Occupying one of Petersham’s oldest buildings (a former bar, general store and then café) new owners Michael Coombs, Nigel Park and long-time friend Scott Duncan had good bones (and windows) to work with. A two month renovation by the owners themselves has given a fresh and light-flooded industrial look to the charming corner store. Bright touches of yellow bring it to life, and giraffe coat hooks by the door are a happy touch. With worn floorboards and a striped awning reminiscent of days-gone-by, the café has a neighbourhood-friendly atmosphere and a menu that features some of Duncan’s most loved dishes. A commitment to making every element in-house sees head chef Duncan working seven days a week. “We’re curing and smoking our own salmon, and our beef burgers are cold-smoked. We just try and do as much as we can in-house. All our jams, marmalades and yoghurts are made here,” he says. Judging from the weekend breakfast queues his hard work is paying off.
