“Coats for Everyone” is the vision of long-time McGrath agent, Bernadette Berlyn, who experienced a bitter cold night last year when partaking in the CEO Sleepout. “Having borrowed a sleeping bag that lacked sufficient insulation, I couldn’t sleep and went for a 20km run around the city in the early hours of the morning. I was taken aback at the large number of homeless shivering on Sydney streets. “Approximately eight years ago while holidaying in New York, I saw a van collecting coats in Times Square and giving them to the needy. I didn’t think much more about it until last year when I did the CEO Sleepout.” There are currently 105,237 people homeless in Australia and 28,190 in NSW. The City of Sydney estimates there are between 150 and 350 people sleeping in inner Sydney parks and streets on any given night. Bernadette mentioned her idea of providing coats to the homeless to John McGrath, who encouraged her and has also thrown his company’s support behind the concept. The centrepiece to the appeal will be a “Coats for Everyone” drop-off box, located in Sydney’s Martin Place on July 1 – July 4. All styles of winter coats will be accepted, the only criteria is that they are clean and in good condition. For convenience, coats can also be dropped off at all McGrath office locations or Salvation Army locations.

The “Coats for Everyone” appeal will partner with The Salvation Army, selected to distribute the winter coats to residents of the various Salvation Army Social Service Centres throughout Sydney and outlying areas. “We are delighted to be involved in the “Coats for Everyone” appeal in association with McGrath Estate Agents.
