongy and this organic layer would eventually seal off the surface of the green. When this happens, too much water is retained in this layer and therefore deprives the roots of proper amounts of oxygen. Each year we take soil samples from our greens and have an independent lab test them to determine the percentage of organic matter. We then use this information to help develop our aerification and topdressing program for the next year. In the summer, you will see us also punch the greens with a small solid tine and not remove a core. This is done during periods of high heat and humidity coupled with too much rainfall. When the combination of these three conditions come together for extended periods, the greens need quick relief. Therefore, during the summer, we solid tine every three weeks to help the upper root zone stay dry and to enhance oxygen flow. The core aerification process is a necessary evil that no one enjoys. Golfers have to putt over holes for several weeks, and it creates more work for golf course maintenance. But aerification provides air to the roots, helps keep the surfaces dry and firm and gives us the opportunity to provide you with a tournament-quality putting surfaces throughout the year. Aerification Schedule 2020 March 16th & 17th June 8th – 11th August 24th & 25th

Oh how I welcome spring! This has always been my favorite time of year. A time for flowers blooming, to see the baby animals, and the chill to leave the air. It also means hot weather is just around the corner. We might consider getting a jump on bathing suit season and getting into the gym more often too. This spring we are going to offer Kids Yoga and perhaps a few other additions, so please check out our schedule and the Weekly Happenings for updates. I will be starting a new small personal training group as well, so please reach out to me as I gather input and ideas on times and days that are best for everyone. Whether you want to look good or be healthy, you'll get them both! Cheers and Namaste. -Heather Overington, Personal Trainer 919.649.3007 I baileyfunfitness@aol.com _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 0 WAYS TO CLEAN UP YOUR SPRING WOROUT ROUTINE You may like your regular workout, but if you’ve been following the same training patterns for too long, it’s likely the benefits you’re receiving from all of your efforts have decreased. Throw out the old and embrace the new, you’ll kick-start your metabolism and renew your fitness routine. Here are a few suggestions for doing just that. 1. Get Outside In Raleigh, we live in one of the best places in the country, if not the world, for outdoor activity. We even had a pretty mild winter (knock on wood) and not cashing in on the great weather seems like a travesty. You can still save this year’s beautiful weather by making the most of it and doing anything recreational or fitness related outside. 2. Add new strength training into the mix Many people fall into 2 groups: those who love to lift weights and those who prefer spending their time on the cardio machines. Whichever one you fall into, now might be the time to try the other arena. If you’re new to weight training, start simple. If you’re more of a lifter, start with 15 minutes of cardio and gradually increase your duration until you’re really pushing yourself. By trading time in one discipline for time in the other, you are not only going to shake things up but will have a more rounded routine. 3. Change your intervals Give a few new intervals a try. Switch more rapidly between cardio equipment, or simply choose a new course on your machine. There are thousands of intervals you can do daily depending on which machine you prefer. You may crush a plateau at the same time. 4. Change the duration It can also be effective to play around with how often and for how long you’re working out. One week, go for two to three long workouts. The next, opt for short, intense sessions. Then next, do something in-between. Experimenting in this way will keep your workouts from getting too predictable, and will constantly challenge your body in new ways. 5. Try a different time Always exercise in the afternoon or evening? Get up early a few times this week and be amazed at all that you can get done before your first cup of coffee. Getting creative with your schedule will keep your workout changing and interesting and your body will respond. 6. Mix it up with intramural sports An intramural sport or activity will force your muscles to move in new ways, distract you with mental challenges, and even help you make a few new friends. Soccer leagues, volleyball, running groups, and much more are all popular in our area. Enjoy yourself while also challenging yourself and embrace something entirely new. 7. Give a few new classes a try We offer a variety of classes throughout the year, with new schedules released for each month. If you’ve always wanted to try our yoga or Zumba classes, now might be the time. Our fitness instructors are good at what they do, and you’ll find working out with friends is motivating. 8. Sign up for a race If you enjoy running, swimming or biking on your own, enter a race. You’ll have new motivation when you know your morning jog will help you through that 5K or half marathon, and you’ll be extra likely to jump into your cold pool for a training session when you know it’s for a charity triathlon. 9. Commit to a friend or group of friends Spring is the perfect time to become a more social animal. A workout buddy is a great way to inject enthusiasm and accountability into your daily routine, while a group training class will keep that heart pumping via new and interesting means. 10. Hire a personal trainer When all else fails, come talk to one of our three personal trainers and let us handle all of the benefits to having someone else plan and implement your workouts. Having a trainer is not only educational, we incorporate a whole new level of accountability, and we will help you establish the correct routine for you. drewforshey@gmail.com I 828-244-1546

Much emphasis is placed on the breath and the transition in and out of the asanas. RESTORATIVE YOGA WITH HEATHER: Restorative yoga is a class to rest, reset and rejuvenate the body and mind. Try this class to improve everyday well-being but also great for the athlete looking to take their game to the next level. YIN YOGA/RESTORATIVE YOGA WITH GREG: Yin yoga uses poses that are relative simple to achieve and are held for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the individual to deepen their practice. This allows one to gain strength, flexibility, focus, and awareness of the breath. Most poses are not done standing, but are completed low to the mat; individuals are typically seated, supine or in a prone position. The group will be lead through a series of relaxing and opening poses allowing the mind to quieten, and their minds and connect deeply within themselves. Restorative poses incorporates yin yoga but with the aid of yoga props, such as bolsters, blocks, and straps. This allows people to relax and focus even further on their body and breath. At the end of the class the participants should feel at peace/calm, relaxed, stretched and centered. All ages and experienced levels are welcome to participate. ZUMBA WITH JOSE: “Zumba is a fusion of Latin and International music/dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting class, and based on the principle that a workout should be “FUN AND EASY TO DO”. After the run we are going to sit outback at the clubhouse, socialize and enjoy some drinks specials being offered! INTERVAL/CIRCUIT TRAINING WITH HEATHER: Heather’s interval/ circuit training is fast paced and is set up to challenge the muscles in a way that burns calories and builds strength. When you work the muscles in this way, the metabolism jump starts and the circulation increases. This will set the body to burn even more calories when doing other activities. The intervals are timed and the weight used is per person. This is a competition within ones self! YIN YOGA WITH HEATHER: Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures or asanas, that are held for longer periods of time-for beginners. It may range from 45 seconds to two minutes. YOGA ESSENTIALS WITH GREG: This class is accessible to all individuals wanting to further their yoga practice. Breath work, alignment, strength and focus are addressed through the entire class. TENNIS

Hello Spring! The weather is turning and we are ready for one of the busiest times of the year down at the tennis center. As usual our USTA adult and junior leagues are gearing up for the start of their seasons, with several teams looking to make a run at a city title and the chance to compete at the State Championship. In the coming months we have a lot of action that we want you to be a part of. To start the month of March off, the Wakefield Tennis pros will be hosting a free “Give Tennis a Shot” clinic with offerings for the entire family. These clinics will be held on March 5th from 4:30-7pm. Our goal with these fun free clinics is to introduce the entire family to the sport of tennis. If you have never played before this is your chance. Do not worry about racquets or equipment, we have plenty of demos for you to use, just come out and let’s have some fun! For the kids we will run three age specific clinics from 4:30-6pm followed by a men’s and women’s clinic from 6-7pm. For more details please look online or give the tennis shop a call. To wrap up the month of March Wakefield will be hosting a USTA L-5 junior tournament. In years past we have seen upwards of 80 juniors from around the tringle compete at this event. We love hosting these tournaments as many of our juniors travel all over the state to compete. Our kids train year round and put a lot of time into improving their game. By hosting these events our players and families are given a chance to compete in their own back yard and in sports we all know how nice it is to have home field advantage. Also at the end of March we will once again be partnering with the Special Olympics of NC. Many of you have helped us in the past with donating racquets or coming out to volunteer. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday March 31st. If you are around and want to volunteer or just hang out with us and have some fun please let us know. Our staff and this kids would love to have you out! For all my tennis players, save the date April 17th-18th for our singles Club Championship. This is going to be more of a party with some tennis on the side then a traditional by the book competitive tournament. Trust me you do not want to miss this! If you have any tennis needs or questions please do not hesitate to give us a call or stop by the shop for a visit. Our staff is one of the best around and we enjoy spending time every day with our members. We hope to see you on the court soon!
