he set up her own business in 1997 with a showroom in Pymble (on Sydney’s upperNorth Shore) but even before the public knew her name, Lisa Gowing was creating exquisite couture gowns for Aussie brides. “After graduating from University with a Visual Art Degree and studying Fashion Design at East Sydney Tafe (now UTS) I knew I wanted to create a collection of dresses; a more feminine and timeless form of fashion - proper gowns,” she recalls. “Bridal Couture was really the only arena for realising this and then my sister became engaged so I took her to a Bridal Couture showroom in The Strand Arcade, bringing with us the sketches I had prepared of her dream gown. The owner of the business made her gown and hired me as an in-house Bridal Couture designer!”

It was during this time that Lisa trained in the intricacies of couture dress- making and, to this day, she still uses original techniques that are largely forgotten in today’s fashion. Her stunning designs in layered silks and exclusive French and Italian laces captured the attention of the nation and her brand has gone from strength to strength. Lisa has since relocated her showroom to a more prominent position in Edgecliff and also sells to the David Jones Bridal Suite (on the Seventh Floor of the Elizabeth Street Flagship Store) plus select boutiques including Oxford Bridal and Storybook Bridal. Of course, establishing her own business in the nineties wasn’t without its challenges. “It was 1997 – well before the Internet and social media were driving fashion and global trends,” she

remembers. “Print advertising and editorial were one of the few ways to be seen, so I decided to spend heavily on print advertising and open my showroom in a very visible location so I could create dreams in the windows. Also, my brother Mark Gowing is a very well respected and recognised commercial artist so he assisted with the logo and branding of LISA GOWING Couture and later LISA GOWING Event and Bride.” For the first seven years after launching LISA GOWING Couture, Lisa worked solely in couture bridal design. Today though she is focussed on her ready-to-wear collections as it enables her to design more styles more frequently and makes her designs more affordable and thus accessible to a larger market. It also allows her to wholesale the collection to stores, enabling the brand to grow. 4


When asked where and how she continues to find inspiration for her gowns, she answers: “I draw my inspiration from everywhere and everything. I see shapes, colour, texture and form in everything and have endless ideas for gowns, collections and other areas of design. I find travel, particularly international travel, releases my creativity. This is when I have time to think, read, watch and dream.” It was whilst Lisa was overseas – travelling through Italy with her then-boyfriend David – that the pair became engaged and we were eager to know whether she, like most brides-to-be, had to spend time thinking about what her dream dress would look like or whether she knew instantly. “David proposed on our very first day in Bellagio on Lake Como” (sigh, how romantic) “so this

gave me the next four weeks to think about my wedding day whilst we travelled down to Capri,” Lisa reveals. “When I did pick up my pencil though, I just did one sketch and this is what I wore. I had been in bridal design for 13 years by that time and was the fit model for my collection so I had seen every style on myself and knew what would work.” Lisa has some good tips too for other future brides when shopping for a gown. It’s important to keep your mind open to ideas and styles that you might not have considered, she advises, as a trained eye will know what will work on you and it might not be what you initially expected. She also suggests keeping the entourage to a minimum. “Don’t bring too many people to your bridal consultation. Most brides think of shopping for their wedding gown as a fun day out but all those opinions can get very overwhelming and confusing,” she warns. “Finally, take the leap and buy the gown that you love when you see it. Your first instincts are usually the best.” The famous designer has already achieved so much in her career but Lisa Gowing isn’t one to sit still for long and has a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline. She is currently working on an

Heirloom collection, which celebrates 20 years in bridal design and will represent elements of all her collections over the past 20 years. She has also recently launched Castlebelle – a property styling business available to homeowners on the north shore, which comes off the back of another of her passions. Over the years, Lisa has designed three showrooms and many of her own residencies as well as those of friends’. “I adore styling property and creating a liveable, functional home that also looks beautiful,” she explains. “We have just purchased a gorgeous old 1930s property in Wahroonga and I am in the midst of designing every detail in every room and having a wonderful time!” We haven’t seen any examples of her interior styling yet but, if these homes are anywhere near as stylish or timeless as her bridal gowns, then we know they will be exquisite.
