M

elbourne’s design scene may be large and tight-knit, but its coverage is scattered. At least, that’s the conclusion Manuela Millan came to when she moved to the city to pursue a career in interior design. While the Australian bar and restaurant scene has no shortage of directories, where hungry punters can browse a comprehensive list of potential cuisines while hunting for their next meal, there were no corresponding resources for interior designers looking for lights to specify, nor for homeowners looking for a locally made dining table.

“Literally when I was studying interior design [at RMIT], I wanted to know what I could specify that was made locally so that I could support local designers,” says Manuela Millan, founder of Meanwhile in Melbourne. “I couldn’t find anywhere that was a list of all the lighting, or all the furniture that’s been locally made so, two years ago, I started an Instagram [@meanwhile_in_ melbourne] as a way of sharing what I could find.” What started as a hobby quickly became a job in itself, albeit one with a healthy amount of pleasure thrown in. When the Instagram page started racking up followers in their thousands, Manuela knew she’d tapped into something people wanted. “I put it up there to see how it went, but I didn’t plan it to grow this much; I didn’t plan it to be this big,” she tells McGrath. “It just snowballed out of control. I remember one night when I hit 3,000 followers, I was like, ‘This is amazing!’” In July last year, Meanwhile in Melbourne was taken online with its own full website. Like the original Instagram page (which is still running),

the site acts as an all-in-one directory for local design talent – whether that be photography, furniture, art direction, architecture, ceramics, art, fashion, lighting or interior design. Much of how Manuela comes to find these local brands – large and small – comes from the exact same platform that allowed her to share them with followers. Namely, Instagram. It is a telling example of how social media is changing the landscape within which we find, share, buy and sell our products and the people who make them. “I am 24/7 on Instagram,” she laughs. “I read through comments, I go through my likes, and I actually find people through people. It’s like an inception of Instagram: you keep clicking through accounts and all of a sudden you’ve found this amazing glassblower in Brunswick.” But with a new platform came lateral growth. Now, Meanwhile in Melbourne is as much a design directory as it is an event calendar as it is a fully-fledged blog. The same inclusive instinct that compelled Manuela to share local designers also compelled her to share their

events via an online calendar. As an interior architect at Elenberg Fraser, Manuela is invited to gallery openings and product launches that people outside the industry would struggle to find yet might be interested in attending. The final link in the triptych of services now offered by Meanwhile in Melbourne doesn’t have the same practical sheen, but is the most intimate and, arguably, engaging. Yet another of Manuela’s brainchildren, borne of the same impulse to bring the design community and its consumers closer, the ‘5 Minutes With…’ interview series allows readers to get a closer look at the person behind the product. To date, the website has seen Manuela sit down with big and emerging names across Melbourne’s design industry, such as art director Nat Turnbull (who has been behind many of the city’s cult openings over the past years), large-scale street artist Rone, and more far-flung guests like ceramicist Eric Landon of Tortus Copenhagen. “I thought of having the ‘5 Minutes With…’ space on the website so I could go to see the people behind the directory; to ask them what the inspiration was behind a certain piece, or even

what kind of coffee they like or the first thing they do in the morning,” says the perpetually curious creator. “They’re more personal questions so that when someone buys that table, they feel closer to the designer and they have a better understanding of the piece.” Despite the resounding success of the passion project, that same sense of inclusiveness and care for the local design community remains at the heart of Meanwhile in Melbourne – two sentiments that we at McGrath can relate to. Manuela’s mission is still to unearth and elevate local design talent on any level, and she says her inbox is always open. “If you’re a designer, just email me! I’m very approachable,” she implores, laughing.
