east Watson celebrates the joy of resourceful design for a fifth year running, with the Re-Love Project 2017.

Among this year’s creative local up-cyclers are Scandinavian design retailers Norsu Interiors, stylist Aimee Tarulli, furniture house Mark Tuckey, style curator Gina Ciancio, self-taught interior decorator Kristine Franklin and design studio Dowel Jones.

“Re-Love was a great opportunity for us to be able to look at inventive ways of recycling furniture,” says Dowel Jones’ Dale Hardiman. “We wanted to approach it as a true design project, so we made sure to push beyond just cosmetic changes – we put our pieces through a process and really experimented with ways to re-love them.” Intrigued by a pair of worn director’s chairs sourced from their local Salvos, Dowel Jones began conducting research into the provenance of the design, which dates back to the late 1800s. “For something so ubiquitous, no one’s name is attached to it, but millions of companies have produced the same kind of object’” says Dale. “Which was great for us, because it meant that we wouldn’t be up against a long history of interpretations.” 5

to something unique, so that’s what we try to do,” says Dale.

“Their floor paint was the best for this project. Both of the frames are solid teak, which is quite dark. By using floor paint rather than a stain, we didn’t have to do too much sanding, and we were able to create a new layer over the top to get some solid colour,” Dale says. For the foldable chairs to work, the team needed a fabric that was robust yet flexible. The unique speckled material, which features in select colourways in Dowel Jones’ furniture collection, is a waterproof rubber foam developed by the studio over a year ago. “It isn’t particularly strong by itself, but when you glue it up to leather, it becomes incredibly durable. It’s quite a tricky thing to work with, but in this application it was perfect,” Dale says. Dowel Jones applied their playfully pun-filled style of nomenclature to the project, combining the world of cinema and the Feast Watson brand to christen the chairs ‘Clint Feastwood’ and ‘Naomi Watson’. “You can give so much life and personality to an object just by changing its name

Last year, the Re-Love Project raised $5,000 for The Salvos Stores, an impressive sum which Feast Watson hopes to outdo in 2017. “The Re-Love program has evolved year on year, and it’s a really special initiative within our company,” says Jessica Plateo, Brand Manager at Feast Watson. “For us, it’s about bringing the natural beauty of timber into people’s lives while being able to help raise funds for the Salvos.” “The most important piece of advice I would have for up-cyclers is to give things your own personality,” says Dale. “We hope that what people take from this is that you don’t have to go looking at websites to tell you how to do things. It’s your own piece, so give it your own spin.”
