Indeed, Geoff Isaac, who recently penned a book on the famed designer, may well be right. And yet until quite recently, Grant Featherston’s work wasn’t recognised as much as it should have been. “When you consider that some of Featherston’s designs sell for $10,000 or more at auction, it’s even more remarkable that so little has been published on the designer,” says Isaac. Isaac’s fascination with Featherston began when he was just 30. After separating from a partner, he was left with a house but no money, so picked up some furniture from local second hand stores amongst which (but unknown to him at the time) was a series of Featherston’s Scape dining chairs. A few years later, when his financial situation had improved, Isaac moved into a warehouse and started looking for some ‘decent furniture’. However, after several months, he could not find any dining chairs he liked more than the ones he had, so he set about refurbishing the Scapes and finding out more about the designer. His interest escalated and he spent the next 20 years collecting Featherston chairs. In the late 1990s to early 2000s, the demand for design in Australia was largely skewed in favour of Europe and the USA. However, thanks

to an enormous drive by our museums, industry professionals and a burgeoning design culture on our shores, we have recently seen interest building among the public to find out more about how Australia contributed to modern design in the 20th century. Featherston’s work arrived at the same time that the Opera House was being built, Harry Seidler was creating some of the country’s most iconic buildings and a spirit of confidence in the modern world, following the war, was taking shape amongst a newly empowered generation. That Australians now want to learn more about this era, and our great industrial designer, is evident in their generous collective donation of $47,000 on crowd-funding website Kickstarter, which allowed Isaac to publish his book. This well exceeded his target of just $28,000. However, shortly after the campaign ended, Thames & Hudson approached Isaac and will now be taking over the publication; further proof of the mounting interest in Featherston’s legacy.

Four years in the making, this 300-page monograph – simply titled Featherston – features 250 beautiful colour photographs, most of which have never been published. It covers the period from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s, during which he designed hundreds of pieces, many of those with his wife Mary. Working in wood, steel and plastics, Featherston embraced new materials and technologies and some of his designs sold hundreds of thousands of copies. And that was when the population of Melbourne was just 1.2 million! One of the most interesting chairs that Grant and Mary created together was the Talking Chair for the Australian pavilion at the 1967 World Expo in Montreal. The comfortable high-backed chair featured speakers concealed within the headrest so that, when visitors sunk into the chair, they would hear conversations introducing various aspects of Australian life: The Prime Minister, Harold Holt, speaking on industrial development, 7

Sir Robert Menzies on national resources, Robert Helpmann about ballet, and so on. Not surprisingly, this unique fusion of technology and furniture became the talk of the town in both Montreal and Melbourne. Today the Talking Chair is a lesser-known design of Featherston’s but is popular with collectors and models such as the Mark II (made for the domestic market) can fetch up to $15,000 or more at auction. In Isaac’s own words: “the ingenuity required to succeed and consistently deliver successful modern designs is the real, previously untold story of Featherston revealed in my book.”
