f you think 2017 hasn’t already been unpredictable enough, get ready for a wild ride still ahead! It’s not a bad idea to fasten your seat belts because, according to the Chinese Zodiac, the year of the Fire Rooster will be a powerful one bringing great change. Due to the Fire Rooster’s fiery, show-off and extroverted personality, this year is undoubtedly going to be marked by more enthusiasm, more energy and more gusto. And ‘more’ is precisely the attitude our cities took – with the City of Sydney leading the charge – for the recent Chinese New Year celebrations across the country. 2017 marks the 21st birthday of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival, which started in Chinatown and now extends all the way to Sydney Harbour. A fascinating coming of age story, the Festival is

estimated to now entertain more than a million visitors through a dazzling array of sights, sounds and spectacles. From humble beginnings, the festival has developed into an internationally renowned celebration of Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Korean culture – marking an important milestone for diversity across the vibrant communities all across Australia. Speaking to this growing love across Australia for embracing multiculturalism, Festival Curator Claudia Chan Shaw believes that our cities’ global reputations has particularly enriched our creative communities. Now, artists play an integral role in reinterpreting traditional events to relaunch them into a new age, for a new audience. “For the Lunar Lantern ”, Chan Shaw says, “we ask Asian Australian artists to put their spin on thousands of years tradition.” 4
“The brief [to our artists] was to go for the sky, go for the heavens. Do anything that you think best represents the zodiac animals and their stories. We will make it happen.” Chan Shaw said.

This year’s main feature – broadcast seemingly everywhere across social media – was the Lunar Lanterns exhibition. This enormous citywide installation reinterpreted the traditional narratives of the 12 spectacular zodiac animal lanterns, designed by Australian-Chinese artists, and stretched from Circular Quay to the Sydney Opera House and Dawes Point.
The Dragon One of the most striking lanterns illuminating the city was definitely the mythical Dragon – cleverly reinterpreted to comment on China’s emerging cultural identity. The six-meter long Dragon was illuminated by 400 LED globes, mixing traditional Chinese three-dimensional carving techniques with the colours and technologies of Western pop art.

the street below. The Golden Snake flew above the public, representing prosperity and wealth. The artists, amigo and amigo, also featured the Chinese happiness characters in the eyes as a symbol of good fortune. The Rat Outside the iconic Customs House, The Rat lantern was inspired by the artist, Guo Jian’s experience of moving to Australia and being embraced and supported by the Sydney LGBTI community. The six-meter-high declaration of L-OV-E caused an international splash for uniting the diverse communities central to the city’s history The Rabbit By the Festival Curator, Claudia Chan Shaw, eight larger-than-life rabbits stood by the Harbour Bridge at Dawes Point practising Tai Chi. Replete with over 3,500 vibrant LED globes (not to

mention sporting a veritable rainbow of silk waistcoats!) the rabbits proved especially popular with the Festival’s young crowd who stood amid the installation copying the Tai Chi poses. This year’s festival was lively, colourful, noisy, and exciting – a truly dazzling celebration of culture, heritage and inspiring artistic talent that projected a heart-warming message about the vital role that Chinese culture and heritage plays in our increasingly diverse communities. Annually across Australia our main cities – but also our smaller hubs – partake in this ancient tradition. So, if you missed it, make sure to put in your plans for next year.
