U
nlike seemingly everyone, I’ve always been rather fond of Jack Clayton’s 1974 adaptation of The Great Gatsby. To the naysayers’ credit, were it not for Ralph Lauren’s costuming or the judicious eye of the location scout, the film hardly deserves two syllables in the annals of cinematic history. And yet, there remains something uniquely beguiling about it. It dwells – the camera, that is – on the oddest of details. Having not viewed it in years, I can still nonetheless describe with considerable accuracy some of the luxuriating cinematography: the almondine shapes of Mia Farrow’s manicure as she traces even more exaggerated almonds around her eyes; the intimate topography of a jerrycan as it corrodes in the sun against a garage window; the manner in which red wine congeals in the bottom of last night’s forgotten glasses.

I suppose that what I find so intriguing is the film’s invitation for our eyes to linger. During the 1970s, it was the type of camerawork we really only encountered through advertising. But for Clayton, of course, the camera’s distracted, sideways ogling comes to an apex – appropriately enough – right before the titular character’s murder. The scene needs little reiteration: swimming pool, Breton stripes, revolver. But in the original cut, Clayton spent almost as long on capturing Robert Redford’s sunburn settling in as it did on Gatsby’s demise. Frames cropped-in closer and closer until (I can only imagine) those discreet little liver spots on Redford’s muscular shoulders became metres-wide on the big screen. Eventually, the scene was heavily re-edited into its current, perfunctory and anticlimactic state. How I wish it not so. “Ah, now this is how it should be done”, I remember thinking to myself in 2013 at (of all places) The Archibald Prize. At the time, I was standing in front of a hyper-realistic painting of a
man half-flung over an inflatable pool toy, gazing into almost scandalously cerulean water. Like Gatsby, the figure is absorbed by his reflection; like Gatsby, it raises questions about the precarious nature of (self-)portraiture. And oh boy does the eye linger! Following a vein from the figure’s hand, up the tanned, sculptural forearm, across his equally muscular shoulders and down the pensive face with its aquiline nose to the sun-puckered latex of floating toys, thousands of eyes have scoured every square inch of this canvas, resting finally on the little information card mounted beside. Here we discover that the man is in fact the artist himself – Michael Zavros. And here, we cannot but help smile. You see, Zavros is having just a little bit of fun at our expense. Making it nearly impossible for us to discern between the artist’s body of work and his body in the work, the mind is instead thrown in histrionic directions. Suddenly we’re reminded of similar poses in the work of Caravaggio, similar colour schemes in the work of Hockney

and similar compositions in 1980s Calvin Klein campaigns (or maybe the latter is just me). Through allowing your eye to linger upon his body of/in work, he ironically becomes more and more of an enigma. And not dissimilar to any of Gatsby’s guests, you find yourself obsessed by the question: “Who is that man?” “I like that my audience sees my life and art seeming to merge into one,” Zavros tells me en route to Miami. “In recent work, I’ve manipulated this further, offering fictional accounts of my life or an ideal life.” Returning again to his body of-slash-in work, Zavros has recently launched a debut monograph containing more than 120 pieces from his exhaustive portfolio, accompanied by essays from some of the art world’s reigning luminaries. Appropriately titled MICHAEL ZAVROS, the hefty volume delineates the ever-increasing ambit of his creative practice – from the hyper-realist approach to painting for which he is chiefly known, through to more recent forays into sculpture, photography and performance. “The monograph was a massive undertaking,” he says, “and it was difficult to get it right – to tell a story, as it were.” Pawing through lavish page after lavisher page, it becomes all too apparent that irrespective of medium there is always, nonetheless, an indelible Zavros hallmark. “I am an aesthete. When I look at the collected works I can see a very clear thread. My interests, my aesthetic, my attention to detail plays out across different media and subject matter, but it connects easily too.”
He’s certainly not wrong. In his more recent photographic series with Sean O’Pry – the reigning doyen of male modelling (pictured, cover) – nods to Zavros’ aforementioned Archibald entry, Bad Dad, are easily clocked. Whether in their amusing reframing of ancient Greek art – a once clay discus becomes today’s ultra-opulent Versace dinnerware – or in the evident undertones of Renaissance ecclesiastical art, Zavros’ work is both expansive and particular, droll and solemn. Playful, voyeuristic, beautiful, opulent, luxurious are all adjectives frequently ascribed to his practice, and yet Zavros’ rampant sense of humour often goes unnoticed. “I think so much of what I do is funny – is mocking something, even its own existence.” Across a broad portfolio of self-portraits, still life compositions, retellings of Greek myth, menswear or sumptuous interiors, the pursuit of beauty is paramount – but a type of sideways, winking beauty. Imagery of neckties poised like cobras, for instance, remind us that while the world of art – or, perhaps more accurately, the world of beauty production – was once thought to be the sole preserve of our society’s most soul-searching, original thinking, now it is wholly in cahoots with the structures of power and commerce that shape our day-to-day. “Everything is inspiring. It is rarely art that I turn to for ideas. There now exists a kind of performance between art and life, between family and studio in my practice and, to this end, my greatest inspiration is around me at all times.”
