ydney’s annual Vivid Festival is a celebration of innovation, creativity and community, with a series of events and the lighting up of various landmarks within the city. Vivid Ideas brings Australia’s creative industries together to exchange ideas, share designs, and mix and mingle. We had the opportunity to speak with the director and curator of Vivid Ideas, Jess Scully, to see what’s in store for this year’s Vivid Ideas program. McGrath: As someone heavily involved in the Australian creative industry, what does Vivid Ideas mean for you? Jess Scully: For me, Vivid Ideas is your annual temperature check of the creative industry. For anything to do with creativity, innovation and imagination, Vivid Ideas is the opportunity to stop for a moment, check out what your peers are doing, build new connections, meet new people, and put your own work into context.

McGrath: What’s the curating process like for the event? Jess Scully: Essentially, we do a call out to all kinds of creative people across Australia, and the world, and we ask them what events they’d like to attend, or what topics they feel are relevant at the moment. McGrath: What are the must-sees for the design hunter at Vivid Ideas? Jess Scully: Factory Design District is going to be phenomenal, and so is a fascinating event called Soul Safari Sydney which features a whole bunch of people like Vanessa Holden, Ken Done, and Sacha Titchkosky to talk about sustainable, ethical, and globally significant collaborative work. The Etsy Sydney Made Market will feature 72 of Sydney’s best Etsy sellers, and then there’s the crazy and really interesting Robowars. The Make Nice: An Un-Conference for Creative Women brings together a fascinating group of women coming together to talk about the creative business and lifestyle, and This Will Do is about humble design and designers who borrow from Japanese philosophy and aesthetics in their work.

McGrath: What about for those who want a break from the creative? Jess Scully: There’s an incredible amount of great TV talks happening. Jenji Kohan, the creator and showrunner of Orange is the New Black is going to be in conversation with Josh Thomas, a really fun Australian storyteller. Beau Willimon, screenwriter and producer of the US version of House of Cards, is going to be in conversation with Leigh Sales, which is going to be really funny and amazing.
