s the director of The Colour Collective and DNA Designs, Nadine Donazzan has been a driving force in the interior design industry for over a decade. As an expert colourist and designer, Nadine explores colour destinations and conducts workshops that open our eyes to one of the great wonders of the world: the magic of colour.

How did your very intimate relationship with colour begin? To put it simply, it started because of the transformational effect colour has on people. Though everybody learns about the basics of colour at a young age, the timeline of colour and all the facts that we have accessible today come from scientists, mathematicians and artists – but it is not purely intellectual, scientific or artistic. Colour is a subject that can be comprehended and approached from both sides of the brain.

The Colour Collective is a platform of transformational experiences that uses colour to channel change. It is an opportunity for people to learn and experience pigments, history, and artistic geometric patterns and motifs through soulful and cultural connections with colour. One of the most inspiring aspects about The Colour collective are the tours that you organise. How do you select a destination? What appeals to you in your travels with respect to colour? And, what are you hoping people will learn, experience and take away with them?

Can you explain a little bit about your workshops and what you hope people gain from them? Workshops that I run (Blank Canvas and Hue Are You?) allows people to rip off their out layers in order to tap into their ‘internal’ being again. It allows them to reconnect so that you actually have an understanding. People get a chance to explore colour through a memoryassociation level and look at themselves through a lens of colour.

What appeals to me is the fact that colour is something I remember vibrantly, it’s the lasting memory I have of places that I have visited. The tours have to be at a culture that is vibrant and engages with the urban environment. For the tours to be a transformative experience, it needs to start there.”

And finally, what has been the most profound impact that colour has made for you personally?

I want people to get in tough with their selfawareness. Whether its wanting inspiration for themselves, for a new home, or business, the integration of colour, design and lifestyle will allow people to have a new and fresh perspective.

Whenever I look back at homes that have been renovated, or even my own spaces, I see that there are so many colour ways that have changed according to what I have experienced in life.

When I look at Morocco, I think of the food, the smells of the teas, the visual stimulus of all the vibrant colours of paint pigments and spice powders lad in piles for miles, the sounds of the markets and the silence of the desert, the tastes of the exotic and the touch of materials. All textures stretch our 5 senses to new levels.

I asked an 8-year-old girl once, what her favourite colours were. She said “black is awesome because it is a very nurturing colour.” Awed with her answer, I followed up by asking what colour she disliked. In that moment, she confirmed the personalisation of colour, “I don’t like sky blue because it is very interrogating.”
