he was livid – absolutely enraged to a point of churlishness. You see, the unlikeliest of ingénues had eclipsed her and, now, a man approaching middle age was writing her out of the annals of style. It was February 12th, 1947 – day one of what would later be recognised as the very first Paris Fashion Week – and Coco Chanel fed this little forensic obliteration to The New Yorker ’s French correspondent: “Dior! He doesn’t dress women. He upholsters them.”

la Chanel, wore narrow skirts, and boxy, cropped jackets with affected shoulder pads in a largely boyish silhouette. And now soft shouldered, amble bosomed and abundantly skirted pieces declared, according to Christian Dior himself, that “Europe had tired of dropping bombs and now wanted to let off a few fireworks.”

Merely hours earlier at Maison Dior on the 8th arrondissement models trotted around the atelier, as journalists scribbled wisecracking headlines in shorthand. A brave new order of sumptuously lavish hemlines swished everywhere, upsetting porcelain ashtrays, and the entire female population of Paris (sans Coco of course) lauded the ‘New Look’ with standing ovation. As Dior’s directrice announced the name of each ensemble – Caprice, Amoureuse, and any number of lubricious watchwords – waspishly waisted women laced in opulent gowns made a courageous statement that tomorrow’s world would be one of confident, empowered femininity not seen for generations (if ever) under the austere privations of world war.

One such “firework” was a wide-eyed Australian beauty, Svetlana Lloyd, who in Melbourne last week – seventy years later – stood beside the original evening gown she exhibited: NGV International’s House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture. This rightly celebrated retrospective of the couturier’s platinum anniversary is sending this country’s sartorialists into a frisson that equals the passion which caused one 1948 Vogue reporter to exclaim Dior had successfully delineated “the prettiest triangle since Pythagoras.”

It is little wonder that he incensed Chanel. The New Look was paraded in front of women who, à 5

Under the specialist curatorship of NGV’s fashion and textile experts, two new galleries have been raised on site and filled with over 140 watershed pieces from the brand’s illustrious history. Coupled with video installations of original newsreel footage from the 1940s-1960s under the directorship of Dior and Saint-Laurent, in addition to more recent material from the brand’s forays under Raf Simons and current creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture is an absolute immersion in design history. From piece to piece, delicate leitmotifs assume the power of intergenerational footnotes, forging a narrative of Dior’s (the man’s/the brand’s) distinctive genius. The miniscule knife pleating along the waist of a 1948 cocktail dress is echoed down the hall on the peplums of Galliano’s 2000 showstoppers. Inverted coupeglass-shaped A lines, sleek H lines and sylphlike Tulip lines constantly reappear with small mutations throughout the decades (usually the length of hemlines). The lasting effect, however, is not a mere variation on a theme but a calm elegy to design’s enduring vitality. The exhibition emerges not as a simple survey of one label, but a meditation on the invisible comforts of daily life – the timeless selfpossession of élan.
