The practice aims to achieve appropriateness rather than novelty, and subtle innovation rather than innovation by default. Each new building incrementally builds upon a lineage of works. Australia is known as one of the most sub-urbanised countries in the world – and the Australian suburbs have been Owen and Vokes and Peters’ main field of practice to date. Rather than lament or dismiss the Australian suburban context they have been seeking to make building typologies appropriate to it. Owen and Vokes and Peters’ houses have been published nationally and overseas and recently included in the new books; New Suburban published by Thames and Hudson, Forty-Six Square Metres of Land Doesn’t Normally Become a House published by Thames and Hudson, 21ST Century Houses Downunder published by Images Publishing, and Casas Patio published by Parramon Ediciones. They have also featured in international magazines Monocle, Italian Elle Decoration and were one of 20 firms mentioned in the Wallpaper Architects Directory 2010. The practice was also included in Place Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects, an exhibition of Queensland architecture shown at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane 2008.
