fter 50 years dominating the high-end Australian furniture market, one of the first questions that springs to mind regarding Schiavello’s decision to open a retail showroom in Melbourne is: why now? According to Anton Schiavello, to the company’s design and marketing director, the launch was driven by prevailing shift from ‘work-life balance’ towards ‘work-life integration’.

So, what do these two concepts have to do with Schiavello’s own moda operandi? Throughout its decades in business, the furniture icon has earned said icon status predominantly through its products and expertise servicing the corporate design market. However, the increasingly blurred line between work and life modes has pushed the brand towards a greater recognition within the hospitality and domestic sides of the industry – new frontiers that are targeted in the new retail concept. The Southbank retail showroom, opened to cater to this more residential consumer, was delivered by another fixture in the Australian design landscape, multiple-award-winning architecture practice Hecker Guthrie. The idea was to differentiate between these two target markets – but not too much, considering their gradual edging towards one another. This pseudo-oxymoronic need was reconciled with a showroom location that is separated into two streams for ease of navigation. While the future of bricks-and-mortar retail both here and abroad is uncertain, the Schiavello showroom breaks the mould through integrating emotion into the experience, and recognising that a chasm no longer exists between certain design modes. Concurrent with the showroom launch, Schiavello also launched a new line of ‘residential’ furniture that reflects how workplace design habits, sensibilities and technologies are influencing the way we live on a more granular, daily level. Hecker Guthrie’s architectural solution to showcasing this unique competitive advantage taps into a more intuitive, emotional way to navigate consumer settings.

The store practices what it preaches, conceived as it is around the twin pillars of natural light and open-plan living. A series of distinct yet connected spaces wind throughout the space, and rooms are sub-divided into more intimate rooms. Filled with natural light, the Schiavello Melbourne retail showroom reads as much like a sophisticated furniture playground as it does a hospitable commercial concept. “We sought to bring an architectural sensibility to the interior of the new Schiavello retail showroom, enhancing and augmenting the existing space with a play of different shapes and forms to draw attention to its contemporary context,� explain Paul Hecker and Hamish Guthrie, co-founders and directors of the eponymous Hecker & Guthrie. This is exactly the direction in which Schiavello sees the residential furniture market to be heading: playful, grounded, and architecturally minded, targeted at an increasingly sophisticated consumer that expects the same standards from their stores as they desire within their homes.
