ne evening in 1996, traders in the pit of the New York Stock Exchange were dumbstricken as the bell rang out 4pm to mark the day’s close of trading. Share listings and stock points were fed to the evening press. A little further up-town on Fifth Avenue, the fashion elite toasted the success of their newest saving grace, Tom Ford, under the shadow of Trump Tower. Gucci’s stock finished on a record high and, with Ford being at the helm for two years by this point, the company’s sales had closed at an increase of more than ninety per cent.

Granted, most tend not to find fashion finance as interesting as I, but few of us can dispute such a landmark achievement for a company that has had more issues over the years than Vogue (as it were). Dawn Mello – the company’s prior creative director – purportedly said that “no one would dream of wearing Gucci” merely a few years earlier. And suddenly, seemingly overnight, Gucci became a brand – no longer a company, and certainly no longer the dowdy Florentine cousin overshadowed by its more dazzling Parisian counterparts. You see, by the time Ford took up the Gucci mantle, naysayers were already taking bets on the number of days the company would survive. Years of staid garments and uninspiring collections were cast aside for sensual, sophisticated tailoring and an annual ‘It’ piece – an absolute ‘must’, that season-defining item photographed and bootlegged to death. Upon Ford’s departure in 2004, the fear began to set in again. And from that day to this, nobody has seemed to be able to fill his shoes (though, indeed, many have valiantly tried). …Well, that was until now. Eschewing Ford’s confident, sleek and focussed collections for something that is altogether their contrary – a riot of brocade, applique, pearls, bright old biddy patterns and scrolling, bulky trims along every edge – Alessandro Michele may have just become the new Gucci goldenboy. Having just announced the launch of the brand’s new Gucci Décor collection, Michele has 5
bridged the divide between the worlds of fashion and interior design, bringing an accent of Gucci’s contemporary romanticism into the home. Touted to arrive on Australian shores within a matter of weeks, the new Gucci Décor collection is currently in the throes of a preorder furore – and very few of us are surprised. Following Michele’s preternaturally successful disco-baroque-cat-lady aesthetic that was photographed ad nauseam over the past year, all pieces in the Gucci Décor collection display the same design motifs familiar to Michele’s catwalk. Patterns, fabrics, colours and decorative tropes that stomped down the runway a few weeks ago 6
have been expertly reimagined for furniture, furnishings and crockery. According to the Gucci press office, “the overall effect is one of a surprising, joyous combination of hue, pattern and design, where there are no rules”. Whether vanity sets, chairs, wallpapers, room dividers, candles (… the list can go on and on), the influence of the Gucci lexicon is ubiquitous: here the famous Gucci Staffordshire dog graces a cushion; there a metal serving tray carries the same pineapple motif that was stitched into the lining of earlier AW16 outerwear pieces. Flora and insects are scattered abundantly 7
across furniture, tea pots and screens, while intelligently modular furniture echoes Michele’s belief that our homes should be flexible, as easily dressed and re-dressed as the people who live within them. Gucci Décor will be launched from September with a progressive global rollout in Gucci flagship stores, specialty stores and online.
