COMMUNICATION

TELEPHONE TIPS Public Pay Phones Green/Gray Phones Large green or gray (international) phones can still be found off base and accept phone cards, ¥10 coins and ¥100 coins. Smaller green phones are usually located in open boxes and accept ¥10 coins. These phones have a small red box located above or to the side of the phone that’s used to dial two emergency numbers: 110 for the local police and 119 for the fire department and ambulance. These numbers can be called without depositing coins.

If you choose to use a mobile device, remember that it is against the law to use one while operating a motor vehicle both on and off base. If you are caught on your phone while driving, it could result in a heavy fine and the loss of your driver’s license. Hands-free phone operation, however, is legal.

Calling Home Social media has made keeping in touch easier, but it still can’t replace picking up a phone and hearing a loved-one’s voice on the line. No matter where you’re calling, there are various ways to do it. Rates can be kept very low by using phone cards, internet and smart phone applications.

Available Options Several options exist for long-distance telephone communication. From webcams and specialized websites to VoIP and prepaid phone cards usable on any on-base phone or cell phone, there are a myriad of choices to stay connected with friends and family back home. Carriers offer competitive rates for prepaid cards. For more information regarding web-based options, contact MBC at info@mediattimail.net, or visit them online at mbcokinawa.net.

Mobile Phones Several mobile phone companies, such as au KDDI, Softbank and Fad Tech, offer service to SOFA ID card holders and have outlets in Exchange concession malls on base. Fees vary based on the company, the type of services provided and the type of phone. Credit cards are required for customers who don’t have a Japanese bank account. Service is available month-to-month or discounted with a 2-year contract. Softbank and Fad Tech offer prepaid service with Fad Tech offering rental service for short-term options.
