USMC Search And Rescue Demonstration

The Military Freefall School, part of the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, is a joint forces training school covering all aspects of military freefall parachuting in three courses -- basic, jumpmaster and advanced military freefall. These classes teach students to use HALO (high altitude-low opening) and HAHO (high altitude-high opening) MFFS continues to use a vertical wind tunnel at Fort Bragg, N.C., for initial freefall training. Students come from all military services and typically originate in elite organizations such as the U.S. Army Special Forces, and Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marine Force Reconnaissance, and Air Force Para-Rescue and Combat Controllers. After the courses, students are sent to a variety of locations, with the majority going to special operations assignments with Army Special Forces “A” detachments, Navy SEAL teams, or combat reconnaissance teams.

CIVILIAN PERFORMERS Kent Pietsch Airshows Since 1973, Kent has performed his incredible aerobatic routines for millions of people at more than 400 shows that have taken him to quality venues throughout the United States. While most aerobatic performers have one basic program, Kent executes three storied acts that leave spectators mesmerized. These include a dead-stick (turning the engine off) routine from 6,000 feet and a rooftop landing on a moving RV! However, Kent is best known for a comedy act that features a detached aileron (wing flap) and a mesmerizing wingtip-scraping pass down the runway that you must see to believe. When Kent is at the controls of his plane, it is impossible not to watch him perform. Kent loves to fly, but the audience is always his number-one priority. “If you can’t entertain, you have no business being out there,” he said. “The gratification is in knowing that people are enjoying themselves.” Kent’s humble nature and willingness to interact with fans make him a crowd favorite wherever he performs.

YUMA PROVING GROUND M101 105 mm Howitzer The M101A1 105mm howitzer was the standard light field artillery used by American forces in World War II. It saw action in both the European and Pacific Theaters, but earned particular acclaim for supporting infantry fighters in the Pacific. The weapon was also used in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and a total of over 10,000 were produced. Though retired from combat use, this artillery piece is still used to support testing at U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground.

UH-72A Lakota The UH-72A Lakota is the newest addition to YPG’s fleet of support aircraft. It is particularly well-suited for medical first responder duty, a possibility that must be planned for in test programs occurring on remote parts of YPG’s vast ranges. The craft has a variety of features pilots are excited about, from a full-glass cockpit and dual autopilots to sophisticated navigation systems displayed on digital screens, as well as safety redundancies like dual engines, which means the helicopter can still fly and land safely in the unlikely event of an engine failure.

Cessna Caravan The Cessna Caravan can reach an altitude of 22,000 feet and fly at speeds of up to 175 miles per hour. This model is a cargo version that has seats for the two-person crew and one passenger. Cargo space is sufficient to accommodate eight parachutists, but it is generally used to support
