Message from The director It’s October! Have you already picked out your Halloween costume? My daughter wants to be Vanellope von Schweets from Wreck It Ralph, which ultimately means that she wants me to accompany her as the movie’s protagonist- an overgrown, fictional video game character who likes to smash things into obliteration while having a heart of gold. I don’t really think I can pull of destructive-chic, but a good place to test out the coolness of my costume is at the Dead Dash 5K. I’d delve into the details of this event, but we actually make mention of it 3 more times in this issue of the Digital Hangar, so please read this issue in its entirety.

is “A Healthy Me is Drug Free.” See how the Drug Demand Reduction Program plans to support the fight against drugs on page 9. The first 100 people who attend National Food Day will receive a portion plate which have been sponsored by Be Better Health. education

Getting a return on your investment by JEssica Davis, M Ed., Education & Career Specialist

With today’s economy, it’s hard to find and trust a stable job/ career that will provide for you and your family’s needs. On top of job insecurity, nobody wants to add the stress of “college debt” to their lengthy list of bills and monthly expenditures. The Education Center has qualified Education and Career Specialists who want to help you

find a fulfilling college experience that doesn’t leave you with financial regrets. The Education Center offers personal and professional learning opportunities to the Marine Corps community that includes, but is not limited to; educational counseling, funding, informational briefs, and testing services. If you are planning to pursue a degree or certificate

program, it is recommended that you visit your Education Center for meaningful resources regarding career and education assistance; however, it is never too early to begin taking steps on your own to ensure that you get the best return on your investment.

Plan Carefully & Use Free Money There once was a time when you could work and pay your way through college, but with tuition rates increasing and a tough job market, a degree comes at a much higher cost. Often, those who dedicate valuable time and money to degree programs come out of them unemployed or underemployed. Here are some tips on how to start a smart career journey and land on your feet in the end. Map Your Future Use career exploration resources to guide your career choice based on personal skills, interests, and experience. Career Assessments such as Kuder Journey and O*NET Interest Profiling can assist with your career search and help to determine not only what fits your lifestyle preference but also what jobs have a positive future outlook in terms of job stability and pay. To obtain log-in information to the Career Assessment websites, please contact the Education Center. Once you’ve determined a career path, finding a college or university program that fits a Military lifestyle is not as difficult as it may seem. Do your homework! Find an institution that is part of the SOCMAR network. These colleges and universities are flexible with transfer credits, residency requirements, and often honor military learning for academic credit. Visit www.soc.aascu.org for more information. In addition to looking into the SOCMAR network, you can be economically proactive by determining what programs work around your schedule and by paying close attention to start and end dates of your degree program of interest. Check into free and neutral resources on career, education, financial aid, and money

management information . Money Matters Are you one of the millions of Americans that don’t bother filing for FREE Federal Financial Aid or apply for scholarships? Don’t assume that you make too much money to qualify for free grants or low interest rate loans or won’t qualify for a scholarship. Apply for Federal Financial Aid Military Service Members are considered independent students and do not need to report their parents’ income on the FAFSA. There is a good chance you may be entitled to free money that can be utilized for anything related to your education. Complete the free Application for Federal Student Aid by visiting www. fafsa.gov. Apply for Grants/ Scholarships Applying for grants and scholarships can be overwhelming with the uncertainty of validity and with literally millions available through the web. While this may be intimidating, don’t let it keep you from finding one that is attainable and appropriate. Why dip into your GI Bill Benefits earlier than necessary? Perhaps you would prefer to transfer your military benefits to a family member. If you want to extend your military benefits, search the varieties of funding that are offered through scholarship and grant money, and take advantage of a very underutilized supply of funds. FastWeb www.fastweb.com and Scholarships.com www.scholarships. com are reputable Internet Scholarship search services. In order to use this site, you must enter extensive information about yourself including age, mailing address, ethnicity, career objectives, academic

background, student activities, and your parents’ activities. The site then uses the data to generate personalized information on colleges, internships, jobs, and scholarships. For more information, please contact MCCS Yuma’s Education Center at (928)269-5614/3248/3589 during the hours of 0730-1600 Monday-Friday.

Tax Planning

by MARGY PRACCHIA, PErsonal Finance Manager

Starting January 1, 2014, every taxpayer will be gathering information and waiting for their W-2 from their employers. They will eagerly file their tax returns to recoup that “great, big refund”. Instead of a big “bonus check”, you should look at how can you can make more money all year long. First, you need to understand withholding exemptions (Form W-4) Withholding exemptions do not strictly pertain to the number of dependents and the personal exemption, though they are related. The number of withholding exemptions are a way for your payroll department to use tables provided by the IRS to figure out how much tax to withhold from each paycheck. The higher the number of exemptions, the less tax withheld, and the lower the number of exemptions, the more tax is withheld. If you end up with a big refund, you are allowing the Federal or State government to have more of your personal money throughout the year. When you receive

a refund from Federal or State, you do not receive interest on your money, but rather you are providing an interest-free loan to the government. On the other hand, you want to avoid a big tax payment at the end of the year. The best plan is to have your withholding amount match your tax liability as close as possible. Have your tax preparer prepare a W-4 Planner for you. With this W-4 Planner, you can adjust your withholding where you can pocket the money each payday, rather than receiving it as a refund with no interest. There are several other items individuals need to understand about preparation of taxes. If you would like to understand basic tax planning and strategies, attend the Tax Planning workshop offered by the Personal Financial Manager on October 24, 8-10am or October 30, 6-8pm at Bldg. 598. Reservations are required; call 269-2949 or 269-2425.

Who would not want to get scared mindless in the middle of the night at one of the country’s greatest theme parks? At the Halloween Horror Nights in California there are multiple mazes to run screaming through while chainsaw wielding clowns give chase starting September 20th. The Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights is a great experience but can be made even better with a few insider tips:

1. The tickets for the Halloween Horror Nights are a completely separate ticket from the normal Universal Studios tickets and parking is not included with the price of the HHN ticket. 2. Try to go during the first three weeks of the Halloween Horror Nights. While it is less seasonal,

SERVICES | 17

there are less people at the park. This means less waiting in lines for all of the rides and less crowds to deal with. 3. Try to eat before you get to the park. You won’t have to spend time trying to find a restaurant to eat at and you can skip the high prices of park food. Then you only need to worry about the monsters eating you! 4. There is an express pass available for purchase at the gate that will allow you to jump ahead in lines for around 80 dollars a pass. 5. Universal strongly states that Halloween Horror Nights is not appropriate for children under the age of thirteen. Now for the good stuff; Universal has already announced four of the mazes that will be at the HHN for 2013. The first of the mazes is themed after Insidious: Into the Further. The second is Black Sabbath: 13-3D which is themed after Black Sabbath’s music and lyrics. The next one is the all new Evil Dead Maze which lets you re-live the horror of the movie. Finally, The Walking Dead maze is making another appearance at HHN. Ticket prices vary but will be available September 20th, 2013. Make sure to check back with Great Escapes Travel Co. at 928-269-5330 for ticket prices and availability.

In the past years, Knott’s Berry Farm has focused on quantity for their Knott’s Scary Farm Halloween Haunt, boasting 13 different haunted mazes for attraction goers to run through. This year they have scaled back the amount of mazes to only 6, but this year’s focus is quality not quantity. Get ready for these six new terrifyingly haunted mazes. Forevermore is a Gothic horror maze inspired by the blood-soaked and terror-filled tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Black Magic is in a burned out Art Deco theater where Harry Houdini and demonic illusionists demonstrate terribly twisted magic tricks. The Gunslinger’s Grave is about the Red Hang Gang that tries but fails to kill a legendary gunslinger that rises from the dead to seek revenge on an 1882 Old West town. Mirror Mirror is a mechanical Steam Punk world that visitors are sucked into whenever they look into a mirror cursed by the Green Witch. Dominion of the Damned is a revamped

version of a late 1990s vampire maze called Dominion of the Dead that explored the shadowy world of the undead. This maze has a slightly different name but a more gothic history story line. Trapped: The New Experiment is an extra 60 dollar fee and requires a reservation but it is worth the extra money. You and up to five more of your friends are part of the horror and are an active participant in your own demise. This maze is designed to make finding your escape a challenge, because there are no doors. Need a little more enticement to head out for the scare of your life? The Mistress of Dark, Elvira will be haunting the grounds. The 41st annual Knott’s Scary Farm will start September 26th and run on select nights through November 2nd. Ticket prices vary based on which days you want to experience the horror. So stop into Great Escapes Travel Co. for more information or call us at 928-269-5330.

GET TO KNOW MCCS YUMA

FUN RUN!

RACE SERIES

by maria perez, marketing director

Did you know that MCCS Yuma’s Semper Fit program has started a race series? That’s right! And the next race in the series is quickly approaching- the 2013 Dead Dash 5K. If the name wasn’t already a DEAD giveaway, this is in fact a Halloween themed 5K to be held on Thursday, October 31st. This is an extension of the Halloween 5K that we host every year, but this one is twisted, ahem, has a twist. Participants will run for their lives as they try to zig-zag through hungry zombies. But don’t worry, these zombies don’t crave flesh, they will be attracted to the flags that participants have the option to wear as they race through the course. Also, racers will have the chance to

trick or treat while on the course, as there will be candy stops so participants can collect treats. Just like in previous years, we encourage participants to dress in costumesthe more creative the better. If you need inspiration, view the slideshow below of costumes from last year’s event. While zombies have been added as an attraction, we will also have other guests in attendance. The Dead Dash is now an open base event, which means that the entire city of Yuma is invited. So if you have some civilian friends, make sure to send them an invite. All civilian participants must register online at Active.com and pay a $10 registration fee- all of these registrants will receive a medal and

a certificate. This event is free for all Active Duty, retirees, DoD employees and their dependents, but these folks have the option to register and pay the fee if they want to receive a medal and certificate. Another new aspect of this event will be a booth area, in which participants will receive goodies, snacks and beverages from different sponsors. DJ Aldo will so be in the area keeping the participants amped with some high energy tunes. The Dead Dash 5K is scheduled to start at 6:30 am on Thursday, October 31st. Come join us as we kick start Halloween in the AM. Questions? Call 928-269-2383.
