Are you a charming Snake, a witty Monkey or maybe a friendly Rabbit? The 12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac are known to the Chinese as the Twelve Earthly Stems. Some say the zodiac animals derive from an ancient tale of Buddha holding a race and asking all the animals to compete. The first 12 were then represented in the calendar. The Rat won by riding on the Ox’s back and the Pig came last because he stopped to have a meal. 2014 is the year of the Wooden Horse. Stable and strong, Wood Horses have qualities of strength, energy, and an outgoing nature. They are better able to make decisions, and they interact well with others. As part of the 2014 Chinese New Year Festival in Sydney, multimedia artist Anna Glynn will be exhibiting at the Surry Hills Library. Inspired by her considerable time in Asia, Glynn’s work uses a diverse palette, including painting, sculpture, animation and theatre. In this exhibition, Anna will be using traditional Chinese materials to create stunning works for the Year of the Horse. Exhibition runs until February 28th. “In my paintings I create dreamlike images that utilise the natural character of Chinese materials, generating a meeting between East and West, traditional and contemporary. I have spent extensive time in China developing this genre, fusing Chinese traditional ink painting techniques with a Western aesthetic. In the year of the horse, for Sydney Chinese New Year Festival 2014, I am excited to present a selection of my paintings that include horses – an opportunity for them to gallop, glide and prance about.” annaglynn.com
