ustralians are a travelling bunch. Being on the bottom-side of the world can have its advantages – our isolation from the rest of the design world can create a feeling of freedom as we sit outside the regular ebbs and flows of the European and American market forces. On the flip side to that, sometimes the rest of the world thinks we’re too far away to make an impact or cater to modern demands. But even in a highly saturated and overflowing event such as the world’s most famous, and definitely largest, international furniture fair – Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy – Australia is taking a front-row position in contemporary design.

As I write this – tucked away in a small bar in Milan – I can hear intrepid design hunters raving about a visit they just paid to Local Milan. As one of Australia’s most vital avenue for bringing our creative talent to the international stage, Local Milan enjoys its third iteration at Salone this year, and never has Australian design captured the world’s attention quite like it has this week. Founded by Emma Elizabeth, Local Milan this year includes twenty-five Australian designers and design studios exhibiting their latest products and innovations at FuoriSalone. When I walked through the Local Milan exhibition or a few hours this morning, I was impressed by how much it has grown in scale, bringing in a mix of up-and-comers and well-established names. Working off the collective power of a group, the Local Milan exhibition takes a truly diverse cross-section of Australian design and influences. It is little wonder that, now enjoying its third anniversary, Local Milan has become one of the most talked about hotspots on the Salone scene. For me, however, standouts in Australian design at Local Milan this year include Jon Goulder’s new range called Innate for Spence&Lyda, as well as DanielEmma’s bold geometries and Adam Goodrum’s collaboration with Arthur Seiguer. Taking a different scale and tone, fellow Aussie (now via the UK) Brodie Niell’s exhibition Focus is set-up adjacent to Vitra’s Typecasting exhibition. Focus is an inspiring deep dive into the craftsmanship of Brodie’s furniture brand Made in Ratio. And as I walked through the space, I noted that it has been cleverly oriented to recreate the concept of a working studio – putting the techniques and processes of making on show, while the products themselves explorenatural materials. But it’s not just about full-scale exhibitions. Smaller Australian brands have found a way

to get involved in Salone del Mobile, and as a result, placing quintessentially Australiandesigned product in front of thousands of international creatives. One brand that has done this in a clever way, which also shows the value in collaborating, is Porcelain Bear. The Melbourne brand exhibited this year as part of a group show titled Meet My Project. In the short and blossoming history of Australia’s creative industries, we’ve found ourselves all too confined by our country’s youthfulness and geographic isolation. Our ties to colonialism and the British Monarchy have, in a large way, shaped our early settler beginnings and our enduring design aesthetic. As globalisation opens us up to new creative opportunities, we find ourselves grappling to define what it is to be simply Australian. Moving beyond the pervading influence of European, British and American design ideals, we find the world looking toward us to see new and desirable qualities in Australian design – ones which are well placed to help us write a new future for Australian creativity and ingenuity. “I think our design work stands on a global level and the quality of work is on par with what’s coming out of Europe and the US”, says Local Milan’s Emma Elizabeth. “The issue is, it’s inaccessible to overseas buyers. The first thing out of their mouths is, ‘Oh, the shipping!’. “It’s a battle… but I think we’re battlers. We have to think on our toes and seek out great makers and materials, and like-minded souls to support what we’re doing.” For Emma Elizabeth, it’s nothing ventured nothing gained, and Local Milan has been an exercise in ‘putting it out there’. “You can’t verbalise our (Australian) aesthetic – you need to see it as a collective. Let the observer create their own dialogue in their head.”

In any case, as I walk through the kilometres of exhibition halls across Milan, it is undeniable that Australia has raised its profile on the global design stage. While we continue to innovate, create and reimagine anew, it’s now clearer than ever that we’re about to enter a new era of design. And Australia, it seems, is leading the revolution.
