Once lost, now found. With her barn overflowing with vintage finds and nowhere to set up shop, Silvia Noble began to wonder if she would ever find the perfect home for The Lost + Found Department store. Ironically the long search took her back to her family property, high on a hill above Sydney’s northern beaches with panoramic views over the Ku-ring-gai National Park.

Free from the bounds of a regular shop-front, Silvia expanded her concept to create a program of events and workshops. Kicking off earlier this year with Campfire Grilling (part of a worldwide series with Kinfolk), the diverse program offers organic gardening, weaving, cooking, cheesemaking, beekeeping, bookbinding and all things artfully handmade with an impressive list of up-coming and established makers. Silvia says eating together is always a big part of workshop days and the lavish long table lunches are fast gaining repute. With the massive open-air tent (built by Silvia’s husband, Pete), paddock of organic garlic, small dam, beehives, kitchen gardens and the bunch of happy chooks it is easy to feel a million miles away - especially when the sun sets over the natural rock swimming pools.“It’s rare anyone comes and doesn’t up end staying longer than intended,” laughs Silvia. “It’s a special place and we enjoy sharing it.” As for the stockpile of vintage treasures, Silvia is working on an online store (which will also include a small range of handmade pantry goods) and opens up the barn for a true rummage sale experience at special events and workshops. thelostandfounddepartment.com.au
