lthough Hamilton Brothers and our sister company Ross of Lanark have traded as the ‘Hamilton Ross Group’ for decades…not a lot of people know that! 2016 has therefore been a year of consolidation, cultivation and growth. The seed for change was sown when firstly we united our brands with a new corporate Hamilton Ross Group logo.

Launch of New Ross of Lanark Website

Secondly we launched a new user friendly Ross of Lanark website with at a glance company information, latest product news and used machinery deals. Finally on 30th September 2016 a milestone moment in the 80 plus year history of our Group was made when we formed a new company, Reekie Ltd. The Reekie acquisition enables our Group to expand across the Central Belt of Scotland.

Hamilton Ross Group form Reekie Limited in September 2016

This move further strengthens our sales, parts and service support in uncharted territories such as Stirling, the Lothians, Fife and Perthshire, endorsing our position as leading suppliers of groundbreaking Agricultural, Groundcare and Construction machinery. Delighted Hamilton Ross Group Managing Director, Eric Gardiner said, “I believe this amalgamation will be invaluable for our customers as we further strengthen our market share and ultimately drive down costs demanded by modern farming.” This consolidation of two of Scotland’s longest standing Agricultural family enterprises concurs with AGCO’s strategic restructuring of the country. Now one of Scotland’s largest Agricultural, Construction and Groundcare enterprises, the Hamilton Ross Group boasts

Let’s Dine Out on This Latest Feast from Massey…

C

an you believe it’s over three years since Massey shot to the top of our Hamilton Ross Group Agri Charts with their new 5600 and 6600 Series? Hailed at the time as the world’s ‘ultimate loader tractor’ and ‘most powerful 4 cylinder tractor’ respectively, they certainly lived up to the hype by being a very popular choice for our Scottish arable, livestock and mixed farmers. But wait.... just when you think they can’t improve on perfection, Massey storm the market with a Tractorfest! Firstly, they launch an upgrade to the 5600 Series with the state-of-the-art multiaward winning 5700 SL Series,

then they treat us to a double whammy by upgrading the 6600 Series to the new 6700 S Series, which they previewed in September at Innov-Agri, France.

the new Massey 5713 SL scooped the first ever ‘Utility Tractor of the Year’ Award at Agritechnica

Our antennae were raised when the new Massey 5713 SL scooped the first ever ‘Utility Tractor of the Year’ Award at Agritechnica, closely followed by an impressive ‘Technical

Innovation’ award at this year’s Royal Highland Show. The top of the range 130hp tractor from the new 5700 SL series was certainly causing quite a stir, but could this latest offering from Massey really be the new crème de la crème of loader tractors for our farmers and small contractors? We ordered our 5713 SL demonstrator to find out exactly what was so special about it! For starters you have optimum visibility, manoeuvrability and transmission control. Moving on to the mains, you’ll enjoy the power of the very latest Stage IV/ Tier 4 final state-of-the-art AGCO Power 4 cylinder 4.4 litre engine with a totally unique ‘All in One’ Selective Catalytic Reduction

Massey set to bring the ‘S’ Factor to EIMA in Italy this November!

The MF 6700S Series Officially Launches at EIMA in Italy in November.

Key Features of the MF 6700S Range

ll eyes will be on Massey’s 6700 S Series which officially launches at EIMA in Italy in November. It seems the only similarity to its predecessor, the 6600, is its external shape! Major internal developments have been made to its AGCO Power 4.9 litre Tier 4 Final 4 cylinder engine, transmission choice, hydraulic output, 4-speed PTO and of course cab comfort!

●● Six models from 120-175 hp

A

with 200hp output it’s the most powerful 4 cylinder tractor in the world!

All six models in the 120175hp range come with Engine Power Management but the real ‘wow’ comes in the daddy of them all, the 6718 S which is capable of generating a jaw dropping 200hp output with the EPM boost, making it the most powerful 4 cylinder tractor in the world! Compact and light yet with unparalleled strength and power the 6700 S range is equally at home performing loader operations or heavy duty field work. Add to this a maintenance free engine, exceptional fuel economy and a 600 hour service interval and the jury’s out as to what the ‘S’ stands for. We reckon it could be…SUPERB!

●● Up to 200hp with Engine Power Management Boost (available on all models) ●● Same Power value regardless of transmission ●● Tier 4 final AGCO POWER 4 cylinder, 4.9L engine ●● New Dyna-VT driveline with EPM ●● New dashboard with Setup & Info Screen ●● Up to 5 rear hydraulic valves on Dyna-VT models ●● Electronic control of PTO speed selection on Efficient and Exclusive models

Manufacturing Giants JCB Herald Loadall Evolution with the World’s First Agri Pro 2 in 1 Transmission!

J

CB have surpassed themselves yet again this year with the launch of their new range of Agri Pro Loadalls showcasing the revolutionary DualTech 2 in 1 Transmission! According to JCB, telehandlers are used on average 60% of the time for handling, 35% for towing/road work and lie idle for 5%. This latest engineering feat promises to transform the use of Loadalls worldwide as it combines powershift AND hydrostatic drives. The result? You have a powerhouse of speed for road work or towing PLUS precision control for even the trickiest manoeuvre AND a 25% increase in productivity when handling!

Double the fun with Two in One

Specifically developed for the new range of premium specification JCB 531-70, 536-70, 541-70 and 535-95 Agri Pro telehandlers, DualTech VT transmission gives you optimum low speed control and smooth response for loading cycles which can be adjusted to suit personal preference for particular applications. Simultaneously, the direct drive powershift allows for the best climbing and high-speed towing ability of all JCB handlers.

The two modes are controlled by speed. When working below 19kph, the machine uses hydrostatic power, when above, it moves to powershift mode with three mechanical gears and speeds of up to 40kph.

The world’s first dual transmission loadall In hydrostatic drive, you can engage in Flexi mode by pressing and holding the transmission downshift button. This independently controls the engine and ground speed for the first time in a Loadall! Keen to try the world’s first dual transmission loadall? We’re really impressed with our full specification JCB 53670 DualTechVT demonstrator and we’re sure you will be too! Simply book a demo today by calling your local Hamilton Brothers or Ross of Lanark!

hen Andrew McFadzean of Pickles Agriculture, Maybole tried our straight out the box JCB Agri Pro demonstrator he proclaimed it was, “the best telehandler I’ve used yet”. So it’s no surprise that he was determined to be our first customer to snap up his very own Agri Pro 536-70 which our Tarbolton team were delighted to deliver! National animal and crop nutrition supplier Andrew traded in his old JCB 526S to upgrade to the all singing, all dancing 536-70...and it certainly did not disappoint. Rather, Andrew has confirmed that the revolutionary dual transmission has definitely lived up to the hype, “The

new 2 in 1 gearbox makes the Agri Pro a different machine entirely.” Andrew’s day to day job involves both on and off road work so he had to use his 526S for loading and unloading delicate supplies to and from lorries in addition to travelling between sites. “The Agri Pro has made a massive difference to my day to day work. It is superb for slow, precise manoeuvres like material handling and with the dual powershift I can drive to my other property half a mile away in no time as it does over 20mph. The 526S was very slow on the road so I get double the work done in half the time!” he quips. Now that the Agri Pro Loadall

has lightened his workload, Andrew can’t wait to see what JCB next has in store, “I have stuck by JCB for years due to their reliable and revolutionary technology and I can’t imagine what they will come up with next!”

The Agri Pro has made a massive difference to my day to day work.

It seems for Andrew the future is definitely yellow and hopefully with the Hamilton Brothers parts, service and back up team at his service he can continue to be a mellow fellow as he goes about his daily business!

t was celebration time again earlier this year at our Ross of Lanark Vauxhall approved Service, Repair and MOT Centre when our team scooped second place in the prestigious national Vauxhall Customer Excellence Awards for 2016. Although no strangers to success having already gained regional customer service satisfaction accolades in 2013 and 2014, this latest coup is by far their greatest with an impressive top three placement

out of 400 contenders UK wide! “This award wouldn’t have been possible without the superb support of our local customers who took the time to complete the survey,” said our delighted Service Manager Jennifer Bulloch. Peter Hope, Vauxhall Customer Experience Director also commented “I’d like to thank the team at Ross’s for pulling out all the stops to make our customers’ car maintenance and servicing journey a really positive experience”.

t seems the talent of our apprentices knows no bounds as in 2016 more bright sparks were awarded for their efforts! From valeting tractors at our Bishopton Depot, second year apprentice Stephen Moore has certainly shown his mettle this year by securing the Oatridge College ‘Engineer of the Year’ award which was previously won by Robert McLellan also from Bishopton. Another star student is engineer Michael Rolfe at our Ross of Lanark Depot. Son of workshop manager Bryan Rolfe, Michael proved mechanical prowess is in the blood when he won the ‘Lantra Landbased Engineer of the Year’ award at Barony College prior to graduating as a fully qualified engineer in June! Another Hamilton Brothers triumph was Graeme Ramsay who also snapped up 2nd place in the Landbased Engineer category. Interested in an Agricultural or Groundcare engineering apprenticeship? Senior Service

With over 100 years’ service a reminisce with agricultural engi Andy Reid and ask… are lapto

W

hoever coined the phrase of today’s modern Britain “there’s no such thing as a job for life” clearly hadn’t met our very own Willie Bilsland and Andy Reid. With a staggering 108 years of steadfast service to Hamilton Brothers between them, these boys could have hung up their overalls years ago. Yet the torque of the tractor is still so great and we’re honoured they’re still around to teach our young apprentices some of the tricks of their now vintage trade – starting with what hard work, dedication and commitment is all about!

Their passion for all things agricultural started at an early age.

Top Left: Willie on the farm as a child Middle: Willie and Andy outside the Glasgow Road Garage, Bottom: Willie with the old Hamilton Brothers Van in the 60s.

Willie who hails from Bishopton and Andy from Southend, Campbeltown were brought up on their family farms, so their passion for all things agricultural started at an early age. Their illustrious careers began when Willie joined the company for a 5 year apprenticeship in 1960 at the original depot in Glasgow Road, Paisley. “I earned 1/10s (circa 0.09p) a week and I’ve still got my first payslip,” he says proudly! Andy meanwhile arrived in 1964

as an engineer. “I didn’t do an official apprenticeship,” laughs Andy, “there was no need to, because my older brother John already worked for Hamilton Bros in Campbeltown so I’d secretly been his side-kick for years!” In actual fact Andy’s potential had been spotted by Hamilton Brothers Service Manager George Spark who sadly passed away this year. “If you can do the job, that’s fine by me, you don’t need any papers”. Changed days indeed! While Willie enjoyed home comforts in his family farmhouse, Andy stayed at the Church of Scotland Hostel in School Wynd, Paisley which was home to around 30 apprentices from all ‘airts and pairts’. After paying his weekly ‘dig’ money there wasn’t much left, so it was always a bonus when the clippie on the Johnstone bus returned his fare at the end of his journey to work! When asked the fundamental difference between agricultural engineering then and now, the unanimous response from the boys was “where do we start?” Whilst the core values of great customer service are still paramount, there’s a world of difference as to how this is achieved. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, tractors were a maze of mechanics from the engine and axle to the steering, gearbox

at Hamilton Brothers we ineers Willie Bilsland and ops the new toolboxes? and hydraulics. Both Andy and Willie had to learn how to do a complete ‘nut and bolt’ overhaul as part of their training. However, back then a simple 6 or 12 volt charging system constituted tractor electrics. “These days we’re talking spaghetti junction” quips Willie, “sometimes we wonder if our toolboxes have been usurped by laptops!”

Willie and Andy used to completely strip down and rebuild up to ten engines a month

When the boys started out in the 60’s, Agricultural Engineers were very much in demand due to their all-round ‘on the job’ training which encompassed mechanical and electrical engineering, hydraulics, welding, plumbing and joinery. If it had an engine, they could fix it! They repaired diesel, petrol and petrol paraffin powered tractors, agricultural machinery, cars and lorries by day, and moonlighted as plumbers and washing machine mechanics at night! They used to completely strip down and rebuild up to 10 engines a month (in comparison to one a year these days) and, if the necessary parts weren’t available,

they would make them from scratch. There was no such thing as a same day or next day guaranteed delivery service! What they did have though was the opportunity to turn an extra buck to eke out their meagre wage by selling filters, oils and tyres from the back of their mobile vans with 5% commission, stretching to a whopping 10% on a £40 belt for a combine at harvest time! Meanwhile, back at base, Willie also recalls repairing and restoring the yellow local authority Massey tractors, with the depot also doing a roaring trade servicing ice cream vans which used the same petrol paraffin tractor engine to generate electricity to make the ice cream for our sliders and single nougats! Give us the scoop boys. Were you inadvertently complicit in the Glasgow ice cream wars of the 70’s? Continued on page 14 *.

Senior Service

* The young engineers could spend weeks at a time away from home. Under the Massey Ferguson reconditioned tractor service (RTS) for second hand machinery, tractors were usually completely overhauled on site, and the level of restoration determined the warranty. A 2 star sticker equated to two months, 4 stars for four months. It was that simple! “I recall setting off on the 5th January 1972 for a two month island hopping tour of the west coast,” says Andy. “I did two complete engine overhauls on Islay, nipped over to Colonsay and got storm bound on Oronsay. Costs and Health and Safety weren’t an issue, it was just part of the job. Nowadays most of this type of work is done in our workshops as computerised tractors are huge machines by comparison and we use laptop diagnostics

The Hamilton Brothers workshop team and our customers benefit from the best of both worlds.

to identify problems”. Sophisticated computerised technology may have replaced the need for traditional mechanical engineering skills, but the older boys are quick to praise the electronic and diagnostic engineering prowess of their younger counterparts. It would seem however the Hamilton Brothers workshop team and our customers benefit from the best of both worlds. “In my day there was always a man and a boy and you learned on the job by shadowing the qualified engineer,” reminisces Andy. These days, apprenticeships usually involve a 3-4 year mix of block release college studies with the opportunity to put the theory into practise under the supervision of a senior engineer, and who better than our veterans?

Andy and Willie: They’ve seen a fair few changes over the last half century and it seems laptops are the new toolboxes!

“Sometimes we can even show them easier ways to complete jobs as that sort of knowledge only comes with experience,” chuckles Willie.

Sometimes we can even show the younger lads easier ways to complete jobs. That sort of knowledge only comes with experience.

That experience has proven invaluable to our workshop team not just on a day to day basis, but also for specialist projects as both Andy and Willie are tractor restoration enthusiasts in their spare time! Willie is also an avid vintage

tractor collector and a ‘wellkent face’ on the show circuit This year alone he has won 5 rosettes for his prestigious collection which includes a 1955 diesel Ferguson TE20, a grey and gold Ferguson 35 (one of the last produced prior to the merger of Massey and Ferguson), and a 1966 MF 135. Incredibly, he also finds time to help out at the Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride and has been assisting with the restoration of a Thrashing Mill from the 1900s, (the equivalent of a modern day combine), for 15 years! Andy particularly enjoys working on any tractor from the Ferguson T20S to the 300 Series, his all-time top of the tractor pops being the 390T. “I’ve been working on a petrol Ferguson T20S for the last 8-9 years and I’ve just got the bonnet to finish,” more guffaws! “My next one is a

diesel Fergie T20S for a friend so I should get that one done in jig time!” So, does this mean you’re planning on retirement Andy? “Not any time soon” came the reply.

Our boys have helped forge the careers of many Hamilton Brothers engineers.

There’s no doubt our boys have been instrumental in forging the careers of dozens of young Hamilton Brothers engineers and, as they head towards their diamond anniversary with the company, the management team of Hamilton Brothers would just like to say – you’re worth your weight in gold guys. here can be very few families whose lives haven’t been touched by cancer in some way either directly or indirectly. Next year we’re delighted to join forces with the Beatson Cancer Charity whose wonderful fundraising work has helped thousands of West of Scotland cancer patients and their families deal with the disease with dignity. With a catchment area of around 50% of the Scottish population, each year the Beatson sees more than 8,000 new patients and delivers more than 25,000 courses of chemotherapy and 6,500 courses of radiotherapy. We never know when cancer may strike, but we do know that the Hamilton Ross Group will be doing everything we can to raise funds for this fantastic cause. Watch this space for details of how you can help us help the Beatson to Beat Cancer 2017.

A Million Miles for Ellie Tractor Run Raises £5,200!

I

n May our Argyllshire Agricultural Area Sales Manager Alastair Dixon took the high road to North Uist to take part in the ‘1 Million Miles for Ellie’ Charity Tractor Run in memory of islander Ellie MacDonald, who sadly lost her brave battle with cancer in 2014 aged just 23. Ellie’s parents Angus and Michelle MacDonald founded the charity in memory of their daughter to raise money for Cancer Research UK, Maggie’s Centres and MacMillan Cancer

Support. Their target is to reach one million pounds by completing A Million Miles for Ellie in a Million Minutes.

In memory of ‘one in a million’ Ellie

The mile long rally was led by Angus in his vintage Massey Ferguson 65 and Alastair in a Valtra N143 was one of 50 drivers who paid £10 to participate in the fun filled day which like Ellie was definitely one in a million.

Animal Health

Lockdown disease amongst your flock with a belt and braces biosecurity plan! F

ifteen years ago the UK was hit by a disease that stopped the farming industry in its tracks. The foot-and-mouth outbreak of 2001 saw the mass slaughter of millions of animals which cost a whopping £8bn. Today it seems like a distant memory but the important lesson of investing in biosecurity lives on. In recent years, the government has introduced several reforms including the legal obligation for farmers and vets to inform authorities of “notifiable diseases”, such as bluetongue in sheep. However, disease still poses a daily threat with SAC figures confirming that Bovine Viral Diarrhoea alone currently affects 20% of Scottish herds.

Fail to prepare and you could end up paying the price! What’s more, poor disease control management can result in mass loss of livestock assets. Thankfully Hamilton Brothers stock everything you need to manage disease control, so here’s some top tips from our Animal Health

experts to help you create a watertight biosecurity plan!

rought All stock b rm must onto the fa ned be quaranti e iene routin A farm hyg . d e tablish must be es effective Invest in an fly spray

A three step biosecurity plan is essential for disease control... fail to prepare and you could end up paying the price!

Firstly, all stock brought onto the farm must be quarantined according to the government’s six day standstill policy as buying or moving stock can increase the risk of introducing disease to your existing holding. To minimise this risk, we recommend only buying from accredited schemes or trusted sources and keeping accurate records of stock in cattle or sheep movement books. It bodes well to treat and inspect your new stock during this time. On arrival, sheep should be treated with an anthelmintic like Norbrook’s Closamectin, and must be kept in the yard for 48 hours after treatment and separate from the rest of the flock for a further three weeks.

Secondly, a farm hygiene routine should be established. Pens or buildings housing livestock should be regularly cleaned out. All

surfaces including walls, floors and on feeding equipment should be disinfected with a solution such as Hyperox and allowed to dry prior to housing.

Many diseases spread through unclean bedding

Many diseases spread through unclean bedding so all cubicle beds should have any potential contaminants removed twice daily by laying fresh sawdust or applying an antibacterial product such as Britmilk’s Cosisan Powdered Bedding Disinfectant or Bedding Lime. Dung heaps should be kept clear of animal housing as they attract flies which carry nasty ectoparasitic infections and disease so invest in an effective fly spray or pour on treatment such as Kilco’s Permost Spray or Cooper’s

Bovine Viral Diarrhoea alone currently affects 20% of Scottish herds.

Our Animal Health Team is always on hand to offer professional advice on the latest products and treatments. Spot On Treatment. We also stock papers and killing granules to reduce the farm fly population and we have a range of rat or mouse traps and poisons to keep your food storage area clean and vermin free. But remember, you must undergo ‘Farm Assured’ training to apply such poisons.

Have a 12 month Animal Health Plan in place

Hygiene is also paramount during all routine animal husbandry. Basic rules apply such as using clean needles

and syringes when vaccinating so the Sterimatic Multi-Dose Syringe, needle protector and cleaning system is ideal. Finally, you must have a 12 month Animal Health Plan in place to complement biosecurity measures. It must include vaccinations plus endo and ecto parasite treatments (we stock both injectable and over the throat drenches for sheep and cattle), and you need to accurately record the use of all farm medicines. We recommend reviewing your plan every 6 months to take account of changing health issues and government

regulations. Our Tarbolton based Animal Health team are always on hand to offer professional advice on the latest products and treatments and with our fantastic deals, to help implement your biosecurity plan, you can also save a buck or two along the way! Hamilton Ross Rewinds

Winter 2016 / 2017

Customers David Wilson and John Clark share their restoration projects with a Little help from the Hamilton Ross Group!

W

e’ve been around as long as the rubber tyre tractor and, since the business launched in 1933 it’s fair to say we’ve sold a machine or two. We may be dinosaurs, but sometimes it pays off, as it’s always a joy to be reacquainted with an old tractor sold by us many moons ago! This year we’re delighted to share the stories of two loyal customers who have done just that by lovingly restoring their vintage tractors with a little help from us along the way! David Wilson of Drongan, East Ayrshire caught the bug for tractor restoration while refurbishing a classic 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 tractor. Now David, an Agricultural Engineer at William Kerr (Tractors), spends his days servicing modern tractors and his evenings restoring vintage models for fun. During David’s most recent project renovating a 1975 Massey Ferguson 135 he came unstuck when he noticed an original Hamilton Brothers sales sticker was missing from the tractor bonnet. Keen to ensure it was as authentic as possible he wondered if Hamilton Brothers could come to his rescue? Luckily we have our very own enthusiast on hand, Engineer Willie Bilsland.

Super sleuth Willie made it his mission to locate the exact Hamilton Brothers logo that would have featured on David’s tractor and he even unearthed details of the original sale to John Craig of Barbush Farm, Johnstone on 24th January 1975 in our old purchase ledger!

Thank you to Hamilton Brothers Tarbolton for providing some vital parts

who bought it from the original owner. Thank you to Hamilton Brothers Tarbolton for providing some vital parts and to Willie Bilsland at Bishopton for helping add the finishing touches, I couldn’t have done it without your assistance.” Today, the tractor takes pride of place in David’s collection and is enjoyed by all the family including his son David junior, who it would seem will soon be following in his Dad’s footsteps!

A delighted David said: “I purchased the tractor in November 2014 from Kenny Smith, Newlands Farm, Dailly, South Ayrshire

FARMING MATTERS Winter 2016 / 2017

How Massey Mad Vintage Tractor Enthusiast John Clark Has Come to Rely on Ross of Lanark!

J

ohn Clark of Woodlands Farm, Lesmahagow is renowned amongst the Scottish farming community for his impressive Massey Ferguson collection! Boasting a collection of three vintage and one modern Massey tractor, an impressive array of Massey Ferguson top to toe outfits and gadgets including a bedside lamp, something tells us he’s a BIG Massey fan! Having grown up on his family farm, John has always been Massey daft, but his passion for tractor restoration started

when he and his father acquired a second hand Massey Ferguson 399 from Ross of Lanark in 1998. Although the tractor was only four years old, John undertook quite a lot of restoration work and it is still a working machine on his farm today! “I had always enjoyed tinkering with tractors so collecting was a natural progression and a perfect pastime,” said John.

Ross of Lanark Director, Bryce Smith located the original sales invoice which meant John was able to retain its original licence plate number for authenticity.

In 2009 John added a Massey Ferguson 168 to his collection, which was originally sold by Ross of Lanark in 1973 to local farmer Arthur Russell which then moved to his daughter’s farm when she married. Determined to find out more about the history of his Massey,

John called upon Ross of Lanark Director, Bryce Smith who located the original sales invoice which meant John was able to retain the tractor’s original licence plate number for authenticity. Another of his prize possessions is a Massey Ferguson 135 purchased from the family of our very own Agricultural Sales Manager, Andrew Currie! “The 135 tractor was bought by Andrew’s father in 1969 and it was on its last legs when I got it. I stripped it out, rebuilt the required old parts myself but still had to buy my AGCO filters and oils from Lanark,” laughs John. “Ross’s have always been there for me. When looking for a tractor, I can be quite specific about what I want but Andrew usually finds it!” Today, John’s ever growing collection spans three decades. All that’s needed to take John up to a glorious five decades is a model from the 1980s. Is that the phone we hear ringing? At your service any time John! Got a restoration project you would like to share with us? Simply email marketing@ hamiltonbros.co.uk.
