offee swirls – the pattern that decorates the froth on your cappuccino or latté – has became a whole new art in recent decades with world championship competitions and customers willing to pay extra for added artistry. At Lot.1 – a new café, restaurant and cocktail bar in Sydney – the coffee swirl has been taken to yet another level and translated into the interior architecture of the space. Enter Projects, a multidisciplinary architecture practice, undertook the barista-inspired project that saw a former retail shop converted into a restaurant and café. And since coffee runs thick in the blood of the Lot.1 owners Primo Coffee – a family that has been in the café business for three generations – translating the art of coffee into the architecture of coffee provided the fix they were looking for.

Lot.1 is housed in the heritage-listed John Solomon building, which has been stripped back to reveal the original brick and sandstone walls, wooden columns and old steelwork. Within this raw fabric, Enter Projects has laced the two-storey interior with swirling and furling installations that add dynamic movement and dimension. These installations functionally and visually connect various areas and services: they surge from the floor to twirl around the ceiling and they sweep across the walls to flow into the counter canopies. Indeed, they mimic not only the froth of good coffee, but also the wafting aroma. Architect Patrick Keane used digitally fabricated native Australian timber to articulate this smooth blend of form and function. “Curved timber geometries seamlessly circulate, unfold and connect all of the functions of the venue while

providing a journey through the historic Sydney interior,” says Keane. This “gymnastics of the geometry,” as he refers to it, was achieved with rigorous space planning, which has enabled the installations to define space, enhance privacy, enclose seating areas and augment lighting effects. The subtle colour palette draws from the Australian hardwood veneers and the environment is as comfortable as it is atmospheric. Like coffee, Lot.1 is a sensory experience; and like the art of the coffee swirl, it is distinguished by its creativity and execution.
