ost of us will endeavour to help a charity or worthy cause when we can. It makes us feel good and nourishes the soul. So what better way of ‘doing your bit’ than by caring for an adorable little puppy for 12 months? As part of Guide Dogs Australia’s puppy raising scheme, volunteers from the general public are required to take puppies in at eight weeks old and give them a home for a year. For the first eight weeks of their lives the young pups will spend most of their time sleeping or playing, but as soon as they can walk they start training. By 12 weeks old they will be out and about attending Puppy Pre-School, learning important commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘drop’ and socialising with other dogs. We spoke to Barbara Chong, who has been a puppy raiser four times already and intends to raise some more! “We started eight years ago

when the kids were quite young and kept bugging us for a puppy as we thought it would be a good place to start,” she explains. “The first time we did it, it was a bit of a challenge – like bringing a newborn into your life – but then it got much easier and we are now onto our fourth, I think it has become an addiction! When asked what she enjoys most about puppy raising, Barbra answers: “As I said, it’s like having a new family member so it brings all the family together; we all have our parts to play. The kids were initially upset about having to give the dogs back but now they are used to it and understand it’s for the good of the people who need them. Knowing how much you have helped someone makes it so rewarding, we feel like we are giving something back,” she adds.

Guide Dogs are really good before you get started; they explain exactly what’s expected and that it’s a big job… there is a lot of work but it’s so rewarding as well. “I explained to my work what it would mean to have a guide dog at the office and they were all fully supportive,” he continues. “At work she was mainly just under the desk but at home it’s so fun. It’s great watching them become closer to becoming a guide dog. It didn’t affect my social life at all… everyone loves her and the only cost is a bed and toys; all her food and vet bills are taken care of. “Everyone asks if I will find it hard to give her back but it’s part of the job and she will become a special pup for someone else,” Julian adds. “Although doing this has made me realise I really want a puppy in my life so I might end up becoming a serial puppy raiser!”

“Actually our third dog we got to keep permanently because she has become a breeder. So whenever Guide Dogs want to breed her they bring her in and then, once the puppy is six weeks old, she comes back to us!

All dogs leave their puppy raising families when they are 14 months old. They are assessed on health and temperament and tested on what they have learnt so far, with suitable dogs then going on to do 20 weeks of intensive Guide Dog training. Following this, the dogs will then be tested again on their ability to ignore distractions, navigate obstacles, travel on public transport, find landmarks such as bus stops and cross the road safely.

“I would definitely recommend the puppy raising scheme to others too,” she continues. “If you need to go away during the year then you don’t have to worry about leaving the puppy at a kennel or the cost that incurs – Guide Dogs will arrange for the puppy to be cared for whilst you’re away. Plus you get so much help and advice from your trainer, you feel like someone is holding your hand and you can call them anytime.”

They are now ready to start their working lives and every dog and handler is evaluated on personality, lifestyle and physical traits to ensure a perfect fit. From here ‘the team’ will need to

build trust and develop a strong bond, so that the handler can gain their independence to move safely and confidently around their community. Eventually, after eight to ten years of working, the dogs will have walked around 9000km and will be ready to retire. The handlers then have the option of keeping their Guide Dog as a pet or allowing them to find a new home with a loving family. Demand for Guide Dogs is on the rise as vision loss is increasing in the community. Every hour of every day, an Australian learns that they will lose their sight. Nine people each day will eventually go blind. By 2020 it is estimated vision loss will affect over 800,000 Australians* (Vision 2020) To provide these services though, it does rely heavily on financial support from the community and businesses.
