A

man walks out onto a stage dressed in a white smock, white pantaloons, and a white Phrygian cap. Down his front, some black pompoms – one beginning on his hat, several on his torso, and a final pair on the tips of his shoes – delineate a vertical line that cuts him right down the centre. He needn’t open his mouth – we understand exactly. He’s a clown, but also a man, a person divided inexorably. For the next several hours, a tale of internal conflict reigns supreme: he is required to be merry and buoyant, and yet he is wretched. Forcing us all to laugh he, however, can only cry.

Errata: A statistical error was made in the June 24th issue of McGrath Magazine. Demand for Guide Dogs is on the rise as vision loss is increasing in the community. Every hour of every day, an Australian learns that they will lose their sight. Nine people each day will eventually go blind. By 2020 it is estimated vision loss will affect over 800,000 Australians* (Vision 2020), not 100,000 the writer misquoted. Habitus apolgiises for any inconvenience caused.

As far as operas are concerned, this one – Pagliacci, composed by Leoncavallo in 1892 – is perhaps one of the most agonising. A clown falls in love, is cuckolded, loses his acting troupe, his lover and … finally … his wits. A tale of a desperately abject man dressed up as a clown, the opera itself is a tragedy dressed up as a comedy. Never has an entire narrative been so expertly synthesised in a single costume. Of course, the operatic world has never been short of sartorial verve. In the past handful of years alone, Viktor & Rolf, Muiccia Prada, Emanuel Ungaro and

Christian Lacroix have enjoyed successful forays as costumiers for grand opera houses in New York, Baden-Baden, Naples, Paris and Berlin respectively. And yet, it was only just last month that I happened upon Australia’s unique contribution to the divine partnership of fashion and opera. “You wouldn’t believe it! There’s racks and racks of amazing costumes sitting down in the Opera Australia vaults,” one of my closest friends tells me. “There must be thousands,” he continues, “some dating back to the first year the Opera House opened.” 4

Tasked with the enviable job of sorting through more than 10,000 costumes from the Opera Australia archives, my friend and his team at Leonard Joel – one of the country’s leading fine arts and antiques auction houses – sorted through stock no longer in production to locate pieces of especial cultural significance. “We’re hoping to marry many of these pieces with Australian and international institutions, bringing these items long stored away from view back to the public to be celebrated as a part of Australian design history.” 5

In what is undeniably a mammoth undertaking for Opera Australia, senior staff assisted Leonard Joel’s experts to find 1,500 particular costumes that the company had decided would not be put in production again, and therefore better to be brought back to life for public viewing. And, after you handle these pieces, it’s not difficult to understand why particular costumes do not enjoy frequent re-use. I was shown one frockcoat, in particular, designed in 1980. In wool brocade, the floorlength coat is lined in heavy velvet. While very

6

appropriate for the Russian production for which it was intended, it was so heavily constructed and overbearing that its weight (counter-intuitively) caused difficulty singing. Other examples such as a calfskin biker jacket with 6 foot train would surely cause an uprising from singers asked to bare such weight under stage lighting. And elsewhere, hero pieces in the collection are so ‘of their time’ that there is little chance in them being used again, and even less chance of their labour-intensive handiwork being altered. When I viewed the collection in its entirety before being sent to auction, a small party of prior employees of the company were also in attendance. Each had a personal connection to the pieces, craftspeople whose incredibly pinpoint perfect work – some from 60 years ago – was being revived to be put on display and auctioned to the public. Several pieces, naturally, are touted to be the ‘divas’ of the collection. The Violetta gown worn by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa for La Traviata was one such coup: found in an uncatalogued crate of unknown gems, the piece had been packed away long before the storage facility was systemised, an unexpected and exciting addition to the auction 7

offering. Meanwhile everyone has their gaze directed upon one lot in particular: The Madonna. This iconic piece of design history was completed for the 2007 production of Puccini’s Sour Angelica. An embellished brocade gown in Elizabethan style (replete with ruffles, crinoline bustles, hoops, trims, lace, grosgrain, pearls and gems), it’s accompanied by a sunburst halo which footlights catch at such an angle during the Madonna’s aria that her face appears to emerge from a corona of pure light. Textiles and Fashion cataloguer Timothy NicolFord of Leonard Joel tells me that “this is unique opportunity to invest in a piece of Australian design history. An auction of this calibre or subject has never been brought to the Australian public and is in itself a rarity on the international stage, a unique opportunity for private collectors, institutions and theatre groups to invest in these items and breathe new life to pieces otherwise lost to the momentum of stage production.”
