Message From The
COMMANDING OFFICER Welcome to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and our 50th Annual Airshow and Open House. We are proud to kick-off the Marine Corps’ first aviation event for 2012 by celebrating the Marine Aviation Centennial. This year, you will have the opportunity to observe Marine Corps World War II era Vintage Warbirds in flight and amazing performances by Tora Tora Tora highlighting our own VMA211’s participation in the Battle of Wake Island. You’ll also be awed by the brilliant display of power and agility of the Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier, the Navy’s newest F/A-18E Super Hornet, the Marine Corps’ first MV-22 Osprey demonstration of the season, the incredible speed and accuracy of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Aerial Demonstration squadron and various other talented performers. Above all, you will have the opportunity to interact with all the men and women who proudly wear the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Service members from the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard will be available throughout the event to showcase their capabilities and share some of their military experiences. I highly encourage you to meet some of the worlds finest. MCAS Yuma’s mission is to provide aviation training ranges for U.S. and NATO forces that are vital to our nation’s Global War on Terrorism. However, it would be difficult to accomplish our mission without the tremendous support we receive from the Yuma community. We continually seek creative training opportunities to prepare our Marines and Sailors for combat and Yuma has supported us by allowing the use of the local community to add realism to our training. On behalf of all the Marines, Sailors, Civilians and family members of MCAS Yuma, I thank you for your support. Enjoy the show. Sincerely, Robert C. Kuckuk Colonel, U. S. Marine Corps Commanding Officer, MCAS Yuma

Military PERFORMERS
THE THUNDERBIRDS The Thunderbirds have the privilege and responsibility to perform for people all around the world, displaying the pride, precision and professionalism of American Airmen. In every hour-long demonstration, the team combines years of training and experience with an attitude of excellence to showcase what the Air Force is all about. The sharply choreographed, drill-style ground ceremony kicks off the demonstration by showcasing the attention to detail and esprit de corps that defines our enlisted members. As the jets take to the skies and fly only a few feet from wing tip to wing tip, the crowd gets a glimpse of the awesome skills and capabilities that all fighter pilots must possess. The solo pilots integrate their own loud and proud routine, exhibiting some of the maximum capabilities of the F-16 Fighting Falcon – the Air Force’s premier multirole fighter jet.

Military VEHICLES YUMA PROVING GROUNDS PALADIN: The M109A6 ‘Paladin’ 155mm self-propelled howitzer’s various incarnations have been part of the United States arsenal since the early 1960s. With a cruising range of nearly 200 miles, this weapon’s six-man crew can quickly deliver punishing firepower wherever needed on the battlefield. The Paladin is capable of pinpoint accuracy in both direct and indirect firing. M77a2: The M777 lightweight towed 155mm howitzer is the newest towed artillery system in the military’s arsenal. Extensively tested at Yuma Proving Ground, the M777 is slated to replace every existing direct support cannon system currently possessed by the Marine Corps. It will also play a prominent role in the Army’s ground arsenal. It weighs less than half of the artillery system it replaces. MRAP: The rapid development and deployment of the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle helped achieve a dramatic decrease in injuries and fatalities from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like virtually every other component of the Army’s ground arsenal, the MRAP has undergone extensive testing at Yuma Proving Ground. The newest versions are undergoing testing at the proving ground now. 60mm, 81mm, 120mm mortars: Field experience in Southwest Asia shows that a well-positioned mortar barrage against an insurgent stronghold at close range can be far more effective than shooting from miles away with traditional artillery. For decades, mortar testing has been a significant component of the YPG workload. Last fiscal year, YPG conducted nearly 300 different mortar tests. SILVERFOX & AEROSONDE UNMANNED AIRCRAFT: With an extremely dry climate, clear air, and nearly 2,000 square miles of restricted airspace, Yuma Proving Ground is the premier location for testing unmanned aerial systems (UAS). These pilotless craft range in size from handheld to massive. The Silver Fox is a low-cost surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft useful to the military and civilian law enforcement agencies, and the Aerosonde is designed to allow long endurance and economical flights anywhere in the world.

Civilian PERFORMERS FRANK KINGSTON SMITH RETURNS TO ANNOUNCE AT MCAS YUMA What a difference a year makes! Frank Kingston Smith has announced all but one the air station airshows and open houses since 1993, and this past summer, he got a big surprise. “My doctor found something suspicious during my physical in July, so he sent me off to a specialist who sent me to a surgeon who pretty much repaired me.” Frank had an operable cancer, but continuing chemotherapy is required. The gray and purple band Frank wears on his right wrist denotes that he has a “Power Port” installed in his chest. “I will be in chemo for at least another month,” Frank says. “Not real pleasant, but the oncologist wants to make sure he gets all the bad things cleared out of me.” Frank has spent much time explaining to people, mostly men, and especially men over the age of 50, why they should get a complete physical, including all the poking and prodding tests. “If my primary care doc hadn’t read my tests and said, ‘Hmmm…’ I might not be here.” “My wife, Linda, has been a big help. I feel run down much of the time, and she has really taken up the slack.” Frank is delighted to return to MCAS Yuma. “It’s exciting to get back into the action!”

Marine AVIATION CENTENNIAL
On May 8, 1911 Captain Washington Irving Chambers, U.S. Navy, Officer-In-Charge of Aviation, prepared the requisition for the Navy’s first aircraft to be purchased from aviator and inventor Glenn H. Curtiss, marking the birth of Naval Aviation. On May 22, 1912, Marine Corps First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham reported to Annapolis, Maryland, for flight training, marking the birth of Marine Corps Aviation. The operation of aircraft from Navy ships was a revolutionary step in U.S. military history which set the stage for innovations such as the inclusion of aviation in the combined arms concept, the utilization of the helicopter for troop transport, and the development of an all- Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing aviation force. Beginning January, 2011, the Marine Corps will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation in concert with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The celebration will continue throughout 2011 and extend into 2012 - the 100th anniversary year of Marine Aviation. This momentous occasion is an opportunity to celebrate the Marine Corps’ naval character side by side with our Nation’s other naval services. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of the Marine Corps and Marine Aviation to our Nation’s defense. As we move forward in planning events to commemorate and celebrate, it is important to understand and communicate the role of the Marine 16 MCAS YUMA AIRSHOW
Marine Corps and its unique contribution to our Nation’s defense. We are a unique organization comprised of war fighting elements that, when joined together as the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), is significantly more efficient and effective than the sum of the parts. The close integration of Marine Aviation into the MAGTF is one of the ways in which the Marine Corps is unique. The combined arms operations and expeditionary capabilities pioneered by our earliest Naval aviators and refined over the years have served to make the Marine Corps a lethal force that can strike from virtually anywhere in the world at any time. Military RECRUITING
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection from the sea, using the mobility of the United States Navy to deliver combined-arms task forces rapidly. The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. The U.S. Navy is the largest in the world; its battle fleet tonnage is greater than that of the next 13 largest navies combined. The United States Army is the main branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for land-based military operations. It is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. Initially part of the United States Army, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947 under theNational Security Act of 1947.
Joining the U.S. Military can be one of the most challenging and rewarding decisions you ever make. This being said, it is something you want to carefully consider before taking the plunge. If you wish to discuss your options, a military representative from one of the five branches listed to the right will be available to answer all the questions you may have.
The Coast Guard is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission (with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters) and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set.
