ith a buoyant economy, lower pollution levels year-on-year and one of the highest life expectancy levels worldwide, Australia certainly is poised for a bright future. In fact, ranked 6th in the world on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Countries Index, our country is helping lead the charge in approaching questions of health, sustainability and increasing the quality of life for all citizens. But while there is always still room for improvement, this blessed position is beginning to show new problems across the full spectrum of our residential sector. The Australian Home is being brought under scrutiny to respond to the increasing demands of a continually growing ageing population.

And it is precisely in this area that our architecture and design community is demonstrating pointed ingenuity. Clare Newton the Associate Professor of Design at the University of Melbourne believes that the future of housing will increasingly respond to age-friendly design – or aptly, in her own words, “agile housing’. “It’s really housing that can cope with the future”, says Newton. “Zoned houses that can be adapted, or divided off, with wider doorways, passageways. They’re ready for any changes that are needed for the future.” A significant majority of older Australians still live in detached suburban houses of three or more bedrooms. In fact, Australians aged above 50-years occupy more than half of the detached houses in middle suburbs along the eastern seaboard. Newtown points out that the growing trend across our Baby Boomer generation to stay in 4
their homes, rather than move to an aged care or retirement home, is beginning to revolutionise the residential environment country-wide. “People are living a lot longer, they’re reasonably healthy between 65-85, and they only want to move to aged care in their final years”. Many see a simple solution lying in the need for retirees to downsize, once their children have flown the nest. Here, an agile-designed home could allow land to be subdivided into separate dwellings. Current zoning restrictions aside, there is scope currently for our community to reconsider the value of multiple generations living inside our homes – there is value, that is, in reconsidering the ongoing norm and industry expectation surrounding ‘the young family’. According to Newton, “catering for the aged doesn’t mean that [the end result] needs to look ‘ugly’. Just by using universal design principles, we can create better lighting, wider hallways and ramps that can cater for the aged or young families with prams” in the one dwelling. But this is where I believe that Australia’s history can help its future. And, in particular, this is where I believe that our answer might lie in our country’s design history. One of the defining architectural and domestic icons of Australian design – the Rose Seidler House by Harry Seidler – to this day stands for a uniquely forward-thinking design solution to the needs for the ageing end-user: his parents. Designed for Seidler’s parents Rose and Max, the home is named in honour of Rose since she was the main client. Situated in the lush greenery of New South Wales’ northern shores, the Rose Seidler House demonstrates that highly modernist, highly functional and highly flexible design can contribute to improving the quality of ageing gracefully, in place (for tenant and building, alike). Built using four basic materials including natural bush sandstone, reinforced concrete, glass and timber, the house remains even today to be a bold aesthetic statement. Sweeping vital lines, a rectilinear form and a refined simplicity from building through to furnishings granted the original tenants an especial degree of freedom of movement, access and consideration for improving the qualitative needs for their mobility into the future.
the traditional desire for the ornamental façade of the property to face street-ward, the Rose Seidler House instead celebrates architectural spectacle from all sides. Each room, except the main bathroom, maintains a view onto the surrounding bushland, carrying in the extra benefit of flooding the interiors with a richness of natural light. Frequently celebrated for an innovative holistic approach to architectural practice, the Rose Seidler House integrates the use of form, spatiality, material, tonality, fittings, interior furnishings and landscaping with the surrounding land to contribute to a way of living the end result would engender. With the house divided into two distinct zones, public and private, and a sundeck that can be used to extend either area depending on the occasion, it is hardly surprising that the property remains to this day to be one of ‘the most talked-about house in Sydney’. The finished design overturned almost every convention of the Australian suburban home, and still continues to inspire a new generation of architects and designers, worldwide. Harry Seidler acknowledged that his parents “both lived [at Rose Seidler House] very happily for 25 years.” When Rose died in 1967 the home reached the end of its most significant period of occupancy. Today, however, the Rose Seidler House and its contents are under the careful stewardship of Sydney Living Museums who are ensuring that the site will continue to champion the values of ageing gracefully well into the future.
