Horsing around Community visits and mounted security means no horsing around for these former champions of the racetrack. Winston Churchill once said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” The horses of the Australian Turf Club’s mounted security division are proving him correct. In contrast to former glittering racing careers which yielded tens of thousands of dollars worth of winnings, the now retired horses provide a unique therapy for people in aged care and special needs facilities, as well as creating an imposing security presence at major public events. The Australian Jockey Club (AJC) formed the country’s first mounted security division in 2010. When the AJC merged with the Sydney Turf Club (STC) in 2011 to create the Australian Turf Club (ATC), the mounted security team then fell

under this banner as it continues to do so today. The security division was originally designed as a means of keeping the commercial racing stables at Randwick Racecourse safe from 55,000 music fans during the Future Music Festival. The success of this venture has led to mounted security deployed at all four Sydney metropolitan racecourses during race days and carnivals. Shane Brady is the ATC’s General Manager for Security, Risk and Investigations, as well as a Trustee for the NSW Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust. In conjunction with Racing NSW, the ATC has formed a charitable organisation to rehabilitate or re-home former racehorses. Shane says that six have been trained into effective 3

Acknowledged members of the security division, the six horses are utilised in crowd control, stable protection, event perimeter protection and generally providing an imposing presence to any punters looking to misbehave. “We employ strategies for desensitising the horses to noise, vehicle traffic, crowds and obstacles. The horses all require a fair amount of individual courage, combined with a good and trusting nature to perform the role effectively,” Shane says. However it’s not just the horses that need training. The full time security coordinator Raewyn Parkin leads a team of casually employed, experienced riders who all hold current NSW security licenses. mcgrath.com.au

“We conduct internal training in regard to mounted operations, protocols and procedures,” Shane says.Shane has capitalised on the

Two horses and their riders go to an aged care or special needs facility and allow residents and visitors to pet the horses and feed them apples or carrots. The riders then deliver a kind of community education program relating to the ATC Mounted Division operations, as well as a background story about each horse to showcase the versatility of the thoroughbred as a breed.
