Théophile Steinlen moved to the Montmartre Quarter of Paris in his early twenties. Here he met the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir, which led to many poster art commissions that became some of his most famous images. Steinlen often depicted cats and other animals in his work, as well as the bohemian cabaret culture of Belle Epoque Paris.
Alphonse Mucha was an Art Nouveau artist who produced paintings, illustrations, advertisements, jewelry, furniture and more throughout his prolific career. His commercial art is distinctive and instantly recognizable, remaining popular to this day.
Leonetto Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising due to his innovative poster designs.
Early advertising posters, such as those by Cheret and Toulouse-Lautrec, were produced in an Art Nouveau style – typically painterly in their approach. By 1900, Cappiello had established a new style that used bold figures popping out of solid backgrounds to grab the viewer’s attention as they walked down busy streets.
Cappiello created over 500 posters throughout his career.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec is one of the best-known painters and printmakers of the Post-Impressionist period. His immersion in the colorful and somewhat decadent life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to create an incredible collection of work that embodied the spirit of the Belle Epoque.

History might remember Harry Houdini as the greatest magician, but when the two were contemporaries, Howard Thurston was the most famous magician of his time. Known for his card tricks, Thurston also incorporated Spiritualism into his act banking on a growing interest in ghosts and the occult that emerged in the mid-19th Century.
Advertisements played an important part in a magician’s career. They were not only a source of spectacle, drawing interest to a magician’s act, but also promoted performances and intimidated rivals.

The production of manufactured goods increased in the late 1800s and with it came higher wages for workers. Targeting workers as consumers, many companies turned to advertising to get their brands in front of as many eyes as possible. Advertising was seen as the cornerstone of prosperity and helped people decide what to wear, what to eat, what to drink, where to travel and even where to live.

The early 20th century marked a moment in history when world travel became possible through marvels of modern engineering. Travel by rail, luxurious ocean liner, and plane made it possible to visit exotic destinations that previously had only existed in books and the imagination. This “Golden Age of Travel” lasted through the outbreak of World War II and left a remarkable visual record through the incredible travel posters that were created during that time.
The lithographic poster was created at the dawn of this golden age of travel, and posters such as these were plastered throughout cities and the travel hubs of Europe and the United States.

Buggies were the preferred mode of transportation in the USA, Canada, and the UK between 1815-1915 and into the 1920s in more rural locations. Bicycles became more widely used as transportation in the 1890s with the development of the “safety” bicycle, a safer and more functional version of its predecessors. The heyday of bicycles occurred in 1896 when there were hundreds of manufacturers producing a wide range of bicycle models for men, women, and children, making advertising extremely common and competitive.

Envisioning a future of travel to Mars, SpaceX commissioned three posters – OlympusMons, Valles Marineris and Phobos and Deimos. Each poster depicts popular features that could be seen on the surface of the red planet. With a playful, retro-futurist look, these posters fit right in with the NASA-released poster series ExoplanetTravelBureau.

We Can Do It! was created during World War II as a work-incentive poster for the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, where it was displayed for a brief time in their factories in 1943. It was rediscovered in the 1980s and has since become an icon of feminism.
